We going to have a barely-competent convoy commodore by the name of Ned Seagoon?

Man, everyone just loves playing with my character, don't they? He's been hijacked at least three times so far.

It's all right, if only karma for all the hijacking I did in BARIS. And hey, it's funny, which is what matters.

I think he's actually swedish. Although he could be Norwegian or Danish with a grudge.

Re: Das Thanasboot ooc/information/questions
When we are all killed - may I recommend ensuring it is as a result of koch. Then revealing that in fact the whole mission was a simulation played on a computer by some weird eastern european dude and koch was a bit of erroneous code that caused the simulation to be unwinnable. Like an unintentional Kobayashi Maru.

If we go that route, then I'm going to be working with PeZook a lot then to make it funny.

Well, right now you have three angry escorts pouding you with depth charges and an airplane circling above just waiting for you to grow weary, with the second convoy straight ahead. I will have to finish running the thing tomorrow

Re: Das Thanasboot ooc/information/questions
I really need to get GWX if it'll solve my problem of having to use three torpedoes to sink a C2. Enormously frustrating when I'm in the Type IIA and I've only got five in all. I hit one under the keel, just under the forecastle, and the bastard just steamed merrily away, laughing, because I had no torpedoes left. Gotta free up some hard drive space, though...

Re: Das Thanasboot ooc/information/questions
Well that is a relief. I was wondering if we would have to restart or not. Though it is looking like we are going to die anyway...oh well, at least the Kommandant didn't kill me for the miss. Now then...we need to work up a system for the next convoy, assuming a depth charge doesn't hit us...I obviously can't actually calc the speed (sucks to be me...) or the angle, but the rest of it I can delve into my random history knowledge for (like the depth). Also, if you do update tomorrow, I won't be able to reply until Saturday (don't have internet again until then).

Re: Das Thanasboot ooc/information/questions
No direct hits so far. Frankly, it's pretty easy to avoid depth charges at 200 metres ; But if you want to attack, you'll have to come up.Chardok wrote:That WAS exciting, PeZook!

Or the escorts will finally get their shit together and just splatter the area in a line abreast formation and you'll be dead

Re: Das Thanasboot ooc/information/questions
Ahh, but what if we reverse screws and back up TOWARDS the escorts under silent running? THEY'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING!
Or.....what if we get directly under a merchantman and stay there until the escorts lose interest, then dead stop, let them pass over us, then come up and then fire a torp straight up their....
you know...screw.
GOOD LUCK MATCHING THE ZIG!

Re: Das Thanasboot ooc/information/questions
The C2s don't respond very well to under the keel detonations ; I find it best to hit them right in front of the forecastle, using an impact fuse set to about 7 metres or so. Alternatively, fire a spread of two torpedoes.Scottish Ninja wrote:I really need to get GWX if it'll solve my problem of having to use three torpedoes to sink a C2. ...or pick a flotilla which gives you a Type VII
GWX will add complications and solutions. One solution is that there will be A LOT of extra merchantmen types, many of which will be easier to sink than the infernal C2 ; one problem is that it ruthlessly simulates magnetic fuze and depth-keeping problems of German torpedoes
Two destroyers are pounding you with depth charges while the third hangs out behind and tracks you with ASDIC ; This won't work, they'll just make a slightly bigger circle.Chardok wrote:Ahh, but what if we reverse screws and back up TOWARDS the escorts under silent running? One thing working in your favor is that the two attackers are constantly getting in each other's way, which means they're not dropping as many charges as quickly as they could.
Attacking destroyers at low AOBs is asking for a missChardok wrote: Or.....what if we get directly under a merchantman and stay there until the escorts lose interest, then dead stop, let them pass over us, then come up and then fire a torp straight up their....
I did do such tricks with the Type XXI, which can effortlessly keep up with merchantmen ; The Type VII, though, has to maintain full speed to match a slow convoy while underwater.
Getting below the merchants is a good tactic insofar as it forces the escorts to maneuver around the merchants ; It won't help you to attack, as the low ranges and high transient speeds will complicate firing solutions, but it's a great way to get away from the escorts and just...disappear after an attack.

I have just finished the first SIX HOURS of the depth charging. It's still going on, so the update may be slow in the coming
