As the meeting concluded, Adar Krell rose to say one final word. "There is much talk of expense in the search for these mechanical fiends. Of course, we shall not contribute to the funds for this project. It is the nature of the Combine to sell, not to give. Should you wish some help from us in searching, please contact the governments of the Client Worlds.

"That being said, do not believe that we will be left out of this hunt. Every ship in the Krell armada has been contracted out to help find these mechanics. We are also fully utilizing our intelligence net for word of any contact with the hostile ships prior to the attack. I anticipate that the goal of the Combine will not be to find, but rather to destroy. It will be our ships that "glass" the world we find the machines on, and it is a duty that I look forward to. Of course, any help from other powers will be appreciated. Thank you."

Sol system, Andorra

Admiral Tjoerhom listened and watched intensely, and discussed the topics raised with both her staff and home via Datanet.
But finally, she spoke.
"My dear colleagues, you have brought forth several interesting points. As for this sidewall idea, the Grand Empire will have a eeper look at it, but as our ships already are equipped with efficient gravitic shielding, I'm led to believe that fitting our ships with a totally unknown technology doing exactly the same job is counter productive. Secondly, the Grand Empire already has many drones at its disposal, which we would offer to help. And thirdly, we will assist in any way possible with the fleet currently in orbit around Earth."
She leaned back, and waited.

Empress Elana stood up and walked over to Ambassador Munei.
"I am pleased you accept this alliance. We need to set up a document as soon as possible. Are you...authorized to do that, or do you need someone from back home to do it?"

The emperor walked in and turned to his monacoarn host

"Sorry about that."

"The empire will assist in the construction of probes. It will be difficult to fit fast enough hyperdrives on them though, and it would be very difficult to mix our probes with a foreign drive system."

"Oh, and as of six AM this morning, the KSE is officially on a war footing. Warship construction has been increased 200%, and all ships are being fast tracked. I have a feeling we're going to need them."

Gabriel Cluster
Jormungandr System

No structure like it had been seen before in Known Space. It was an immense asteroid, hollowed out, honeycombed with passages, outfitted with light, power, heat, and atmosphere- a pocket of brilliant, organic existence in space's cold emptyness. It had been spun up, rotating along it's access, during it's construction. Small thrusters, periodically fueled with hydrogen by the tugs making the runs out to the Oort cloud and back, maintained the carefully slated .8 gs.

The Speaker was taking a tour of such structures as these, constructed as one of the earliest parts of a viable Cluster. She walked unsteadily in the earth-standard gravity, surveying chamber after chamber of pregnant mothers and newborn children.

The engineers who had remade the Floater genemodding package almost a century ago had commited a veritable act of god- an extensive rewriting of the human code, plunging evolution forewards a million years. They had granted gifts which made Ouster society what it was- strength, resilience, ceativity, and the curse (or boon) of short life. The masters of the geneome had faced one problem- the reproductive systems, hardened as they were against cosmic radiation and transformed to pass a viable child in only a couple of months, still needed gravity to properly bear a child. The spinning, artificial nursery clusters were the result- hives of life, where young women bore their children to term under the protection of the community. Babies, freshly birthed, lay in rows of cribs, awaiting feeding. Soon, they would be brought out to the main Cluster, where they would be reared and cared for by the Cluster's civilians. There was a reason each Ouster took their Cluster's name as their own- each one was raised by the community. Ousters had no family as the Bound knew it. Rather, they were an integral part of society, their loyalties lying with the cluster that had raised them.

The Speaker smiled. This was the first generation born in Known Space- they were all children of the Hajr, born not of the Diaspora's mounting flood, but rather of soldiers home on shore leave. In only six or seven years, these young ones would be taking up arms as the Hajr's troops, or spreading the Diaspora, constructing Clusters and mining comets. Recruitment back in Elysium was on the rise, with news of the Hajr's success, but those born in Known Space were the Hajr's true future. A dozen other clusters had been built, each one with a structure like this one, and the nomadic mining Clusters now flooding in from Elysium would have their own nursery ships. In only a few decade's time, the Jormungandr Sphere and the Hudson Sector would be packed with teeming Ouster life.

Echo
One Week Later

The sun shone hot on the sands of Echo, one of the secondary Client Worlds of the Combine, and home of Emir al-Shad. After the military conference on Earth, the three surviving Combine leaders had boarded a transport back to Combine Space, heading for Echo to attend the funeral of their old friend.

Faran and Adar stood by in silence next to Trilla, still in a wheelchair. According to the tradition of Echo, they were not dressed in black, but rather a bright blue. An honor guard stood around the casket, all members of the Echo militia, come to recognize the death of their most honored citizen. Everything had been said, tradition maintained. The honor guard turned and fired off 3 shots into the air from their rifles, and the casket was slowly lowered into the ground. Supports were knocked free, and the sand quickly filled the hole where Emir's body had been delivered.

Faran and Trilla turned and walked back towards the church, high on the rocks above. Adar stood for a long while, holding vigil over the resting place of his oldest and dearest friend. Finally, he pulled out Emir's old silver cane, and, laying it to rest over the grave of the former Combine military officer, turned and headed back to rejoin the others.

Monacoran Space
Earth
Andorra

With the return of Admiral Stone, the fifth fleet settled to wait in their current position until the chosen plan began to take effect. The information was relayed via secure communications back to command, and within an hour of the message having been received, the plans for the modifications required for the drones to be effective were already been determined. And thus the fleet waited, while the engineers back home figured out the best way for the Empire to proceed.

Admiral Stone and the officers of various naval vessels concerned themselves with going over the recorded data of the battle for Earth, information that had been acquired by the Veithan Heavy Destroyer which had deployed its drones as the battle took place.

Veithan Space
Veitha System

The Veitha system was the heart of the Empire, the location where the Empire had begun. It was not surprising then that it was the most heavily defended of all the systems in the possession of the Empire. Its space would normally be littered with hundreds of civilian drive signatures as cargo ships, liners and a host of other vessels moved about the system proper. This had changed since the razing of Earth, and now a good fraction of the traffic usually present in the system had been channeled to neighboring star systems. Nonetheless, the system was far from empty as the three hundred and eighty seven active civilian drives proclaimed. Furthermore, over one hundred and twenty military drives mingled with the civilians marking the first fleet as it patrolled the system.

The approach of the Ravenlock ship had not gone unnoticed. The core systems of the Empire had spared no expense in their defense and were all protected by an impressive and expansive early warning network. Hyperspace or subspace anomalies noted light minutes away from the system itself. The incoming signature caused a stir for seven and half seconds, the time needed to confirm that its approach vector was that one given to the Ravenlock consortium. The first fleet was informed, vessels angled to meet the incoming signature. When the vessel arrived at the edge of the system without escorts, only two vessels continued on their approach while the rest hung back. A channel opened between the Ravenlock vessel and Veitha System Control.

“Welcome to the Veitha system Ravenlock representatives. This is Veitha System control, the VNS Dominion and the VNS Glorious will be your escorts.”

Each of the vessels tasked with escort duty was a battleship measuring three thousand meters in length. The ships moved gracefully for their size, Veithan technology utilizing inertia-dampening fields that allowed surprising maneuverability for a vessel of their size. After each of the vessels had taken its position to the port and starboard sides of the Ravenlock vessel the visitors were allowed to proceed further in system; The Ravenlock sensors would be able to detect a wealth of information if they cared to look. There were few communication signals being sent for a system with the amount of traffic that Veitha was currently experiencing, a side effect of the psychic technology which the Empire employed. There were no asteroid belts in the system proper; any such resources had been consumed long ago. The LaGrange points in the system were almost without exception all dominated by orbital constructs, from military outposts to factories.

Three of the planets in the system were radiating enough emissions to suggest considerable populations and industry. Veitha III was not the most heavily populated or industrialized planet in the system, that distinction went to Veitha IV. The local gas giant was heavily exploited by orbital facilities and factories. It also possessed a significant orbital presence, including no less than ten eighteen kilometer wide stations. Four civilian ships attempted to approach the formation before a naval destroyer opened up a channel and convinced the ships to back off. The Ravenlock ship was given an orbital position over Veitha III itself, and as they approached the capital of the empire its protection was obvious. Two massive orbital constructs termed “space forts” by the Empire hovered in orbit, each with more firepower than a Veithan dreadnought and considerably more durable. There were ten separate orbital weapons platforms, their positions chosen to offer the most fire to incoming fleets. There were constellations of defense satellites hovering over the planet itself, which combined with the ground side firepower turned the world into a virtual fortress. Nonetheless, Earth itself had been considered a fortress world and its defenses had been breached. The Veithan government was under no delusion that Veitha III was unassailable. Nonetheless, combined with the presence of the first fleet and the fact that the second fleet could arrive to Veitha within thirty minutes of an attack, Veitha III was a poor place to choose to attack.

”Ravenlock vessel this is Veitha III control, a landing zone has been prepared for you. The coordinates are as follow, please utilize the given vector.”

As the Ravenlock shuttle was freed from its mother vessel and accelerated down towards the surface of the planet, it was granted a remarkable view of the planet below. Veitha III was dominated by its large and elaborate cities, but there were still patches of land that were dominated by forests and open spaces. The rivers and oceans of the world below as inviting as those of a garden world. The natural resources of the capital world had not been fully exploited, as the people had early on decided that their capital’s natural beauty should be preserved as much as possible. The end result was a balanced mixture of modern architecture and high technology with remnants of the world as it had been before it had been colonized.

As the shuttle approached the Veithan capital, the city rose to meet them. The landing vector took them past the edges of the city proper and deposited them in a government facility. If the Ravenlock delegates had been paying attention to the streets, they would have realized that their fears about the press were a reality. It had proven most difficult to keep the Ravenlock visit a secret, and although the Veithan government was doing everything it could to keep the press at bay, like cockroaches they had managed to divine the chosen location for the delegation’s planet side arrival.

When the shuttle landed, the Ravenlock delegation was met by a dozen Veithan guards wearing light power armor. A well dressed male representative waited for them to exit their shuttle before greeting them. “Welcome to Veitha III. I am Malar Trea, I will lead you to your meeting.” He nodded, waited for the Ravenlock to introduce themselves before leading them within the complex. Exactly five minutes after they had been moved inside, a convoy of vehicles left the compound moving towards the center of the capital. Various news organizations followed the convoy, recording devices primed for when the Ravenlock delegates would exit their vehicles. In truth, the convoy was all smoke and mirrors. The Ravenlock delegates led through and underground hover railway which linked various government compounds.

It took fifteen minutes for them to arrive at the chosen compound, and then another fifteen minutes to arrive at their final destination. All the while, Mr. Trea answered any questions that the Ravenlock had that were proper for him to answer. Before the delegation was allowed to meet with the Veithan government, they were politely scanned with state of the art equipment. The probability that the Ravenlock delegates planned harm to their Veithan counterparts was miniscule, but procedures had to be followed. As long as nothing deemed offensive was found by their sensors, they were led down a marble hall and through a door at the end.

The room was dominated by a large circular table, no less than a dozen armored guards at the sides of the room. The head of the table opposite the Ravenlock delegation was dominated by a middle-aged man that was flanked by four Veithans wearing white clothes. Each was a prime, tasked with making sure that nothing untoward occurred to the president of the Empire. At his right rested a man dressed in a military uniform, the first admiral of the Empire and commanding officer of the Veithan Navy. Directly opposite the first admiral rested the new secretary of state, a man with blue eyes and a kind face. It was to the right of the admiral that the Veithan director of intelligence sat. His eyes watching the director quite calmly, even if there seemed to be very obvious similarities between both men. Opposite the director of intelligence sat the secretary of defense, a woman with neatly trimmed hair and passive demeanor.

It was the president that spoke first. “On behalf of the Veithan Empire I welcome you. I am president Edja`lis Duvol and these are all members of my inner cabinet. I hope that your trip here was pleasant and your arrival welcoming. I think I speak for everyone here when I say that we have been pleased by our initial meeting and hope that the relationship between our nations only improves. Now, please be seated. I am certain we have a great deal to discuss”

Grand Empire Space
Gladsheim Prime

The Empress stood and did not walk so much as glide towards him. His mind was aware that Empress taught of him well, the fact that he was allowed to see her directly supported that fact. Still, he was still not perfectly comfortable with exchanging words with the leader of the Grand Empire. Nonetheless, he did not allow his internal thoughts and considerations to be shown outwardly. His eyes watching those of the Empress as she approached and finally spoke once more. There was no hesitation in offering an answer.

“I agree, establishing a physical document should take place at the earliest possible convenience.” He paused for a moment, a soft smile appearing on his lips at her final words. “I am authorized to do this, although it will take a bit of time to work out the proper language with one of your people.” The language had to be just right, allowing both nations equal say in their alliance as well as establishing what the guidelines would be. He was certain that the Grand Empire did not wish to form an alliance that was open ended. He considered this for a moment before speaking once more.

”As long as we can talk about what we both expect for this alliance, we should be able to have a rough draft worked out by today. After that it will all depend on what changes your people and my own will wish.” If they were lucky, the document could be finished in less than forty eight hours. And then, all that remained was for it to be signed by both nations. The thought was pleasing, for in his time in the Imperial Plaza as brief as it was…he was quickly becoming fond of the people of the Grand Empire.

"Wonderful, ambassador," the Empress said. "I'll have an assistant sent to your quarters, so you can work out the exact details with your staff. In the meantime, care to join me for lunch?" She motioned to an adjacent room. "We can take a look at the draft later on, what do you think?"

At the same time, hundreds of pre-produced drones awoke, and were programmed with the Data provided by the Monacoran authorities. The Grand Empire always keeps a stock of drones, in the case of urgent scanning missions.
Once they've received their data, they sped out, swallowing away into their wormholes, looking for the robotics responsible for the destruction of Earth.

Sol system, Andorra

"I wish to inform you that the Grand Empire just launched a batch of our drones to scan for the responsibles of this mayhem," Admiral Tjoerhom told the other military representatives.

The holographic R'hlloran spoke through the drone's external speaker in a croaking tone. "We are willing to trade some of our naquida circuitry in turn for this reactive armor you speak of, Atlantean. And we are open to any other trades you wish to commence."

(Consequences, this is for you)

Deep Space

Admiral Santiago watchedthe status of the final relay drone as it sped away from the Battle Ship. He leaned back as best he could in his command chair, behind him were the ambassadorial advisors from the Diplomatic Corps, and around and in front of him the command crew of his ship were operating at their posts. The ship was old, back from the days before Monacoran Shipyards had ready access to artificial gravity, the Bridge was built in the center of the ship, around it four sections rotated, no longer necessary for gravity but done nonetheless. The side effect of this had been that, and it remained this way now, the bridge lacked any sort of gravity. It was but one more downside of the Monacoran way.

"Sensor data?"

"Coming sir. It's a very Large ship, bigger then almost everything. A lot heavier armed too, shielding is very heavy, there are organics on board it seems. There are fighters too, not of a known class of ship, more sensors are needed to learn more."

"Good, prepare to broadcast through the probe chain, and start sending standard code packet."

Two minutes later Santiago's message was broadcast around to the new-comer's ship.

"I am Admiral Santiago of the Monacoran Astral Navy. I bring greetings from our government, and from our people. We would like to meet peacefully, could you change course to one attached in this message packet so that we could meet in person? We anxiously await your reply."

"Auditor, we are receiving a transmission. they are asking us to alter course to one of their specification. Confidence is high that the source is organic, if not human, any machine intelligence would have to be fiendishly clever and well-versed in human behavior to mimick it that thoroughly."

"By all means Captain, comply. We are here to make allies, not start a war. And if they are hostile and can casually take out this ship, its not like we would stand much of a chance anyway. Record the following for transmission toward whatever sent this: 'This is Imperial Auditor Genko, speaking as Emperor's voice for the Shi Combine. We've been out of contact with everyone for a hell of a long time, and seek to establish peaceful relations. We've also had some trouble lately with some form of automated threat, and wish to know how widespread it is. We apologise for the lack of warning, but having been isolated for so long, we were not sure how far this thread has spread. We are complying with your request, and eagerly anticipate a meeting." She signaled the recording to stop, played it back once, and oredered "Send it."

The Replicator Swarms were now shifting their operations.

Not all had made it this far. Three fourths of the four hundred worlds seeded had failed to bear fruit, as it were. System failures, radiation damage, landing damage, discovery by organics, or any of a million other variables had worked against the Overseer at the edge of known space. With each day that had dragged by, the Replicators had doubled their numbers.

After two weeks, ten thousand of the thousand-kilogram machines were swarming on each of their captured rocks. Now it was time to alter their operations. Instead of mindless replication, the robots were assembling the scaffolds needed for starship construction. It would be a long, hard operation.

Of course, with this many enemies and variables, many of these places would be destroyed before they yielded heavy warships. The Overseer didn't care.

It had all the time in the Megaverse.

"Very well then" Hectori said as he called up two images, one of a ship that pulled the surface of the water and all that floated there into it, the other of a large semi submerged ship that had several nets attached to it. "We could probably modify these two for the task especially if we remove the internal storage areas to make room for larger engines to increase the speed of the purification."

"I think that would work wonderfully. We should be ab le to contract out civilian shipyards to aid in their construction"

"Very well then if you will excuse me I will send a mesage to Rock Ledge and Atlantis requesting the production of such devices."

Hectori walked away to the more restricted sending chamber where he placed the thought ring on his head and began his request to the Home world.

when he was finished with the mental connection he sent a mesage to those who had agreed to attend the festival.

“Hail, friends the preparations are made for the festival and you are welcome to join us immediately”

"We move quickly."

Two days later a diplomatic destroyer arrived at the way point. The destroyer was almost all engines, except for a habitation section, and enlarged life support section, and any extremely vital sections. Thus the Monacorans started to wait untill their new contacts showed up.

General Fedayn leaned back in the chair as the Arcane Delegate stood uncomfortably across from him. Fedayn was really going to enjoy this.

"You see this? These are plans for a device by the Atlanteans to trawl our oceans. Now, might I ask why the hell you went above our heads to do this? Why, you had this built? And why, in all the hells, do you seem to want to tick us off?"

The prince sighed.

"What do you want in return? If it is money, money is no objection, but is there anything else you would like?"
"No, no, simply assistance escorting the equipment to earth. The equipment is repossessed surplus, mostly from failed business ventures. The Senate does not wish to divert the ships necessary to adequately defend the transports. Under normal circumstances these structures would certainly cost a bundle; but my government wishes to aid in the humanitarian effort as best it can. Considering the war fleets mulling about in Sol, a small group from each of them might be sufficient to see the transports safely from the edge of Baeloaren space to Earth." he pulled out a data pad, "Unless you have anymore questions, I'll leave you with this package of information, if you need some time to deliberate, just send a message to the Infallible, it will remain in orbit for a while longer."
