Re: Let's Play: Das Thanasboot!
Hearing the claerly insane cook recite his incantation instantly snapped von Dokken out of his rage and back to reality. Dying did not scare him. Not that he wanted to die, he'd simply seen too much death to be put off by it. He wasn't scared of the Anglian hordes. he wasn't afraid of losing everything he owned - he could replace all that. He wasn't even scared of not being remembered, he knew his place in the universe was very small indeed.
But that man...the man who prepares the food...that...barely human creature in the galley. The one who cooked turkey heads in complete silence; the one who could take a can of beans and a pinch of cayenne and turn it into a ham sandwich. The one whose incomprehensible babbling filled the boot at all hours. The man who...talked to his food before preparing it as if calming it, easing it into it's inevitable demise; that man scared him.

Re: Let's Play: Das Thanasboot!
Nikoff warily poked his head around the galley door, to see the abovementioned sight of der Arishkoch kookin der yummee-yummers in almost complete silence, apart from soft borking. Nikoff was quite happy he didn't have to dodge flying pans, utensils, or that verdammt cleaver.
Deciding not to press his luck, he stole quietly away from the galley and back towards the control room, suppressing curses in Zenobian and Thanasian. But, he was alive thanks to the efforts of the skipper, and at the very least, he was going forward to see who in the control room needed or wanted a cup of the strong, corrosive black ... something ... that passed for coffee onboard.
(now, how long until Heinrich Shroomler of the Shroomstapo gets mentioned?)

That was too close...that guy was persistent... Skywalker thought.
"Man, we need to be more careful," he said out loud.

Re: Let's Play: Das Thanasboot!
Welcome to 1943. IRL at the start of the war, ASW tactics were unrefined and simplistic. Even very simple ideas like "starve the fucker out and sink him once he comes up for air" were something that had to be learned. Granted, doing it wasn't always possible, especially when the convoy was being hunted by a wolf pack, because leaving an escort behind to stalk a boot would leave it exposed to attacks by other subs in the area, and the convoy likewise undefended.
But lone destroyers would often give up way too early as well. By 1943, experienced escorts and patrol vessels knew the value of persistence, there were enough escorts to leave destroyers (sometimes even in pairs) to wait around, aircraft were available in quantity to come over and support such efforts, and of course radar, hedgehogs and depth charge projectors were being deployed en masse. It all came together in May 1943 when uboats suddenly began taking absurd losses.
I didn't show you the "news from August" screen that shows up while loading the mission, but it contains the summary of losses in August 1943: 25 boats. Nearly one per day.

Now, time to resume the patrol. And the watch crew better perform next time or von Shapp will serve the rest of the tour as torpedo tube filler.

Thanas tried and true tactic on how to frustrate Achabkowskis:
a) depth. Don't be afraid to go down to 260 meters or even 280.
b) Flank speed to get us down in a straight line. At 80 m, rudder away from him (so that stern slightly points to right or left of escort). Continue on this until course has slightly been changed, then rudder midships. Speed unchanged.
c) At 160 m, repeat maneuver b)
d) At 240/260 silent running + huge course correction of about 10 degrees.
e) Do not show the escort your flank. You always want the bow or stern facing it to minimize sonar profile.
f) Silent running is too loud as it is set at 2 knots. Always manually set it at 1 knots.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

It was amazing what a breath of fresh air and the secure knowledge of survival did the men inside the boot. Well, a dose of the tarry, foul-tasting barely liquid concotion brewed by Der Arishkoch probably helped, too. Nothing ever seemed bad again after a man downed one cup of that.
The ordeal left the crew exhausted and the boot soiled worse than a Soviet Zenobian conscript on the attack, but moods returned quickly enough. After von Doofenberg managed to reorient the map and plot a new course towards their destination, the everyday life aboard took its old rhytm again. Men in the forward compartment would pet Matrosengefreiter von Evilstein and teach the deformed, hissing, scurrying creature to do tricks, like fishing small coins out from the bilges ; The watch crew would stare their eyes out, mindful of Der Kommandants not-veiled threats ; The electrician would sulk inside the e-machinenraum coming up with new wiring schemes, which usually resulted in lots of smoke.
It was the end of the afternoon watch on September 13, with the boot mostly scrubbed and put back together. Radioman Ritterbachen had put together a news report for the crew from BBC and Lehman News broadcasts, which he's gotten into the habit of reading through the boot's PA system.
"...and in other news, in a glourious airborne raid, Motto Korzenny's troops have rescued Thanasia's close friend and ally, herr Mouseolinni, from his illegal captivity by the Allied-aligned traitors! Uh...All hail the glourious Shroomstaffel! So they said on air."
Nobody cheered this incredible success of the Shroomstaffel, which was hardly the most popular of the many and varied paramilitary organizations of the Thanasian state in the best of days. But the telling lack of bombastic gloating about the Eastern Front was...well, telling.
Instead of cheering the crew up, Ritterbachen's little newscast made everyone very obviously sullen and contemplative.
"Ah, ficken this!", he murmured to himself and put on a dumb yet ear-catching Anglian tune.
Der Kommandant smiled to himself as he closed the thin curtain over his bunk. Yes, the radioman knew how the crew ticket.
He was tucked to sleep by a massively, utterly politically inappropriate song playing through the speakers, and the disjointed and false singing of his crew.
Up to mighty London
Came an Irishman one day.
As the streets are paved with gold
Sure, everyone was gay,
Singing songs of Piccadilly,
Strand and Leicester Square,
Till Paddy got excited,
Then he shouted to them there:
It's a long way to Tipperary,
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye, Piccadilly,
Farewell, Leicester Square!
It's a long long way to Tipperary,
But my heart's right there!

"Radio report, Herr Leutnant!", the radioman said, coming into the command compartment. Leutnant Skywalker, who much to his dismay held the night watch as acting commander, jumped up as if a rabid Stenchian just bit him.
"Wha....?", the Bavarian asked. He was in a barely-controlled state of panic, trying to act as if he had any idea how a bootskommandant should behave when in command of the ship, and now this happens!
"Jawohl, herr Leutnant! A reconeissance airplane reports a large, slow enemy convoy to the north of our position."
"Uh...", Skywalker desperately searched for the right terms inside his inexplicably Thanasian brain, "What position, precisely?"
"Grid BE525, approximately"
"Err...thank you! Return to your station"
Leutnant Skywalker took the dispatch and walked up to the chart, trying to act nonchallantly. He was thankful nobody minded the two giant sweat stains under his armpits, as everybody aboard had them - the inside of the ship was hot from the diesel engines, ventillation was inadequate and the crew was only allowed to bring aboard one set of clothes and one spare set of underwear.
After fumbling with the charts for a while, the time-displaced leutnant managed to mark the location, time , course and estimated speed of the reported contact.
Now, the only question remained: what the hell to do about it?

Darn it...why is it always me? What the heck am I supposed to do about this...do I wake the Kommandant? I mean, I'm the weapons officer...not the commander... Skywalker thought, panicking slightly.
"Herr Kommandant...there is a convoy spotted to the north at grid BE525..." Skywalker said, risking waking up Kommandant Thanas.
Man I hope he doesn't shoot me or something...

Nikoff stayed the hell out of discussion like how and where to intercept - that was a problem for the offizieren, not a bootsmann.
As the discussion ramped up, he found himself shuttling more and more between the galley and the control room, taking cups of... um... coffee ... forwards and scuttling aft with the (half)-consumed empties, so far not having to dodge any Koch-propelled projectiles. Somehow, NIkoff wasn't surprised at having to dodge an empty Schnapps bottle on the floor.

A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

Right, no, I meant before he was holding it upside...down...nevermind. I fail at comedy IRL, too.

You fail at comedy and I lack a sense of humour. Well met.

Re: Let's Play: Das Thanasboot!
Unfortunately, that bottle of Schnapps tripped an unaware Leutnant Zwingen, and he fell face-first into the ground. Lifting himself up, he was very mad.fnord wrote:Nikoff stayed the hell out of discussion like how and where to intercept - that was a problem for the offizieren, not a bootsmann.
"Scheisse! Who brought Schnapps inside an U-Boot?! And who was the basterd who left it on the ground?!"

While Zwingen is bellowing in inchoate fury and not actually watching the bottle, Bootsman Huber swoops in.
We've got to get rid of the evidence...
He snatches the cup of coffee from Nikoff's hand. Good, some of Arishkoch's finest. That'll do the trick.
One drop of the stuff, and the merely mortal glassware dissolves into a puddle of unidentifiable liquid...
