Check out this screenshot. About fifteen Combine soldiers piled out of that building onto the barricade... look at all those bullet holes me and my squad buddies made.

Which car is it? Your buggy? If so, remember Newtons law. Every action has an equal and opposing reaction. The HL2 physics engine is briliant and you have to think like Newton a lot of the time. Apply force in the right direction at the right place and presto!

How the fuck do I get past the bit in the lake, after you finally shoot down one of those hunter choppers with your upgraded airboat? I can't figure out what the hell to do.

Zap it with the gravity gun a couple times.

I'm coming up on that part again going through the game on Hard (Water Hazard can be damn hard on, well, Hard ). As I recall one has to get out, climb a tower to open a gate, proceed through on foot and fight through a dozen or so CP and work your way over to the drain thingies in the dam. You can then open up the left-most one and drive off a ramp through the hole and out the other side.

Just finished and the only bad thing about the game (not including Steam) is the lack of plot exposition. There's a whole fuckton of questions left unanswered and waaaay too many gaps

Agreed. I know that's a staple of Half-Life gameplay, but I find it fucking obnoxious. GIVE ME BACKSTORY, BITCHES! :)

Maybe its because you're simply a pawn in the G-Man's game and you don't need to know?

Just like Freeman we know jack shit about what's happened, what's going on, what the consequences of our actions are and, i imagine, are a litlle annoyed.

There was a cutscene that apparently never showed up in the game, but was written out and everything, in which Eli runs Gordon through what happened since he was gone.

Basically, Black Mesa was only the beginning. Xen wildlife began popping up everywhere, and people were forced to move into cities for protection. Then one day, the centers of all the main cities disspeared, and a Citidel appeared in each. The Combine poured out, and Earth's military was defeated in "The Seven Hour War". Breen was the negotiator on the human side, which is why he's in charge.

It was posted on HL2.net I think.

Now I need to figure out how to access the HL2 models in the SDK modelviewer.

Anyone have any suggestions? the exact moment is after the admin's office, first flash.

Whats the console command for changing DX levels? I should try it on a DX8.1 renderer.

EDIT: I'm thinking sound.

Bah, stuck.

I'm on the bridge in Highway 17, near the far end. I've got to a control room where I deactivated a force field with the gravity gun. I then flipped a switch, and a chopper showed up. Where do I go?

Head back along the underside of the bridge, (assuming you're where I think you are) and get back to the buggy. Once there, drive along the little road along the cliff to get to the train tracks, and voila; you're in business.

Ta, I'd thought that was the end of the buggy bit.

I liked the train bit though, as expected as it was.

ME: Hmm, hope a train doesn't come or I'll be fucked.

Yes, it makes perfect sense that Freeman's confused. That doesn't mean that's a good thing. Smashes suspension of disbelief for me that this guy woke up on a train and just wandered around killing people who shoot at him and moving in an inexorable path for no apparent reason. Half-Life had some established backstory, established in-game, but established. HL2 gives you no clue why you're motivated for something.

Well, considering what you hear on Breen's reports, and by looking around the city, not to mention the general attitudes of those who were your colleages and friends from Black Mesa... and that the Combine shoot at you.

If you think the motivation isn't there, then you weren't paying attention. :P

I think HL2 gives you plenty of info about the story. Bits and pieces from Breen's speeches, here and there. If you had any sympathy for the fellow human being, you would too fight the Combine on the side of the Resistance.

The only question left remaining would be how does the result of this all fit in the G-man's and his employer's plans and motives? Which will be answered in a future installment of Half-Life, most likely.

Did anyone else get the distinct impression that the resistance included... well, everyone besides the combine soldiers?

I love how the underground railroad is through a bunch of open-top canals with easy overwatch positions against an enemy who likes flying recon drones and helicopter gunships. Reeaaal stealthy, guys. As for motivation, I'm mainly talking about 'why the hell get off the train into a totally unknown place.' Were I in Gordon's place, I'd be more concerned with finding the G-Man and lynching him. Twice.
