Eketrina Cluster
Hudson System, Ouster Occupation Zone, Edge of Known Space
Celicia su Elysium, Speaker for the Council of the Hajr and current holder of power among the harbingers of the Diaspora surveyed the shipyards with a critical eye. They were, as all Ouster constructs, almost organic in their flowering, being constructed as needed, free-form objects built and discarded for the simple purposes they had to fulfill. The massive lattice before her stretched over twenty miles in length, an ephemeral womb of metal and stone, lit up with a billion spotlights, glistening like some massive pearl. Ensconsed in the construction yard was a Fleet Tender, the fourth of her class ever built.
She was almost complete- the Divinity of Purpose, a ship designed to play mother to the half-dozen supercapital warships forming around her. The vast influx of resources, combined with the steady flood of new Hajr members from the main systems, had allowed the construction to proceed at an increased pace. The Divinity, along with her attendent capital vessels, would be completed soon- and with their completion, the Hajr would be the foremost naval power in Known Space.
Sayus su Ithaca approached the Speaker.
"How much more construction can our holdings support? At this rate, I imagine we will soon be forced to slow our pace."
She made a negative gesture.
"No, Sayus. Our holdings in Edean and Jormungandr are coming to fruition. Over the last month, the extraction clusters have moved in. They are working hard, faced with abundance of both manpower and material. Our freighters can barely keep up with the influx. In another few months, our Clusters in Krynor and Arcanist territory will begin to bloom as well. Work has already begun on a second Fleet Tender womb over Edean- we will be able to increase our fleet by 50% a construction cycle in just another year."
Sayus smiled.
"And I can imagine that the reason the 1st War Cluster remains in Hudson is so that we can react, should someone attempt to take advantage of the sudden revelations concerning Eylsium's location."
"You were a wise choice. Artus would be proud. To be honest, I didn't think we'd be able to keep it secret for long."
Outside, work continued. The vast construction yards would soon be releasing the 4th War Cluster's heavy units- four Attack Carriers and a pair of massive Cataphracts. The Hajr's ascendance in the region was continuing unabated.

Another level taken. And another contested. The Primary Programmer was impressed, at least. These organics weren't the soft, weak flesh of their cousins.Pablo Sanchez wrote:They pressed on, and in the levels now taken but still relatively intact, dhampir officers arrived to search for evidence of the mages' betrayal.
It had been built to die here, it knew that. It had become haughty, arrogant at the pathetic offerings from the other Organics. These beings were going to smash through. But it didn't matter. They had already secured the level where the conferences were supposedly conducted, already captured the chambers where recordings were kept. The manufactured evidence was in their hands.
It would have been nice to hear the Overseer again. But fate had decided not to make it so. The conspirators would be dealt with, the Programmer knew. It armed the antimatter charges on the lowest level around it, and waited. Most of the security forces were gone. Only a few Spider Drones were collected for the last stand.

Toril, Ruined Arcanist Embassy
R'hlloran Hunter-Killers and Subterranean Hunters plunged into the underground maze once again, hundreds upon hundreds. More armored deep-borers carved out shafts for the battle tanks waiting above, which then ascended on their thrusters just behind the infantry forces. Ahead of the infantry were swarms of nasty little automatons loaded with explosives that would kamikaze any enemy forces, clearing the way for the main troops. The siliconoids had to be taken out, and the soon the better.
Toril Orbit
Holding to the advice of his fellow AIs, Thauglor commanded the fleet to go back home, as it appeared the R'hllorans wouldn't be facing Arcanist resistance any longer. A few ships lingered, mostly to support the ground forces on the planet currently fightning the siliconoids.
Ships remaining in system:
3 carriers
4 cruisers
8 frigates
1 Obsidian command ship

The planetary shields went up, the fighter squadrons pulled back, and the surface cannons powered up. The 13 called an emergency conference, and met within the bowels of Manifold. First Speaker Kjna'ln, as was his duty, briefed the council. Fellows, undoutedly you know of the situation already. A siliconoid fleet has appeared in our system, and are threatening to destroy our star if we do not surrender within 2 hours. This is, of course, unacceptable. The fleet is still 35 hours away, so we're on our own, at least for now. How they expect to destroy the star is unknown, but they did mention stargate technology. Our own stargate, luckily, is secured in a remote, deep space location, so the attack can't come through there. Our planetary shields can shrug off prolonged bombardment, and our surface defenses can annihilate anything that comes within range. But I doubt they will hold against the destruction of a star. We will evacuate all of our civilians into the deep tunnels, as well as however many robots we can spare. Other than that, there isn't much else we can do.

"What about the un-colonized systems at the edge of our space?"

"Have the Monacoarns accepted our offer regarding the Aries class yet?"
"Admiral Nakema is still meeting with them."

"What about the Arcane situation?"
"It has been dealt with, albiet not in the way we wanted."

"The world that has been smashed by Arcanist weapons? Our sensors are working just fine. We will assist in smashing any Siliconoids found, and if Arcane involvement in the Rape is proven then our role changes. I'm sorry, but I have my orders. They have offered to allow Monacoran inspectors. I fail to see why you won't take them up on it; I think the Monacorans are by far the least likely to cover up anything they might find considering their circumstances."Hotfoot wrote:Arcane Empire Space

<<What the fuck is wrong with your sensors? Don’t you see the planet over there, the one crawling with mechanoids? The one the Arcanists gave to them? They’ve kept a major Mechanoid installation secret from the rest of the fucking galaxy for over a MONTH after the Rape of Terra. There is obviously something going on here, and we need to find out what. The very survival of all life in this galaxy depends on stopping these damn robots as quickly as possible.>>
<<The Arcanists have done wrong. They provided assistance to a known enemy of sentience. The existence of that machine-infested world is proof enough of that by itself. If you can’t see that, you’re either blind or brainwashed by the Arcanists.>>

We do not see how you believe that our forces cannot hold Ix'agal. Our Marines and Army personnel that were pulled out for the defense of Terra will return there within the next day, and despite the unrest, the insurgents have demonstrated little ability to inflict significant harm upon our forces without the benefit of foreign aid. Further, the forces of the United Protectorates have the policing situation under control. We thank you for your concern, but we are not in such need as to ask you to risk your troops in a conflict that has not thus far involved you and which you have no real stake in. Good day.

"Damn it. We've failed..." Admiral Fisher switched his trasnmitter back on. "Acknowledged, Arcane control. Although we sincerely hope that we won't disappear any time soon." He half-smiled wanly. "Although we still think that this isn't necessary, it is your nation and your judgment."The best thing for our people, is to retreat from this plane. We have enough territory and vibrant enough trade there to keep us living comfortably until the rest of your civilizations go the way of the Right Whale(they would be extinct by now)

<<You sure have a funny definition of smashed. It’s still there, and still crawling with machines. Looks to me like all they did was a quick smash and grab to get any evidence they could find out before anyone else could see it. The fact that they only bothered to try and deal with it after the fact of its existence was revealed speaks more than any empty words proclaiming innocence.>>
<<And in case you haven’t noticed, they’re not letting anyone down on the planet until after they’ve had time to pack up and leave. Now we’re not going to find a damn thing, because anything they might have had that was even slightly incriminating will be gone, taken with them to wherever the hell it is they’re going. Even if there wasn’t any evidence at all, that’s the exact message they are sending to the rest of the galaxy by doing this.>>
<<We will assist the Monacorans in the landing, and we will take the Arcanists up on their oh so ever gracious offer, but at this point, it’s too little, too late. They’ve fucked themselves twelve ways to Andromeda now, son. Maybe if you looked at the facts right in front of your damn eyes you’d see that.>>

Ix'ador
The troop transports, which had not been needed at the defense of Earth, returned to Ix'ador to resume the occupation. There were riots on the world. The Army units left behind were holding positions but they could not venture out without either inflicting or taking unacceptable casualty levels. The Marines were returning to change that.
C-420 Echo-274
405th Marine Infantry Division, A Company was going into the hottest landing area: The Army post on the western edge of the Temple City. Fortunately, they were prepared to deal with this.
"Gas canisters ready, sir. This'll knock 'em out real good."
"Good, Sergeant," responded Captain Banks. "We drop on the first pass and come back around for landing on the second. Open the rear landing doors."
The Pelican transport flew low, the others carrying the rest of the company spacing out to either side. As they came in over the crowd, gas dispensers began spraying a thick white mist over the riot zone. It was a nonlethal gas, formulated to knock out creatures of Terran physiology for anywhere from half an hour to two hours, dependent upon body weight. The rioters below would begin to cough and slump to the ground in just a minute. The transports swung out over the base to the fist pumping of Army ground-pounders (in NBC gear) below, and came around to land at the edges of the crowd using their VTOL variable-direction jets. The transports only touched down for a few seconds while Marines piled out the back and sprinted for cover, the underslung attachments on their rifles fitted with stun guns instead of the usual grenade launchers, as the Pelicans took off and cleared the fire zone. Normally they would pump chain gun and rocket fire at the enemy, but not today. Today they were facing angry civilians quickly succumbing to knockout gas, not armed and trained enemy troops fitted with NBC gear. The Marines advanced towards the crowd, gas masks covering their mouths and nose. Goggles fitted to their eyes to avoid irritation from the gas. They waited to see if anything came out of that cloud as it dissipated in the wind.

The message announcing that the data had been recovered was sent up, and the fleet responded quickly. The orcs withdrew swiftly, finally showing some tact as they executed a near-perfect textbook withdrawal. Whatever wounded that could be evacuated were carried with, and the rearguard quickly reached the transports.SirNitram wrote:It armed the antimatter charges on the lowest level around it, and waited. There was nothing on the moon of value anymore, it was time to raze it. The fleet opened fire with everything it had, carving craters into the surface and blasting what remained of the installation to smithereens. The antimatter mines that had been planned as a trap turned on their owners, detonating under the bombardment and finishing the last vestiges of the mechanical presence there. A few more fire missions were called down for good measure, to ensure that nothing could survive.
Now the analysts aboard the Szeged began to pore over the collected evidence...
Message to Nashtar Republic
If that is your analysis we will comply with your wishes and pity your incompetence. Your assertion that the terrorists are too weak to pose a threat without foriegn aid is foolish in the extreme, as they are manifestly recieving such aid in great quantities. At least three of the former Covenant planets (Ezekiel, Rebkah, and Sacrament) now stand entirely unoccupied and in the hands of the native fanatics. Even as we exchange these messages fundamentalist priests and temple authorities are attempting to seize control, opposed in these efforts by ultra-militant (and likely foreign-sponsored) terrorists. The situation on these planets is currently chaotic but we estimate that in a matter of months the terrorists will have gained power and solidified it to the point that the planets will require a major military effort to be retaken, at great cost in life.
Ix'agal itself is insufficiently guarded, as you have diverted your forces to pointlessly guard a system which has already been destroyed and the Arcanists have abandoned it. You are also stretched thin with your current commitments and likely lack the capacity to garrison the vacant territory with the force counts required to hold it. If you attempt to hold all the planets, you will dilute scarce resources and you will fail. If you do not hold all the planets, those successful in reforming the Covenant will become rallying points for dissent in those planets, the situation in your occupation zone will spiral out of control, and you will fail.
As you have refused our assistance, which was freely given with only the most minor expectation of recompense, our troops will return home.

"Smashed surface facilities, place crawling with orcs... Did you really expect the Arcanians to be able to destroy the entire planet? That's beyond any of our capabilities, or if it isn't then its news to me. I'd flee too if I had the starfleets of half a dozen nations menacing my capital and the means to escape." He took a deep breath. "We still propose that this evacuation doesn't have to be necessary if the battle fleets pull away now and the shield is lowered for inspectors. But expecting the Arcanians to lower their shields with a fleet battle going on in orbit is madness. Even if you wouldn't intentionally fire on the planet, the planet would have been hit. That is the nature of orbital battles, as the Rape of Terra so disatrously proved. And the looting of the Jardanians doesn't exactly inspire confidence in this coalition's intentions."Hotfoot wrote:Arcane Empire Space

When they do, the fighting will stop, and anyone, like those dipshit opportunistic Jardanians, who try to keep fighting, I will personally blow out of the sky myself. They’re going to have hell to pay when they get back, because they sure as hell were not acting under Monacoran orders in that little joyride. Fuck, I bet if you ask nicely, the Monacorans might even give you the people responsible so you can ream them yourselves.>>
<<Damn thing is, it doesn’t matter any more. Innocent or guilty, they ran. You can justify it however you like in the pinhead of yours, but those of us with more than two synapse to rub together are going to see this for what it is, a huge, stinking admission of guilt, and an unwillingness to face the consequences for their actions.>>

You can justify it however you like in the pinhead of yours, but those of us with more than two synapse to rub together are going to see this for what it is, a huge, stinking admission of guilt, and an unwillingness to face the consequences for their actions.>>

"I'm not going to argue this anymore. Its in the hands of the Arcanians now anyway; my offer is made. We're moving out for the Machine embassy to see what we can do, but we will not fire on Arcanian units without provocation." The fleet began to move out towards the Machine world, gunners prepared to pound it into scrap in frustration if the orders came. Intellectually everyone knew that there was little left within the guns' power to reach, but most of the crew wanted to take something out, anything. Antiship shells were removed from the railguns and replaced with ground-piercing ordnance. Any Siliconoid or functioning Siliconoid structure within gun reach would eat tons of c-fractional steel within seconds of detection.
"Hold fire. Unless something on that surface starts shooting at us, I don't want anything touched. Signal the Blood Kingdom forces. Tell them that we wish to assist if they need orbital support."

<<I’d suggest staying clear of the Vampires. They seem to be doing a good enough job on their own, and they don’t seem to be interested in asking for help. Just sit down over in your corner and wait for the big boys to finish. Once the Vamps are done, we’ll let the Monacorans go in first. Until that point, put down your guns. Belisario de Valencia got on the comm, "Alpha Fleet, we have catalogued and reviewed evidence recovered from the embassy prior to its destruction. We've already made copies and documented our findings, we will transfer the original exhibits to you as soon as you are prepared to recieve them."
"From what we understand so far," the Admiral-Marquis continued, "it looks very bad for the Arcane Empire's credibility. There is further evidence of collusion between Raistlin Majere and the siliconnoids. Even worse, we've found experimental attempts to harness magic for enhancement of their basic mechanical shells, which would indicate a large scale cooperative effort on the part of the mages."

Capital System, Realm of the Blood King
Elanie's eyes fluttered open. She was lying in her vast chamber in Basil's estate, dressed in a nightgown more expensive than all the clothes she'd ever worn put together. Her memory was fuzzy.
Deja vu. I've got to stop waking up like this.
She dressed quickly in one of the more plain dresses in her wardrobe. It was a true novelty; such clothing was completely impractical on a Cluster. It was the first time she had worn such clothing as anything besides a tool to achieve a clean assassination. Oddly enough, no servant attempted to assist her, a fact for which she gave brief thanks.
She stopped, suddenly, dropping the knife she was about to secret beneath her bodice.
Of course there's no servant. I... ate the last one. They probably haven't brought a new one over yet.
She shook her head harshly, and took off the dress. She pulled on her old skinsuit, shorts, and vest. It was comforting.
Over the last day, she had spent her free time musing on how to kill Basil. Certainly, she did not want to kill him at this point- it had been an intellectual excercise. So far, she had come to only one conclusion- that she knew far too little to come to any conclusions. She needed Basil, needed him badly. She also felt that she owed him some small debt. She had chosen this, and without it, she would at best be a cripple relegated to a Hajr desk-job, with no chance of preserving her legacy with either children or fame.
She needed some degree of trust if Basil was going to teach her everything about her new state- and she had an idea.
Elanie was ushered into the Blood Lord's study by a Dhampir majordomo.
"Lord Basil. I'd like to make an.... offer to you."
He looked amused, but smiled and nodded.
"Please, continue."
"As you know, I am now a freewoman- unbound completely since my schism with the Hajr. I bear no ties but those I chose to take. One can attempt to be my master, one can force me, but I will not submit. My freedom is mine alone to give."
The blood lord was expressionless.
"I don't think you trust me, Basil. I think you may suspect that the Hajr let me come here as a knife aimed at the vitals of the Blood Kingdom, as a spy for their boundless ambition."
"I want everything, Basil. I want to know it all. I want to harness my new form to its utmost, and I want it as soon as possible- so here is my offer. I, Elanie su Madrighala, will Bind myself, in word and deed, to your service, for five years. In that time, I will obey your will as my own. My life-" at this she paused, grimaced slightly, and continued. "Will be in you hands. I will take the title of Boundwoman and be your creature in the entirety, until either five years are up, or you choose to terminate our agreement."
"I have two simple conditions. First, I will not slay any members of the Hajr's high councils. I still hold loyalty to my people. Secondly, you will teach me everything. Nothing will be held back."
"So, Lord- do we have an agreement?"
-ooc- I assume that if the bloodbond gives you any control over Elanie, thus negating the need for such an agreement, Elanie just doesn't know abou it. She hasn't considered the possibility that you would be able to control her mind due to the fact you made her a vampire- There's not much old vampire literature sitting about in the Clusters

The message came at twelve hours to the deadline, as the fleet continued to dodge the occasional extreme-range shot. One of the Destroyers had already departed from the main group to approach the star itself.

The First Speaker opened a channel to the Overseer fleet:
The naquadria is located...rather deeply underground, I daresay. And the star is far too old, small, and weak to go nova. (OOC: It's an M-class star)Even if it did, I would not count on it doing much damage. More than two thirds of our infastructure is located underground, and the planetary shields can disperse or reflect the brunt of the nova. You are wasting your time.

"Damn, damn, damn..."
"That sums it up it very well I think." Brain answered his cousin.
"Are the allegations true?"
"Doesn't really matter now does it? However, our techs are convinced that alot of it was fake."
"But not all of it?" The Lord Portector asked.
"You can't fake a planet full of machines. Not very well anyways. Everyone grabbing filmsy evendence and waving it around as gospel. But there is that planet."
"No statement about this then. It's done anyways. Ring up the Alteanians and the others we need a meeting and we need to figure something out fast."

A ship at extreme range is a difficult target to hit from a planet. A planet, on the other hand, is nearly impossible to miss. The hundreds of railguns began firing again.

3 massive, subterranean shield generators took effect as soon as the railguns began firing, drawing power from the rest of the planet. The shields strengthened ten-fold, then a hundred-fold. The railgun shells vaporized harmlessly on the shield. It is you who are ignorant, siliconoid. said the First Speaker, who then cut off the channel.

"We have good news. 20 Mark classes, 10 Johns and Lukes have been completed. In another few days we've have 3 Davids and 4 Ruths ready to go as well." Fleet Adrimal Anderson reported.
"Very good. What the status on the new ship yards?" Brain Mattews asked.
"Those will take another year. The new Dreadnoughts eat up alot manhours, As do the Rebeccas and Moshes."
"So be it. We're going to need those ships soon."

Thauglor opened a channel to the fleet, his tone grim.
It seems we have a crisis at Halo. The siliconoids are threatening to destroy it's star with a stargate. They are most likely bluffing, but nonetheless we should make all haste forward. Accelerate to Tier 5, and we can make it in less than 10 hours.
