I've made some new yearstar images (and a 'blobs' theme just to test the theme selection code), here they are with the SD.net board styles:

Might need to take the black border off for the subSilver theme. I believe Acidburns is taking a look at making some SW-based yearstar themes.

Gold = 4 years, Silver = 1 year, Bronze = 3 months (except on the test server where 1 day = 3 months)

I'm not sure about the anti-necro. There are a few threads which can be legitimately revived. Stickies are the main culprit, but the fanfic recommendation thread sometimes gets usefully necroed as well. There may be others.

Personally, I think I'd prefer if they were kept as coloured little pointed stars, rather than made to be something else or changed into bigger blobby stars.

Sorry, forgot to mention, this feature doesn't apply to stickies and announcements.
but the fanfic recommendation thread sometimes gets usefully necroed as well.
I don't think it would be turned on for the fanfics forum. Really the only ones that need it are PST, PSW and STvSW (particular the later).

Well that can always stay as the default. Though I expect it would end up as a senate vote. I suppose if you really really must have it there could be a 'year stars : none, simple, full' option in the user settings page.

Hmm, perhaps yearstars should appear on the user profile page as well as the view topic page.

No no, I'm saying that I like the year star idea, but I'd prefer it if the pre-existing stars were simply recolourised rather than put in something new and ugly.

I don't have a problem with variety, as long as it's selectable or changeable in some way.

That said, I like the blobs the most, currently.

The themeable yearstars idea is from Balrog.

You could submit something non-ugly.
