Pater studied the Dataslate. The Mars-class cruiser The Emperor's Divine Retribution was ready to go. The Traders had left some hours before; Good, he didn't want bodies clogging his line of fire, and he wouldn't trust them as far as he could throw the Wager if he press-ganged them.

An hour later, he was gone. He wouldn't get to his destination for a while.

"This was just the beginning," Prius said, marching along the front of the battalion. "Too long have the heretics clustered in your midst. Now you will visit the righteous wrath of the Emperor upon them!"

They had done well enough, for PDF. They had fought and died and killed the enemy as they did. But 'well enough' was not enough to meet his exacting standards. He would settle for nothing less than the purest of holy zeal, the utmost of devotion.

"Guard, PDF, it matters not! All that matters is that you feel the burning rage of the Emperor in your soul! The mutant and the heretic would steal your world, ravage your home, and murder your family! HATE!" he bellowed. "Hate him with all your heart! Take that hate and feed the fire by which we will cleanse this world! DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"

He lofted his newly acquired chainsword, brandishing it high. "FIRE AND VICTORY! VICTORY!"

This was one of the many units he would be addressing throughout the day, as he worked to spur them on their most holy task.

"The Commissariat is the conscience of the Guard," Prius informed the fresh-faced cadets. They were hardly younger than him, generally seventeen to eighteen. But there was a vast gulf of experience between them, and they watched his every move with awe.

"And on this world, rot has festered and seethed for long enough. Trust only in the Inquisition, and abide not the sins of laxity or leniency. We must be brutal and unrelenting in restoring order to our forces here. Cadets, this is nothing less than a purge. When we are through, the armies and offices of this world will be once again worthy of the gaze of the God-Emperor. We are the conscience, and we will strike down any who divert from orthodoxy, for it is our most sacred task. Bow your heads and pray to the Emperor with me for victory in our endeavors."

Gix waited for the magnates to file in. His meeting with the Ecclesiarchy had gone smoothly. The events of the previous weeks had shaken them and his summery execution at the beginning of the meeting had shown that he was in charge and ready to clear house. It was too bad that none of the Ecclesiarchs had been clearly guilty of anything, but the killing had been a necessary demonstration of power and resolve.

Gix thumbed the reports. Almost no serving member of the navy of the PDF had actually been a part of the Chaos uprising. The cultists on station had been press ganged ratings and the ones on planet had not been PDF. He would have executed the starfort's chief commissar if that gentlemen hadn't already committed suicide.

The magnates sat down nervously. Word of Gix's purge had already spread. Inquisitors were bad enough during normal times, but after a disaster of this magnitude heads were going to roll.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," Gix began, "let us begin. As you know I am investigating the heretical uprising that has taken place and taking the measures necessary to crush it. You are the heads of the most powerful industrial families, corporations, and combines on this planet. Many of you have holdings throughout this subsector and are undoubtedly aware of this time of trial."

"But before we can address the problems of this subsector, we must put our own house in order. The heretics did not obtain weapons and munitions, for the most part, from the armories of the Planetary Defence Forces. That theft was not uncovered because it never happened. Which leaves me with the question of who armed them." Several magnates squirmed.

"Checking your records has been most revealing. Orders for raw materials checked against production and tithe records has revealed several discrepancies. Discrepancies that preceed major investments of capital."

"Military goods were sold to unauthorized buyers. Some of those buyers were heretics and traitors. The punishment for this is death. I will not be so merciful." Black armoured enforcerers entered the room. Several magnates struggled against an invisible, pinning force. Slaps with shock mauls left the targeted three stunned as the enforcers bound them.

"You have conspired against the Imperium and the God-Emperor of Mankind. Your greed has caused countless numbers to be lost to death and damnation. I hereby sentence every adult member of your families to serve in the penal legions until the have perished. Every child and unfit adult will be brainwiped into a servitor. Every member of the ruling council will atone as penitent engine or as an arcoflagellent. May the God-Emperor have mercy on your souls."

"As I speak orders of total confiscation have gone out. Your household codes were not equal to the task of defying Inquisitional Cryptological examination. Orders under your authority have already transfered resources and reassigned personel. By the time the Inquisitional relief forces have reached those troubled systems, your treasonously acquired holdings will be available for their use."

Gix stopped speaking for a moment. He became aware of the quiet sobbing and the looks of abject fear. "As for the rest of you, we can now move to the business of how much of your family resources you will commit to helping alleviate the crisis throughout the subsector. I trust you will give me no reason to doubt your fidelity."

Elsewhere:

"I can't move."

"of course not, unlike the inquistioners I want you to truely suffer. What's the worse thing to do to a Khornite, leave them living but perminatly parazlyzed."

"Who are are?"

"Call me Mister Black, who do you think alerted the Iquistion to this place and time."

"Why did you do this, I can smell the warp, and chaos on you."

"Don't compare me to yourself, Khornate. I am deticated to the destruction of all your kind."

Black left the room, before him was a small altar, to the many toothed one, Malal, the renegade brother. Malal had directed him to send for the emporer's pawns, soon the blood of chaos will run, he wondered if the inquistionares would appreciate his latest gifts. the paralyzed traitor, and the sample of the nerve agent that made it possible, to finish the operation, they would see the skill with which he had perfectly only sevared the vuluntary muscles, cautarized, and placed simple plasticine caps on the ends...

"Black" was just a mask now, he had once been an inquistionar, a judge of men. his hatred for chaos had only been matched by his hatred of his masters, and the bloated incompetant administrum. how far they had fallen from what the emporer had started. he had learned to give into his true hatred, it had felt good. Now the many toothed one guided him, the player of pawns, the fallen judge, the fallen angel.

Prius checked his shock maul again, then looked to his cadets and his newly formed strike force, culled from the ranks of the PDF.

"Give praise to the Emperor, He on Terra that gives wayward souls such as these a final chance to serve His glory," he announced as small-arms fire spattered off the hull of the lander.

Gix's codes once again had proven to be good, and the heavier defenses on the spire residence had been disabled.

All over the planet, similar strikes were taking place as PDF forces swooped in on the holdings of the renegade merchants, seizing their estates, their grounded vessels, and their other properties.

The vessel lurched and angled downward, the final plunge before landing. Prius lowered his faceplate.

"Speak now with me... I am the Emperor's sword and the Emperor's shield..."

No mercy, by order of Gix. All young and old were to be taken for service to the Imperium. All praise to the Emperor...

Cyrus Gamma

"This world is ours." Genevit Markos said, pacing in front of the large holographic map. "The followers of the corpse Emperor hold out in the southern portion of this Tinsinus," he gestured toward the southern continent. "Crush them utterly."

His aides shuffled about, eager to please the dark warlord. The governor's palace made an excellent command center, hardened against conventional strikes and possessed of an advanced command and control suite.

Out in front of the massive palace cheering mobs hurled debris at the governor, who was protected by a powerful refractor field. He writhed in pain, oblivious to the treachery of his former subjects, as his rerouted digestive system slowly trickled bile into his lungs, a drop at a time...

--------------------------
Major Sadler crouched by the astropath. "We have to get the message out. We can't hold out much longer... send again."

They had fallen back to the jungles of Tinsinus, hard-pressed by the enemy legions. He had broken his command up into company and platoon-sized elements, the better to carry on a desperate guerilla war.

Lord inquisitors this arrived at the arbite head quarters...

on the table was a three meter tall bundle of bulged muscles, and warp scars. Clearly a Traitor Marine. Screaming obsenities, and demanding death. pumps and machines, kept the chest rising and falling, simple ceramics kept the incapacitating wounds from healing.

The mutated abonimation's body had been deliberatly surgically crippled, every tendon severed, cautoarized and then capped so it could not be regenerated; The spinal cord had been cut in half with a wafer of ceramic preventing it from regrowing, a section of it's skull had been removed, so that wires could run in and out of it's brain. extensive lifesupport machinery kept the thing from dieing even by shutting down it's heart.

The creature's skull cap was placed between it's legs and held a small vial of some unkown substance.

Prius studied the dataslate, sitting on one of the ridiculously overstuffed chairs in the spire household. Operation Purification had gone off well, with minimal opposition and light casualties, all objectives completed. He took a drink from his canteen and looked at the cadet who brought him the slate.

"Signal C&C, all objectives completed as ordered, then send in lieutenant Kaslin."

He rose to his feet, ignoring the stain his smoke and dirt-stained battledress had left on the nigh-priceless furniture. The PDF officer entered, assuming a position of attention.

"Lieutenant Kaslin, reporting as order, sir!" he barked sharply. He was part of an attached PDF element that had landed to mop up after Prius' people had torn the heart out of the resistance.

"Lieutenant Kaslin," Prius said, setting down his canteen. "What was all the screaming about in the residential wing?" He turned back to look at the man with his stony gaze.

"Well colonel-comissar," Kaslin began, his composure slipping. "They're all going to be wiped, no point letting them go to waste..."

"You are aware that rape is a capital offense among the Guard, are you not?" Prius said coldly. "It represents a lack of discipline among the soldiers and NCOs, and poor examples set by the officers above them."

"I..." Kaslin said, his voice trailing off.

"You are incompetent and a failure in the eyes of the Emperor," Prius replied, drawing his pistol.

------------------------
"See to it that the rest are interrogated. Those who participated will be executed, those who simply watched will be stripped of rank and shifted to the penal units," Prius told his cadets as he walked back to the lander for transport back to command.

It was good all around. The cadets would get first-hand practice in summary field justice, and the PDF would get a solid example of the price of failure to adhere to regulations.

The status of Zelnor Prime was of the highest priority. The loss of such a major warp route would severely limit the Imperium's options. To delay would not only risk the world falling, but allow the enemy the opportunity to foritfy the system. That could not be risked. Cyrus Gamma would have to wait.

As Inquisitional forces reestablished Imperial authority on the planet below, Task Force Sanctus assembled. If Zelnor Prime could be held, then they could return for the troops that Gix and Ristani had raised and engage the enemy at Cyrus Gamma.

"Lord Captain." said the the sorcerer nervously. Captain Skyranx was not a forgiving man.

"What is iti sorcerer?" replied the inhuman abomination sitting on the command throne.

"My augaries have revealed a presence looming in the future. An Imperial force."

"Then we should welcome them to this system," rasped Captain Skyranx.

the chemical appears to be a rapidly dispersing paralactic agent.

if it wasn't sealed up in it's little vial here it would effect this room. It appears that the traitor marine was rendered helpless by a sniper bolt rifle, equiped with an auto injection system instead of an explosive charge. More sure then inhilation, and the only way to get past the built in defenses of a marine or some of your more dangerous xenos.

If reproduced and set in missile form, it would enable us to capture whole blocks, however it would take weeks for full rehabilitation of the rioters and the influenced, as well as the civilians.

The material is dirived from multipal sources, primarily catachan wasp venom, and an off shoot on ork spoors, the spoors counter act the leathality of the wasp venom, prevent one from using warp related abilities, and cause increased sensory perception.

the table is Dark Eldar in design, a device used to keep a torcher victim alive as long as possible so as to enhance the duration of their suffering. It was however made from local componets.

Nathan sighed the last few messages werent good but the lines would be held open...the cost however. He scanned said map and nodded Gix was doing his duty as was Prius. Pater....no idea how he was doing and Advian was trying to find the tech .......

Time to act....

"any word about Lord Inquisitor Vonrilyental yet?"

" None your Lordship"

Nathan frowned at tht....he knew something was definitely wrong but he had nothing concrete.

Orders passed from Lord Vonrilyental's hand. The apparent urgency of uprisings necessitated immediate action. Inquisitors Novum, Adivan, and Trestam; who were not immediately performing any important chores, were ordered to accompany Task Force Sanctus as it maneuvered to enter the Warp.

An observant man would note that none of the afformentioned inquisitors were doing anything that Lord Vonrilynetal couldn't do in system. Such an individual might also note that all three inquisitors were planning to leave the system soon. Furthermore, such individuals had discussed bombarding cities under Vonrilyental's jurisdiction without Lord Vonrilyental being present. An apologist for said inquisitors might have mentioned that there were certain difficulties at the time. The afforementioned observer might note that inquisitional politics was very rough indeed.

For whatever reasons, the inquisitors and their retinues were dispatched with great urgency.

------------------------------------------------------

Captain Shanan looked out of the observation deck of the mighty Mars class battlecruiser Divine Retribution. The blast shields were down, protected naked human eyes from the horror that was the Warp. Outside the Cobra class Destroyers, Pilium Squadron, paced their larger brother. Shark, Darter, Swift and Matchless had served together for more than seven years and the Pilium Squadron was a fine choice of escorts.

Shanan was not aussaged by their competence. He was carrying inquistors on his ship, men with the power to seize control of his vessel. Trestam, Novum, Adivan and their menagerie had boarded his vessel and were in control of this mission. Lord Vonrilyental had sent them ahead to secure the system, mercifully keeping Inquisitor Gix with him. The others were more than enough.

He didn't need this. The Inquisition may be needed at Zelnor Prime, but the navy should be in command. The arch-enemy would be present in strength here.

The system map was arrayed before him. A raging blue white star dominated the system, having already murdered two of its children and torn them into asteroid fields. A small scorched rock orbited near the spiteful and irregular bitch that was its mother. Zelnar Prime, a less than pleasant world with arable land and valuable mineral deposits, was bracket by the asteroid belt bodies of its siblings. Two gas giants drifted in the outer system and a ball of ice and rock completed this wretched excuse for a star system.

When they broke warp, they would have to fight the arch-enemy here. He hoped the inquisitors would be an asset. The fight was going to be hard enough without them being a hinderance.

Nathan strode through the ship looking at a dataslate he entered the ornate CIC of the ship and frowned. All in all the ship[ was soundly built its was the oenate splendor that irked Nathan to no end like the idiot designing the looks ofg the ship had nothing better to do than make it look like a cathedral.....that sort of thing must have incereased the build time severly.

He looked over at the captain and moved to the table to see the threat map of the system. He frowned and looked over at Captain Shanan.

The burly man shifted uncomfortably. "Three to six more hours, according to our navigator's estimates. Depending on the currents." He didn't mention the additional difficulties. Ships had been known to vanish in even calm currents. The Warp was not empty.

"Zelnor Prime is not without defences. Too many warp routes lie near or through it. Of course, being near to a hive world that is also a fleet base meant that reinforcements were always nearby. The arch-enemy would have to amass considerable strength to attack this system. How much they have left and if we can expect any aid from surviving defenders is unknown at the moment."

Prius kept his troops busy, drilling throughout most of the day and into the night. Small leisure breaks were allowed, but it was unofficial policy that such breaks were to be used for worthy tasks such as prayer to the Emperor. He had no idea why he'd been pulled away from the task of whipping the PDF into shape, but he went where he was sent and did what he was told to do. Obviously there was divine retribution in need of deliverance in this system, and he and the Emperor's Sword would be unrelenting in doing so.

Speaking with the ship's commissar and other commissars has been strangely uncommunicative. It was as if his presence somehow disturbed them. Perhaps they were lacking in proper zeal...

Black knew that stirring things up would assist, the subject lesson tonight was not directly linked to the cults, or the cults, or the hearasy. However his deprevity, and appities pleased the Slanneshii greatly, nightly he would step down from his high tower, and prowl the underhive, selecting children, which he would bring back to his "Special Place".

As he struck the subject with the agonizer on the lowest power setting, fraying nerves, he smashed the creature into the wall, with his own brute strength, his augmented hands bent the instirments of the filth's pleasure and pierced the subject's flesh anchoring him to the wall, lastly he brought out his surgical insterments. and healing foam, the surgery would just remove the sections of the brain that allowed for the perception of pleasure and pain. He did this before notifying the local arbites.

Colours flowed and bent as the Divine Retribution broke into real space surrounded by its escorts. Surveyors probed the surrounding space sending readings back to banks of cogitators and logic engines that processed the readings before sending it to multiple screens manned by tech adepts.

"Captain, readings show no sign of traitor ships nearby. We are nearly ten million kilometers from Zelnar III."

"Thank you Magos," said the Captain. The bulk of the huge gas giant was visible, a poisonous looking ball made of jade and cyan bands. "Focus the surveyors on the nearby moons. The arch-enemy may be using them as hiding spots. And get the inquisitors up here."

The decision on whether or not to contact the planet, possibly revealing their wherabouts to the arch-enemy was one that the inquisitors would need to be consulted on.

Shanan looked up from the system display. "Inquisitor, as you can see Task Force Sanctus is currently near Zelnar III. We are currently using the gas giant as cover from the rest of the system."

"Our problem is this. We can attempt to communicate with Zelnar II and learn about the current status of the system, but we reisk compromising our position. Or we can remain silent and attempt to find the enemy without revealing our position."
