I'm glad I didn't do a Short Campaign either, I originally had that plan to play as the Greeks.

As it is, I think I'm focused on armies too- I'm up to turn ~85 or so and am only just getting Bombards- which I think is historical considering Gunpowder was only just invented? :)

We should probably get a few more people and agree on starting conditions (how long the game should be, turn-wise, what difficulty, what army sizes, what power).

I just beat a Milanese Army twice my size. How? Sherwood Archers + Yeomen Archers + English Knights + Dismounted English Knights + Armored Swordsmen + Catapults (Bombards hadn't arrived yet).

Only lost ~100 or so men.

It was on a slope- and I had the slope :)

Only problem is there's no nearby castles that can replenish the army- Nottingham is my best castle, after all.

Some of the comments they put in the descriptions really are quality. :D

Well I finished the short campain by killing off England, but continue playing for now. Pushed the Spaniards almost out of Europe to their north african regions and pushed the Danes to their scandinavion regions.

For a short while, all was good. But in the most recent turns, the Mongols arrived and conquered a city, Hungary (one of the most powerfull factions) started attaking me in the east as well) and as icing the cake, the black plague is raging in all my cities now, decimating my population and leaving me bankrupt. We'll see how it ends.

My English empire is getting dangerously low on generals, and the Pope has called for another crusade on one of my conquests in southern france. I captured the last french city last turn, but I'm still at war with Denmark, Poland, Milan, Spain and Portugal, and the Mongols have recently started moving west.

Life is good. :P

Is it a sign I'm getting too involved in this game when I start singing 'Rule Brittania' whenever one of my English fleets has a victory?

Damnit, playing as Egypt and these fucking Mongols are really pissing me off. Every time i've just about wiped them out another 4 or 5 armies appear near Baghdad. I'm on the 3rd wave now! At this rate i'll have the frikkin Temurids fighting them as they come in.

I'm manging them because they tend to head straight towards Antioch (Huge walls and cannon towers, muhahahahaaa!) and just before they get there they split their formation up partially and allow me to take out 1 or 2 of them.

I'm wondering, if i have cannons or ballistas defending in a siege can i stick them on top of the walls?

No, I've tried.

What turn does the black plague hit? I want to be ready for it. God knows how though, I don't want to disband all my veteran units to help pay for it, if it's that devastating.

Oh btw, I fought the forces of the Eastern Roman Empire/ Greeks/ Constantiniple for the first time.

What does my general call them?

Byzantines. Repeatedly.

That's some real historical aptitude there. I cringe whenever I hear it. It's an entirely made up modern term, ffs. No actual general would call em that.

I got a bloody nose, by the way. This army was sitting outside my base and I sallied out and attacked it- and though our forces were equal he had four of their elite Horse Archer units (Vardaito...something). Massacred my longbowmen. It would've gone differently if he didn't have the high ground, or if I had better longbowmen. You know usually they have the high ground and you can sort of come from the side to negate their advantage? Didn't really work on this map.

So I loaded and stayed in my city. He hasn't besieged me yet, thoguh we're at war.

Can't wait to use those uber horse archers myself.

Plus experienced players get the benefit of having new challenges.

So, who's in?
This sounds great. It'd be like the SEIV RP threads. It would also be cool to watch the way different rulers would react to the prejudices and preferences of the last.

"You mean half my army is cavalry? Where are my foot knights?"

I expect my reign will be categorised by strong regional defences, a good relationship with the Pope (unlike seemingly every other gamer in this thread, I've always gotten along well with the Papal States), and a devoted Crusade.

EDIT: My preference for the nation is England or Spain.

Alright, when the fuck did the Papal States become an expansionist superpower? They just besieged Nuremberg with a full stack of units.

It was bad enough that I've been excommunicated for the past hundred years or so (for wars with other Catholic factions that I didn't start), but now I'm going to have to invade Rome.

The pope is a force to be reckoned with. For like 400 gold I was able to pick up 1200 insane religious fanatics on my way to Antioch. Pilgrims are only 2/1 or 1/1, but fanatics... 13/1. I love having huge armies of crazy robbed guys. I would not want to be on the wrong end of a crusade.

Given what happened to the people of Jerusalem during the First Crusade, I'm inclined to agree.

Is it me, or are city walls a tad too weak? They already crumble after 1 or 2 volleys of even a simple bombard unit.

Anyway, started a new game (hard/hard) with England which goes suprisingly well so far. Conquered almost all of the island, a big chunk out of France and all of Flanders in a short amount of time.

I did notice this. Sorta makes you wonder why they bothered adding cannons, if wimpy catapults can toss down a wall section in about a minute.

I also noticed that somethimes units get a bright aura. Does it ahve to do with morale or something?

edit: Hehe. I had a crusader army heading towards on of my cities. Their full stack of everything attacked a small stack of mine (dismounted feudal knights + armored spearmen). I was sooo close in killing their general (he was wounded and only had 2 bodyguards left) before they put my units in retreat. Not that it mattered since the pope died in the next turn, allowing me to elect an allied cardinal and having me reconcilled again.

Hey, so, want to know how you get reconciled when you only have two Cardinals and every Catholic faction with a priest in the College hates you? You murder every single Pope they appoint until they choose your guy. I didn't have assassins with enough skill to do this, I had to trap and kill the Pope on the battlefield every single time. It took a while, and I'm pretty sure my King's going to hell now, but I'm finally not excommunicated anymore. Hurray.

I had to give them back Rome so they'd call a Crusade on Jerusalem for me, but London's much cooler anyway.

Walls collapsing after one or two catapult volleys?

Fuck, I want your catapults. Mine use up almost their entire ammunition supply destroying one wall segment.

That's generally when your unit gets promoted to the next experience bracket in the field.
