Yey. I r teh win.

A worthy successor to the original, but it leaves too many things unanswered.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS
  • Why are the vortigaunts friendly? How/why do they speak English?
  • If the Xen are friendly, why are there still hostile headcraps and zombies everywhere?
  • One huge-ass "WTF!?" to the entire last chapter.
  • WTF is going on?
  • WTF was Breen talking to?
  • WTF was Breen talking about?
  • WTF was Breen doing?
  • The ending effect was a nice touch... but it left me kind of sick. I liked Alyx, then all of a sudden Gman snaps his fingers and bam, suddenly everything's irrelevant and I'm just confused.
  • WTF?
  • Who were "Our Benefactors"? I assume it has something to do with whatever Breen was talking to at the end, but there's no hint of them in the entire chapter named for them.
  • What was with the transhumans? There was a brief announcement regarding them, and you see them briefly toward the end... but nothing was really explained about them, nor did they seem to serve any purpose.

Knowing you, the drivers are already up to date (66.93 / 4.11)...what card you have, again? I know ATI has 4.12 betas available, might be worth a try.

1. It's assumed they were only evil because they were enslaved to the Nihilanth. You'll notice that all the Vortigaunts are lacking the slave collars from the first HL. As for their English skills, I'll attribute that as a plot device and move on.

2. It's always struck me that Headcrabs were more of a feral animal than a sentient being. That would probably explain why they are still "evil." I also noticed that the only reason Kleiner's headcrab was tame was because it was "de-beaked."

3. Seconded on most of the WTFs. I assume Breen was talking to the combine leader. As to what Breen was talking about, which part?

4. My guess is the "Benefactors" might refer to those who may be the G-Man's superiors. We can only speculate.

5. My guess is that the transhumans are humans modified to be docile slaves. Again, only a guess.

Might as well show two screenshots from Half-Life 2 in case someone who hasn't seen any is looking:

That got me for a few minutes. If you are stuck at a point where there's an electrified fence, head back to the road where all the fire is, go around to the gas tank and turn the fire off. As it turns out there's a door behind the fire.
My roommate got stuck there for about 15 minutes, heh!

Actually, I found that pretty quick. I'm stuck at the part right after you get the shotgun and jump into the water tower. I flip the lever to move the crane, but I don't know where to go from there.

OK - this fucking rocks. Sweet sweet streamlined gameplay. Integrated physics engine, wonderful setpieces and that same HalfLife feel.

I'm currently up to Nova Prospect (just breached the facility with my antlion horde). Only place I reeeeaaally had problems with was one of the airboat jumps where for fully half an hour I was doing it and just bouncing off the open face of the tunnel I was meant to land in (this is the section with the 2 combine APCs just before the level with the chopper attack on the lake). So anyhow after half an hour of trying it one way I go and spend 40 minutes gathering materials to make an alternate "onramp" to the tunnel and still get bounced. Then I wander around, blow up a barrel in frustration (which opened up the "right" path into the jump passage" tried the jump again and it worked...

Ah, that got me for a while too, you need to head all the way down to the opposite end of where you entered that little area and from there navigate your way upwards. the crane acts as a bridge that's not entirely obvious until you're up there.

Well I found a local store that ordered some collectors copies and I paid for a hold on one of the 4 remaining unsold copies (make that 3 now). They don’t get in until Monday. Oh well, I was planning on going nuts on Wednesday anyway.

SPOILERS

The ending is one huge unsatisfying blow to the gut. Anticlimatic and explains nothing, really.

I thought I remembered reading that they were going to work on smaller projects for a while, like expansions and such?

Well, those small projects too, but I thought by now everybody knew a HL3 was planned. I think I first read it in a PC Gamer issue.

I think the benefactors are the Combine Overwatch (the main alien force, not those "employed" as the soldiers you see a lot).

The Transhuman Alliance I think simply means the "alliance" between humanity and the aliens of the Combine.
