Deep in the research labs of a UPK military contractor, a brilliant young scientist pressed the button to start the test firing of a gigantic laser. The UPK Navy had used heavy particle beams to account for most of the firepower on big cap ships, not because they were better than lasers, but because they simply could not figure out how to scale lasers up without frying their power grids. This results of this test could change all that. The invisible beam melted through the first layer of military grade ceramics and polymers. All systems still in the green. The second and third layers gave way. The researcher and the executives standing behind him watched with anticipation as some of the readouts dropped into the yellow. But as the sample hull was breached, the systems still held strong. Everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief. This was going to make them all very rich.

Horizons corporation finally had their replacement for the particle beams. The simple laser was possibly the ultimate energy weapon. Lightspeed propogation, no recoil effects, and inerrant accuracy made it preferable to a particle beam. A few more pieces of technology and they would have a full range of new ships and upgrade programs to submit to the navy.

Sales of the new electromagnetic weapons upgrade have made me millions: I just signed the papers, we are shipping units to the Soirhyetz, the Asgard, the Outworlds Alliance, and the Pirate Kingdoms! The new folks, the Unity, we are still negotiating with- we are not sure the tech is compatible with their weapons myet.

The weapons-works are going to be doubled in size. Freewoman Jillian D'Montague is taking over the works, for I have decided to emigrate to the Durandel system, and retire in ease.

Earlier this week, in an unexpected move, representatives of the Asgard and United Republican governments traded apologies for the last few months of warfare and hostility. -See attached text-

Outworlds Alliance approved Cohabitation Treaty with the United Floater Republics!

In an unexpected move today, Council officials proposed a cohabitation treaty to the Outworlds Alliance. The treaty was rapidly accepted.
Public approval for the Outworlds Alliance jumped to a full 97% approval. The first colonists, Comet miners from Zarathrustra and Kharam, will be arriving in OA territory shortly, along with a small force of URN strike cruisers, escorting a diplomatic team and a military liason officer.

New government arrives in Known Space

This late breaking story comes to you just now, sorry, we have no polls on the issue, as it is brand new!

A new power, inhabiting the Orion Cluster, called the Talian Unity, has arrived in Known Space.

Business deals are already being contracted between Floater and Talain concerns, with the Zarathrustran Armorworks selling some new weapons technology to the Talians.

The Council is sending a diplomatic team to Talapus Prime immediatly.

"Sir, I think they are faking it" was the blunt statement of General Fedayn, chief in command of Monacoran Inteligence. Continuing he said "The powers that they are supposedly outputting could be faked by one of our destroyers if we really wanted to. Also the fleet totals they put out are completley unrealistic if they only have six highly developed systems, not to mention planets as they claim. However there is good news, if they did put so much time into making their fleets so big and powerful they can't possibly have a serious army, not to mention one that could stand up to us. My advice is that either way we try to make friends and ally ourselves with them. However in the worst case scenario, if they turn belligerent, after we find their planet co-ordinates we could scrammble regiments and try to wipe them out before they can wipe us out, or find Far Point."

"Why didn't we know of their existence?" asked a marine general.

"We knew that they existed, we didn't know who they were, or where they came from. It's like being in the field and knowing that someone is out there, but not knowing who. We are relativley certain that there are two other unkown nations out there, we can even make a good guess where one of them is. We also know that these nations have, or had, agents in our teritory, that's how we got most of the information on these races. The Unity had at least ten agents in civillian roles, and we have found no infiltraters in the military."

"What do we know about them that is certainly true?" Asked an army general.

"Two things, they are reptiles, and they call themselves the unity, everything else is up to guess work."

The prince looked around, he had already recieved a very detailed brief on the matter, and was hungry right now. Lunch was coming soon, but not soon enough. Shrugging he went back to feigning attention, and waiting for the lunch tone.
