100,000 men isn't teeny for that Era. The largest powers in the world won't have a standing army of more than 200,000, and they're too far from you to invade easily.
My country is extremely zealous about defense, and since they don't have the man power they try to make up for it with the best weapons, the best fortifications, and the biggest and most guns.
Perhaps, but artillery is very, very, expensive in that era. Your country is too small to support that expenditure by internal resources, and with it's small navy, certainly doesn't have the colonial or trading might to bring in that much money.

I'm unfamiliar with early 18th century artillery... but I'm sure that 1 gun for 20 men is too many. 1:50, as in your case, sounds more accurate. Sea Skimmer would know.Dahak wrote:Just a question: what would you consider reasonable, for a nation leaning heavily on artillery, such as mine?
EDIT:
I still think you have too large a population. France in 1725, a nation of about your size and agricultural output, had around 20-25 million citizens. If anything, your population should be lower than mine (My territory is about twice your size and has solid agriculture). If you have 35 million citizens then I'll have to go up, too.

Yeah, said I'd make mistakes.
What amount of Merchant ships would be good for a major marketting country. The main focus of my country is trade so as to boost itself and make itself as big as possible, I'm thinking that it's economy is good enough to supply a nation 3 times it's size with an adaquate number of weapons within two years. My country also uses a lot of ground convoys for transportation of goods as well.
I'll knock my army down to 70,000 and my guns down to 3 per 100, is that more reasonable?

Land transport is inefficient, as we have no railroads. Alyriums nation is naval focussed, so Sea Skimmer said 10,000 merchant vessels. My nation is big, has a lot of coastline, and ships a lot of goods, so I have 8,000. Something below that would make sense.
I suppose... look, you shouldn't rely too much on what I'm saying, as I've got a big gap in my military knowledge from about 1500 to 1900 SS will make the final decision.I'll knock my army down to 70,000 and my guns down to 3 per 100, is that more reasonable?

Following information SUSPECT until I get a look-see at
the map Skimmer made...
Wurtemburg:
8 Million Population
30,000 man volunteer army and 400 guns.
No real fleet as I am landlocked, but I have about
30 or so small riverine gunboats for plying canals and
inland rivers.
Major Cities:
Ulm (Capital)
Stuttgart
Freiburg
Baden-Baden

Got it, no large land convoys, just little ones to nearby nations.
So I'll probably go with 6,000 merchant ships. My military knowledge of this time period is also non-existant.

The map's already been made and you're not exactly small, though it has been through some revisions since I saw it last. To give an idea for size in what I've seen...BTW, I'll take a small landlocked nation called "Würtemburg" with about 40,000 men under arms and a hundred artillery pieces or so.
Dahak's HRE is about the size of France. You're maybe 2/3 his size, and you have a lot of coastline. Sea Skimmer is still changing things about as far as I know. I'm the biggest boy on the map, but I'm very spread out.

The Map
That's hosted on the mostly inflexible (no remote linking, for example) Care2 photoalbum I have. It's still in development, however, so complaining to SS ought to have some result. You could be shoved into a corner closer to Dahak while he and Sea Skimmer gained some land at your expense. Justifier might also be expanded into that NPC area.
He basically tore Europe open to aid sea power.
This is the first version of the map, IIRC.

Hmmm, looks good to me, I'm not close to Alyrium like I'd wanted, but oh well. no real biggie. I've got more access to the sea then I thought I would, so I'll up my navy a bit. And I apparently have Access to one of the two easy routes through the mountains seperating Stravo and I from the rest of the nations (With Stravo having the other.)
Minor revisions to my country will be made.

People are going for far too large a fleet. At this time 100-125 ships of the line is a huge fleet, if you want a large army you should only have a few dozen SOL, third rate and up.
Alyrium you cannot have 260 ships of the line period, divided that figure in half and cut your army down to more like 75,000 and that might be acceptable. What the fuck is it with you and power gaming forces?
As for how much field artillery you should have. Figure one gun for every five hundred men maximum.
