You roll to see how well you secured the lock. If the character rolled bad while the player may know the cuffs weren't put on right the character shouldn't. This is why if you did roll terrible you can't just say, let me try that again. As far as the character is concerned the cuffs are secured. The person in the cuffs, unless out cold, can do a opposing skill check against them and if he beats it gets the cuffs off. Now the cuffs could have a bonus etc. Stun cuffs stun you if you try to get out of them and fail.
PeZook wrote:Why would you even care to explain? "You have no idea" is a perfectly reasonable explanation, since if the PC fucked up the action, he won't immediately know what went wrong, either.
I've tried that. It lead to the example.

Then tell him to fuck off, as he's demanding OOC knowledge which his character couldn't know. "You failed your roll, your character has no idea what happened, you can roll to try to figure it out" should be an acceptable response, and if the player is being a bitch about it, then maybe you should just dump the grot.

Have a very nice da.

Toss him the fuck out of the group. I've had players like this in the past and I simply will no longer put up with it. I'll warn them once, then a second time and the third time they do it, out the door they go and don't come back.

Again, what roll and skill is needed, what rule set? Cause... I don't know of any SW game ruleset that makes you roll to close handcuffs.

No, you got into an argument. When the player asked "How did he get out?!", the appropriate response should have been "You have no idea. As far as you're concerned, the cuffs were secure."

Then perhaps let him roll to figure it out.

It's not that "He picked them" is a bad response, really, it's that you shouldn't get into this kind of asinine argument with a player after he failed a skill check. If the player is an accomplished hacker, and his PC failed a hacking skill check, are you going to argue with the player why his PC wasn't able to subvert the corporate mainframe system?

Have the dealer buy it back but charge the PC for 'wear and tear', 'depreciation', 'lost business', 'the bit you broke', 'cleaning', 'rental', 'recharging' and anything else you can slap on. When the PC complains, have the heavy fire a warning shot and then charge for 'recharge of blaster', 'blast mark cleaning', 'thug hire rates' and 'noise control fine'.

How is this a DM issue anyway? If he's an idiot making mistakes and expecting the game to change to suit him, too fucking bad. The solution to most 'DM situations' is just 'get rid of shit players'. The idea of contorting to suit someone who's annoying and stupid is absurd; by the same token, there's no reason to go out of your way to punish people for poor decisions.

That said, I'd never play with someone like you describe under any circumstances.

Isn't that the $64,000 question. How do you do that when all the ones that fit you know have moved out of town?

If you can't walk away because you're an addict this will always happen to you.

That said, the OP makes it sound like this could simply have been ignored. You should eject bad players, but 'stupid' doesn't mean 'bad'. If he bought a dumb thing who cares; the way you gloated and asked the fucking Internet for how to handle his reaction is stupid. The situation could simply have been glossed over and ignored as irrelevant, which it pretty much is. His other conduct is bad, but 'was in a hurry and didn't read equip list' doesn't ruin a group.

If it's the kind of constant whiner who makes a scene every time shit doesn't go his way, it's not worth the trouble keeping him around. And it sure sounds like he's one.

You can't deal with those types at all. The only thing I've found out works is to just go "Because I say so" since it doesn't matter what you try, they will whine anyway.
