Update: as far as my friend who set it all up is concerned, it's a bizarre problem that has nothing to do with the firewall- i.e. it must be outside the house.

Great, now I need to ring up the morons at Telstra Bigpond and explain to them that I want them to come out and fix the fucking thing, I will not go through their inane "clear all your cookies" bullshit, and I most certainly will not pay for them to do maintenance on their own damn property.

Oh there was no way it was your firewall, unless your ISP decided that it was time to make all network traffic should look like a DOS attack

So pretty much was my first instinct. Tell your supplier and make them fix it. annoying isn't it?

I know it's no help right now, but the first thing you should do whenever the connection is acting up, especially if it's all the way down, is pull the power plug on the modem (whether cable or a DSL modem) and let it sit for a few minutes. And it literally means pulling the plug out of the wall socket or the modem, not just turning it off. Sometimes the damn things get "stuck" and think some old expired IP address or otehr setting is still valid and they need to get zeroed (which won't happen unless the plug is pulled because they'll get just enough voltage to retain the fucked up settings).

If that doesn't help and you've checked the cables and maybe run the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew routine from command prompt, THEN call tech support. And if they try to act like retards, tell them to shut up, listen to what you have already done and then take it from there.

When they answer the phone, they will always assume the user can't find his own arse even with a map and instructions where computers are concerned. I work in such tech support, and 90% of the time that assumption is the correct one. Getting a caller who actually knows his shit is almost champagne time because it means not needing to draw everything in crayon.

....

So I wasn't home when the Bigpond guy was here. Apparently, he went outside and replaced something, even though he could find nothing wrong and that intermittent shit kept happening.

I made sure that my friend (the technician) rang up the guy and spoke to him while he was here.

I asked my Dad if it was fixed and he said yes it was.

I get home- same fucking shit is happening.

I just ran the IP address from the second bounce (10.140.224.1) through WHOIS and found something I thought was odd...

What the hell is that? The name sounds ominous.

There's an FAQ entry about the "blackhole" servers.

Yeah and half the porn sites I ever browse got torpedoed.

edit: Seriously though: a perfect illustration is just doing a random google image search, any term really, and I click on results as randomly as I can, and seriously around half "server not found." It doesn't take long to make up it's mind though: I click and that message comes up. :x

2nd edit: Now it wants to work. :?

Broader giant-internet-server related problem?

I mean the nature of the problem appeared to be
1) random
2) it didn't appear to even ATTEMPT to load a page, if the link wasn't gonna work, you click and it's no good

DOOD! I caught this shit too! See Venting for my tale of woe. I think it's Firefox's new security update to 2.0.0.1 but it happens on my other computer which is only at 1.0.7. It started today when somehow Google Desktop started running despite my seemingly having uninstalled it a week ago. Fucking weirdnicity!

Vympel: I know Telstra has been having some serious DNS problems of late, all my clients using Telstra Bigpond have been affected, whilst none of my clients using Internode or Chariot have had any problems.

Don't know if that is what was causing your problem though.

And I've just found out my other computer's having CPU overheats and both comps' browsers are getting spurious DNS errors because some dumb cunt installed Google Desktop without asking. I think it was the damn gangsta rednex who did it two weeks ago

And now Time Warner or my browser has taken to flushing the DNS cache every ten minutes or so, causing SD.N to dissolve into 'Cannot Find Server' at random.

Ah, correlation is not causation, but that correlation is what I see too; I updated to 2.0.0.1 earlier in the day yesterday, and only exhibited these hiches after that.

OTOH, flying in the face of that evidence, I updated my computer for IE7 and it fared no better at pulling up the websites FF failed to pull up too. (edit: fixed the grammar to be less cryptic  )

Okay, here's a question: of everyone that is having these problems, are we the only ones going to a large number of sites? What the fuck do we all have in common? I'm in KS, Aerius in Canada and Vympel in Australia. :wtf:

We obviously don't share the same ISP or probably web-browsing habits and all complain 'about half' our bookmarks / searches coming up negative.

OTOH, Gandalf has the same ISP as Vympel and he say's HE'S good [SDN Chat] but Einhander and Rogue 9 too have problems. :? :x :banghead:

None of us voted for Dubya? Our connection seems to be back to normal for the moment, let's hope it stays this way since with my sister and fiancé gone I have no idea how to fix the darn thing. I talked with my parents last night and my dad said his internet had gone kaput as well, they live about 40 minutes from us and they're not on the same ISP. He didn't vote for Dubya either.
