The sound of weapons fire intensified as reports began crackling across the vox.

"...with hive weapons, stubbers mostly..." "...coming in on your flank, watch it..." "...they're going for the ventilation shafts! Secure them!"

Nathan opened a vox channel to Prius and Jolan. "A riot wouldn't spread this immediately. I believe our question about the PsyKing's survival has been answered."

The trail led down into the flooded section, where the water was still waist-deep in the corridor.

Gix's response was immediate. "I believe the commissar-colonel is correct. Kill anything in our way."

With a wave of his force rod the inquisitor directed the Legion Xenos troops foreward. His other hand stroked an injector. He might have need of it soon.

"Jolan, you follow the trail. Commissar Ristani and I will see to the riots and attempt to cut off any retreats via gaps in the security," Nathan voxed.

-------------------
The water was warm and brackish. As the Legio entered, they snapped the lights on their weapons and helmets on to illuminate the path. Debris, trash, and the occasional body drifted floated in the listless lake, which had already taken on a rancid smell. The trail was definitely not the flavor of the PsyKing as Jolan knew it... it was a much weaker, fainter trail. Nevertheless, it was the only one they'd discovered that led away from the crater.

"Move it," said Gix. Throne, he wished he had either Hethor or Severa to back him up. Chou's instincts would be good here as well. But he was alone with these conscript scum. He pressed the advance. What else could he do?

The legio troopers advanced in careful, cautious fashion, covering each other. They moved in eerie silence, barely rippling the water as they passed. The trail continued along several curves and cutbacks, before reaching an emergency door. However, the track didn't run past the door, but rather to a high ventilation shaft on the wall, one too small for passage by the normal-sized human.

The Lone Eldar was lifted up into the vent duct, a landing pod soon crashed down not to far away...

"Master Nathan informed me that you needed my presence?"

she recalled some of her fellow novices finding tight spaces uncomfortable, but she was not one of them. However going in the vent without armour would be unwise.

Gix recoiled from the pariah. "Yes, Lillith. I am sure you will be helpful."

Even for a lithe eldar and Lillith, the passage was incredibly tight, as movement was reduced to a painful shimmy. Then their lives became even more complicated as they reached the first junction. Left, right, or straight ahead?

A strange chattering sound echoed down the ventilation shaft, the precise nature impossible to determine, as well as distance.

Into her vox, Lillith made a request

Someone please send some servo skulls, I don't think we have the room to turn around too easily, but if this is like a regular hive they will meet up again on a regular basis, besides they will move faster then we can...

The chittering sound is answered by a chittering from another side. Whatever's out there, there's more than one...

Two skulls floated down the passage and up towards the narrow vent.

As the eldar waited in the junction, the only warning he had that something was coming was the slightest of patters of motion, before something launched itself at his face, all vicious fangs bared...

The eldar was flung backwards, as a barely recognizable phrase in gothic, "Kill, Kill!!!, Die!!!!"

the priaha's bolt pistol, answered in a deafoning boom, inside the tight corridores spraying xeno, and sister both in the creature's vile gore.

The rat had barely been disintigrated by the shot when a veritable storm of furry, chittering creatures erupted from the tunnel, charging heedlessly at the eldar.

Flamers would be better, as the shuriken canatpult's whines was interspirced with the frightful roar of the interspirced bolt shots. the damaged hive support structures shook from the fury of the assult, while both parties were now completly deafened.

Soon the shaft was clogged with rat corpses, a twitching, furry mass that occasionally emitted a feeble chitter. They had kept coming, crawling over the corpses of the dead to get at the intruder, until there were simply none left.

Blood flowed out of the Eldar's mask, blood stained Lillith's hood, and her collar, her healing began to kick in. her eardrums would fully recover with time, at this point however she could not hear what was being said, just the flicker of the vox unit, keying the vox in static mode she passed down a coded message...

The legio troopers had taken up defensive positions as soon as the shooting started. When it stopped and the coded message arrived, they looked at Adivan and Gix, then one of them unstrapped his flamer.

"Think a servo skull could drag it down the shaft?" he asked, musingly.

Nathan voxed Prius and the Arbites and guard.

"All troopers gas warfare protocols are now in effect .All troops without breathers retreat all others secure your masks now."

Prius fought down a surge of irritation at Nathan. His orders had been simple and explicit. Shoot to kill. With the possibility of the PsyKing using the crowds to cover his escape, the only hope the Guard and arbites had of catching him was by ruthless means. It was worth the life of every civilian in this block if they could stop the bastard here. Emperor only knew what kind of carnage he would have managed if Gix hadn't interrupted him, forcing him to commit his blasphemous vessel to combat earlier.

And these treacherous bastards were engaging with lethal weapons, no less, and at point blank range. The troops didn't have time to disengage, switch weapons, or put on breathers. But they would follow the orders of an inquisitor, even if it got them killed.

Killed to no good purpose. He said a prayer to the Emperor, imploring him to recognize that these men were dying following orders given with His Holy Authority.

They die in your cause, of sins not their own. Please find it in your mercy to take them home.

'Heavily engaged here!" "On the right on the right he's got a auto..." "Need assistance!"

Prius accelerated. Ahead he could see the mob overwhelming one of the strongpoints. Lifting his plasma pistol, he aimed, then fired a bolt over the heads of the crowd. It sizzled and echoed.

He ignited his energy blade. If they closed with them, barring specific orders from Nathan he would kill as many of the treacherous bastards as he could reach before they bore him down.

Nathan checked his helment as the first shells landed .He nodded as the crowds began to scream in fear and terror as the gas duisabled them .A few tried to remoive the respirators the Arbites wore but were cut down. one rioter tried to pull a mask on and was shot.

Prius watched as the rioters he was going to fight ,had two shells land amongst them. Those not puking there guts out were clawing at there eyes and screaming.

Nathan spoke over the vox to Prius. "Do NOT use a flame ..Stumm gas is combustable but if you must use one set it off inside an enemy held area"

As if to accentuate that point a rioter fired off his flamer as a shell landed near him, the resultant explosion easily killed him and the group he was with.

Gix overheard the vox traffic. He hoped Nathan wasn't going to get any of his troops killed. Violence and brute force were not Jolan's first choice of tools, but when called for they should be employed unsparringly. No half measures.

He suppossed Prius might think him soft. Prius only had the ability to form opinions because Jolan hadn't had him killed at the beginning of this affair. Overall, Jolan thought sparing Prius was a good decision.

With a touch he had his electoo show the servo skull's display. He used his telekinesis to send the flamer down the corridor and used the servo skull to guide his effort. It would fade out near Lillith, of course, but it would be close enough for her to retrieve.

"We need to keep moving, Inquisitor. There are other strongpoints being attacked."

He wanted to order the arbites to execute the whole lot as a sign of what happens when Imperial order is defied, but he didn't have time for the discussion.

Then something caught his eye.

"Nathan," he said, turning to trot over to a corridor wall. As he approached, he suddenly stopped, his stomach turning over. Painted on the wall was a writhing glyph.

Fear. Anger. Flee. Destroy. The emotions it inspired were strong, but his hexagrammatic ward acted to blunt the effect. Offering a prayer to the Emperor for strength, he aimed the plasma pistol at the glyph and waited for Nathan to look it over, then give him the word to destroy it.
