The guys who read my stuff universally clamor for more, and tell me that were I to produce original works of as high quality as the fanfics I write, I'd have publishable material better than most of what's out there. Such praise is cheap, but the $300 check the one guy sent me certainly wasn't! (Fucking floored me when I got it, let me tell you.)
You've never read my stuff, so you have no fucking status to pass judgement on it.
This is the funniest post ever.
RogueIce, I imagine the real problem is the way Wikia controls content and is simply trying to make more money from ads. Several wikis have left in the last few years, and it seems likely many more will do so. The best part is WIkia keeps zombie versions of wikis that leave live.
Perhaps someone should make a browser plugin/dedicated program that lets you read wikia content in a formatting of your choice. Why bother restricting oneself to shit aesthetic choices of the wiki editors? User interface is something people will never agree about 100 percent. So why not make a dedicated wiki reader program that lets the user choose skins, layout, colors etc ?
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Some wikis actually have very worthwhile skins - or at least skins which are wholly thematic, quite well designed and surprisingly useful.
WoWWiki did, and the Avatar one did as well. Dead Space Wiki, too... Wookiepedia, of course, though it was a lot more subdued.

I was speaking in general terms. This is a problem not restricted to wikis only. You have many sites where the text and pictures are interesting but the presentation is horrible.

You're right, but Stark's point wasn't that the horrible presentation being delivered is that way because the people maintaining the content are crap at developing the presentation. In fact, in most of the wikia sites, presentation was damn good and fused excellently with the content - and then the assholes who own wikia go and force their new and unquestionably shit presentation skin on everyone, fucking up everybody's sites and hijacking their content when they sod off to go and rebuild their stuff someplace that's not utterly wrecked.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

I've been following this on the fallout wiki which has become a huge pain to navigate since the re-skin. The fallout wiki had a large number of custom templates with infoboxes and other features and it was generally quite well organized but the re-skin has thoroughly broken some pages and the community is rather unhappy. With all of the content being generated with New Vegas and 2.5 million users in one week, this was not a good time for the fallout wiki.
There has been a lot of grumbling about moving the wiki and many editors have publicly left but the wiki is unlikely to move since the head admin guy is allegedly employed by Wikia and the high profile users have come out against any move since it may cost the admin his job.
The re-skin really looks like a cheap blog but some of the features are really useless. Do we really need a random sampling of images, links to other Wikia wikis and a list of recently changed pages taking a significant portion of the right side of the page? Before the re- skin ads used to rather unobtrusive but now you have banner ads at the top and bottom of the page as well as large ads on the right side. Similarly, before the re-skin there were links to other Wikia wikis but they were buried on the left side of the page below the now non-existing navigation menu.
To make things worse, Wikia staff appear to have been quite unhelpful and all negative feedback on both individual wikis and on their support pages seems to have been ignored. On top of that the deployment of the new skin has been inconsistent. First they allowed registered users to choose the new skin for couple of weeks while guests saw the old skin then they deployed the new skin on guests but allowed the registered users to choose the old skin in their preferences for a few days. Then they killed the original skin for the registered users but allowed them to choose another skin which was less bad than the new one for a few more days and next week they will kill any choice to use a different skin on the wikis.
One exemption to this whole mess is that Uncyclopedia is unaffected so far.

The empty left margin is really annoying. What's the point of all that blank space, anyway? I've never understood websites that do this. All that junk in the right margin is annoying, but it's a free service so you kind of expect them to take up space for their advertising. I could live with that. But why waste all of that space over on the left? It doesn't make sense, and just crunches up pages even worse than they would be before. And apparently it doesn't even matter what your resolution is, as the "useful space" won't change; you just get bigger empty margins from what little I've read on it.

It's a wonder anyone uses that piece of shit service anymore. Open up just a few tabs of wikia pages and watch your computer come to a crashing halt as all the extraneous shit overloads your browser and eats up all of the fucking available memory.

I deeply apologize for the Necro, and will accept the jeers and insults directed at me for it. However, I do have something relevant to add. The Star Fleet Universe - http://www.starfleetgames.com is finding their copywritten content stolen and added to Wikia, despite multiple complaints and requests to have their property removed. (Link to Post in question.)
However, in offering some advice, I came back to this thread to get the page for the Complaint Wiki to give to ADB, but found that it was no longer online. Can any of you tell me where it went, or if it was shut down? Google can find the page, but attempts to access it tell me that it doesn't exist.

JonB, when we have similar copyright issues regarding theft of material from Bulbapedia, our point of contact has been Wikia staff member (and apparent #2) Sannse. Try shooting her a line. If she refuses to do anything, then you're pretty much up shit creek without a paddle without getting lawyers involved.

Thank you. I've passed along your information to the people in charge over at ADB.
