The empeor sat in a meeting with his strategic advisor

"are the readings on the Tailian vessels true?"

"Qute frankly emperor, i think their full of shit"

"are you certian?"

"the fleet numbers they provided for us cannon be achived with merely six worlds, the Krytos empire has had ten worlds under its control for some time now and is currently developing eight more yet we could not hope to support a military that large or powerful"

"so they are lying, I thought as much. The only question is, why?"

"we belive that their military is not only weaker then they claim but also below the galactic standard so they want to scare off other powers."

"discretly contact all our allies the floaters, the Outworlds alliance, Durandels empire, the NRE all of them find out what information they have and tell them what we know"
And this is why you don't watch anything produced by Ronald D. Moore after he had his brain surgically removed and replaced with a bag of elephant semen.-Gramzamber, on why Caprica sucks

Command and Control
Military Cluster Hadriel, Second Fleet
System X-23 (Uninhabited, near border of the former Kokand Empire)

-DRONE HRC-251 REPORTS::
:: FTL SIGNATURE ::
:: SEVENTEEN CONTACTS +- 5 ::
:: POSSIBLE MATCHES: TARGET FLEET ::
:: BLACK FOREST ::

"This message came today from one of our recon drones, gentlemen. We have evidence that our prey came through this area recently. They appear to be travelling in a larger group than we originally expected- fortunatly, with Commodore Jerinhald, Durandel's Empire, covering us, we have more than enough firepower to put an end to our opponents."

"We are close to catching them, gentlemen. I want all vessels double checked, and all crews good to go at a moment's notice."

"These bastards will pay. The last time the Kokanders went up against a Floater fleet, they payed heavily. This time around, they will pay the ultimate price. They will meet justice."

"Keep on your toes, gentlemen. May the Peace of the Void be with you."

"Ladies and gentlemen of the ITA. Now that we've been able to reach a level of relative peace and order it is time that we tie up our lose ends. I wish to reopen talks regarding the stabiliy of the UPK. It was proposed that the UPK should have their founding member veto revoked due to instabilities within the UPK government. What I would like to know is if this is still an issue and does anyone have anything to discuss on the matter or should we consider it closed for now?"

Supply Convoy en route to NRE exchange point - current cargo approx 32% of NRE total food consumption

"This is WagonTrain12-93! We are under attack by unknown vessels! They're tearing us to shreds! We don't have a chance - Oh god - there goes another one! The convoy is down to less than 15% of original capacity! We are completely outgunned! Mayday! Mayday! Any ships! Any ships we require IMMEDIATE assistance! I repeat we -" Silence then filled the channel...

Above NRE world Imperator

From nowhere the vessels appeared, rippling into reality with a shimmer, their black hulls seeming to absorb all light and sinking them into the background. They completely surrounded the planet, there had to be atleast a hundred of them... As one they salvoed their missiles then rippled away again. They had been present in reality for under 3 seconds. The planetary defenses did their job well, generally only a single missile out of the ten launched from each vessel made it to the surface. But even then it was overkill. Each missile carried a warhead capable of decimating any electrical device within a thousand kilometre radius. Within moments every electrical system on Imperator was reduced to molten slag as its wiring melted, boards cracked and fuses exploded.

Onboard the Archangel [note - THIS IS WELL AND FUCKING TRULY OUT OF CHARACTER KNOWLEDGE]

The Jihad's leaders stood around the table looking at the results of the missions. "You know there is an old saying, that the only thing keeping humanity from anarchy is electricity and three square meals a day?"

Out of character knowledge:

The ships that attacked Imperator are unknown - you hear me? Completely fucking unknown, their designs, weapons and drive systems do not match any known profile. These are the true Jihad vessels, not the ConglomoCorp escorts and freighters that have been butt-monkeying around collecting intel... And remember this is OOC knowledge, so don't play the munchkin and use it against me.

News of the attack quickly filtered back through to the nearby regions.

"What the hell's going on?"
"Imperator's been hit! So has an NRE foodstuffs convoy!"
"NRE command, come in, what the hell is going on down there!?"
"I'm not picking up any responce from Imperator sir, all communication lines are dead."
"Open a channel with Rome, try and find out what the hell's going on!"

[ITA-Council Chambers]

"Ladies and gentlemen. About two hours ago Imperator, a major NRE trading hub came under attack from an unknown power. The proximity of this attack to ITA trade lanes represents a significant danger to ITA traders, as such I am forced to declare a state of emergency until the perpetrators of this violent act are found and brought to justice.

Monacoran Empire, as the NRE's closest ally I request that your people lead the investigation and if possible arrange for aid convoys to Imperator. We need to know the extent of the damage.

Minister of Security, Fenari Representative, you are to mobilize whatever ITASF forces you can gather to aid in defense against future attacks and to investigate the origins of this assault.

Minister of Fleet Assets, Asgard Representative, I am ordering a 10% funding increase for the purchase and construction of ITASF assets.

United Floater Republics Representative, I'm granting you temporary reponsibility to help me maintain the trade lanes until this crisis is over.

UPK, it appears as though the stability issue will have to wait. I am going to suspend the issue for the time being.

As for the Minmatar, I have received word that the fleet is being prepared for immediate mobilization once the threat is identified. This will be our first combat engagement in quite some time.

This is Neltar Nethrickt. I am here in the DE R&D department of medical research, where earlier today, using an earh amphibian known as an Axolotl, DE scientists have isolated the genes reponsible for nerve, and limb regeneration.

This is head researcher Zamfir Krildeth

"This is a very exiting find. Once we figue out how to apply this in humanoids, we will be able to make paralyisis a thing of the past, and make prosthetic limbs obsolete. This is probably the most important medical find in this decade."

There you have it. This promises to be very useful. More as the story develops.

ATTN: NRE, ITA
FROM: UFR Office of Diplomacy and War
SUBJ: General Mobilization

All Floater fleets are coming to full alert status. We have three Mohaimese Military Clusters, with attached task forces, ready to jump into the Imperator system, and if our Roman allies would like, we can be there in mere hours.

All Troop Transports and OAVs of the First Fleet are being loaded with relief supplies, and can be on-scene in two days.

If it pleases the Romans, we can arrange to start towing comets in from your Oort cloud, and set up food factories, making basic CHON rations, and as much water as you need.

We pray for our allies in these terrible times, and we will do what is necessary to assist our Roman brothers in repairing and healing their world.

Our Kharamite forces are being dispersed to assist in maintaining the trade lanes around Imperator. We have over 40 Strike Cruisers to assign to the task of policing and protecting relief supplies.

Likewise. The PSR wonders if this attack is related to the terrorist campaign of the Rogue Kokand fleet.

Notice from the Unity Contact office:
As you may have noticed, our initial data report was filled with exagerrations and lies. This was no mistake. It is standard Contact office policy to send out such reports to gauge the reactions of the various recipients. We apologize for this, but it is necessary.

What the hell could have been the motive behind this attack?
Let's examine the facts:

1: Imperator is a non military target, it is unlikely that this was a strike against the NRE state, such an attack would have more then likely happened on Earth. The losers in this attack would be the NRE's closest trading partners; Minmatar, DE, OU, the Mensa Dorian Hegemony and of course the NRE themselves through loss of trade.

2: These ships have never been encountered before, obviously they have had no prior involvement in galactic affairs until now. The question is, how would they have known what effect attacking Imperator would have?

3: These attackers also had to know exactly how much force would be required to overcome Imperator's defenses. They would have known that Octavia is one of the most war torn systems in the sector, still recovering from the emancipation wars.

All things considered I can think of two immediate possibilities.

1: That we've all been under surveilance for some time.
I find this one the least likely possibility due to the stepped up security we've had lately, including the stepped up ITASF patrols, not to mention local sensor nets and local military patrols.

2: They are working with someone else, perhaps someone with a grudge against the NRE or their allies, perhaps someone trying to destabilize the ITA, it may have even been a diversionary tactic.

The only way to know for certain is to continue the investigation. The first question is who would have had anything to gain from the attack?

These attacks may be linked to the theft of several Unity data-tapes that contained our intelligence data on Imperator. While the information was nothing than a tally of all ships currently present in the system, the thief went about covering up evidence as if he had stolen an extremely sensitive military document. He may have simply stolen the wrong tape, but due to his skill, we highly doubt that. We shall continue our investigation to determine if the data-tapes ever left our space, since most Contact Branch data has a long range tracer in case of such thefts. But the only person who could have stolen one is a Talian working for an outside organization, since no outsiders aside from a few diplomat's have every been on Talapus. We will trasmit our update in 2 days.

We have recieved a postive signal from the data tape. It left our space just a few days before the attacks commenced. On the day the data-tape left our space, one of our frigates reported seeing a Talian ship hurriedly fleeing towards Imperator. But, the signal was cut just minutes after the ship left our territory, so we can only go on the vector data.

Exactly what did you mean by wrong tape? It is concerning that you have been collected ship counts in NRE systems, but this statement indicates that you have been collecting information on the systems of our trading partners (and quite likely our own) that is potentially even more sensitive. Perhaps you would like to explain how and why you have been collecting this information? And Perhaps you'd also like to explain how an espionage operation could have been carried out on a nation that up until two days ago no one knew existed?

The Unity, when it was established, was a very paranoid entity. Former leaders were always concerned whether an alien species was going to attack, so they launched the Contact branch, which is intended to provide advance warning of any threat against the Unity. None of this information may be used to harm others, as it violates all the rules of Har'zhack.
We do not probe the inner workings of goverments, we merely watch the outside. We have very little sensitive data on any alien goverments, and the data-tape in question was classified as low-security, because it contained very little information, only a listing of ship classes and numbers present in the Imperator system from 5 month ago, which became useless a few days after it was recorded.
And as for the esipionage operation, it is entirely possible one of our own citizens was captured by some terroist group and interrogated, or a small rebel group met up with this terroist orginization. Several such rebels exist in our most remote colonies, but even there they would have had access to Contact security systems if they had the right codes and ID, which is impossible, since they would need top level clearance that only the Contact director has to acess even low level security systems for the data. Besides, the data-tape can only be read from a Unity computer system, and the data is automatically purged if it loses the Talapus beacon signal. In all cases, they captured an out of date and useless piece of information that was erased when they left the Falagon system anyway. They did not acess the tapes while in the Falagon system, otherwise an alert would signal it if they did, and once they left the Falagon system the tapes would be totally empty. There is no way they could have garnered any useful information from the tapes even if the data still existed![/b]
