Look, there's always going to be a small pool of characters for tourney-players simply based on small differences in speed and size, whether their moves involve crossing the screen and glitches too.

If people are looking for a SSB game where almost every character is so balanced that you almost every character is viable for big nerd-off tournaments, then you'd be looking at 20 near-clones. With no items. Final Destination.

"Tournament Play" will be the same as ever because tournament players will fit this square peg of a game into the round hole they so greatly desire so, yeah, only a few characters will happen to be the best at the blandest stage with an entire gameplay element ripped out of it.

For everyone else, it's 24 characters with a bunch of weird items on a load of crazy stages going crazy and so even the likes of Pichu from SSBM can win.

Actually - Pichu was 2nd tier; beating out even Pikachu for the position. The 'crappiest' SSBM characters tier-wise were ice climbers and ness, IIRC.

Hey, she's a girl in magic armor. Get it right.

A skilled Yoshi player can consistently get under 100% damage kills by throwing someone off, then forcing him down with the bicycle kick. You don't get Meteor Smash points for it, but it's effectively one. And Luigi is insane in the hands of a master.

As for Pichu, he's got a nasty learning curve, but his size and speed make actually landing hits on him a challenge at best. Add in the fact that people generally don't take Pichu seriously because of his curve, and a Pichu master can be nigh unstoppable.
