Odd, I found Homeworld more easy than Cataclysm, mainly due to the limitation in unit number, the low capital ships of the Somtaww (Multibeam and Drone Frigates), and the Beast cruise missiles.God Emperor wrote:I beat it, wasn't as defficult has the original.theheap wrote:Did anyone ever beat Catalyst (sp) I never got a chance to beat it per my game disk got scratched. That is, until one gets to salvage something worthwhile, or build destroyers and dreadnoughts.
It is easier to gather resources, but the unit number limitation is a welcome addition, requiring more attention to fleet management.

I captured a fuel pod by accident in one of the nebula missions thinking it was a Multi-beam frigate. Hated that, however it did give me 300 RUs, and I found ou that collectors can actually harvest them. (Don't know how much it got from it)

The game scales depending on your current fleet size, so you'd need a rather nicely-sized fleet to do that. I only got 6 multi Beams, but I use them best I can. What really pissed me off is that I lost all my Resource gathering units to Radiation in the last mission. But I didn't lose any ships, besides two fighters, in the mission of rescuing the Bentusi, and did get an Ion Cannon Frigate.phongn wrote:The game scales depending on your current fleet size, so you'd need a rather nicely-sized fleet to do that. Its been awhile, but in the end you have to destroy some supper weapon the beast infect, you incounter the whole taiidan empire, you have to destroy the beast mothership or something can't remeber the name, but you do get some help from the bentusi, and the end video is pretty good.

Let's see. The next-to-last mission is tracking down the Clee-San, your little science vessel. After battling a big-ass armada with it, you blast it one with your Siege Cannon.. Disabling it. A worker docks with it, allowing your team to make it send a 'distress' call. Then it gets nasty.
The Beast Mothership, the other half of your ship, shows up with it's 'children'. Epic battle. Siege Cannon is free to engage. Dreadnoughts fight Cruisers. Acolytes dive through a Shield to use missiles.
Once you finally do it in the Mothership, it's time to end this party. You make best speed for the Taidanni Republic's main shipyards, where they've been making a sphere-shaped battlestation with super-powerful ion-beams(Sound familiar?). When you get there, it's been infected, and has decimated the defenders.
In order to attack the battlestation, you have to blast apart a Proximity Sensor net so it doesn't see you coming, and then take out it's satellites. Why? Because they emit an incredible Repulsor field that'll smash any fleet trying to get close. Small ships can get close, so Leeches are most often used to destroy it.
With them gone, a few Siege Cannon shots will finish the battlestation. Now it's just you and the Naggarok, the Original Beast.. Or is it?
An Imperial Fleet jumps in on one side, and a Beast Fleet on the other. Wise use of a nearby Crystal field can remove the Beast Fleet, but the Imperial fleet keeps coming.
When the hour looks darkest, the Bentusi grow some balls and show up. They can't stay(Everything indicates the Beast is, in fact, telepathic.), but grant you the plans to their super-acolyte, which you may remember. It makes fighting the Imperial fleet easy.. Except that as soon as the Bentusi show, the Imperials tell the Beast to fuck off! Seems they were promised that battlestation you blew up.
After this, it's old school. The Naggarok is much, much faster than any other ship, thanks to a drive that ignores acceleration and inertia. A research team studying it will reveal it can be stopped by an EMP pulse from a large group of Acolytes. While it's possible to beat it without this, it's the way that grants two extra speech thingies: Fleet Intel telling you to blast the Beast, and the Beast, high and mighty god, begging for it's life.
With the killing blow dealt, you are heros. Badabing.

On the mission where you have to rescue the bentusi....you can clean house with just salvage corvettes....Your fleet (I had over 30 ships in mine at this point) should be set to take down the missle destroyer and any other assasult frigates...they will be the main threat to your salvaging plans...once they're gone...the ion cannon frigates, the destroyer and even the heavy cruiser are all yours basically...watch out for that heavy cruiser though...it's a bitch of a ship...and packs a hella punchStraha wrote:I only got 6 multi Beams, but I use them best I can. I failed to capture anything on that one, by that time, my fleet consisted of 18 multibeams, 36 fuel pods, about 10 ion cannon frigates, 4 destroyers, 2 missile destroyers, the stolen carrier from mission 5, 4 assault frigates, 2 drone frigates, the heavy cruiser from the station supernova mission and the 6 ion array frigates from mission 3.
I didnt have a chance to move in with the salvage corvettes, the ones I did move in got cut to pieces, and I didnt have time to send the next ones in as my fleet moved into range and took the enemy apart in a matter of seconds.
Basically, at that point, it gets a little easy. Especially when you steal 70% of the Ion Frigates from the inhibitor mission. Hmmm...

'Course it'd get easy if you had the turanic raider carrier...that's just cheap...and there's not that many ion frigates that can turn the game into a cakewalk...that mission with the supernova can turn your fleet into scrap if you make one small misclick...

Not the turanic carrier (thats cheating...), the taidan carrier from mission 5, I bagged it instead of the destroyers, they tended to cut up my salvage corvettes because I didnt have the fighter resources to defend them properly.
The supernova mission is easy provided you can break your fleet into a long chain rather than a massive group, so provided you go down the right, you may lose 1 or 2 fuel pods and a couple others when you blow up the station itself - but you can leave them there once its dead and harvest the far-off resource pockets - its not too tricky, and the hulls on most ships give you plenty of warning before you lose a ship. And the hulls are restored by the next mission anyway.
And really, you only need about 20 - 30 of the Ion array frigates from the inhibitor, its just to defend in the last mission and take out the headshot as quick as possible, I was just going for an encore and stole about 90. But had to transfer to my parents computer as at the time, my computer couldnt cope with that many ships on screen.
EDIT: and rather handily, if you bag the heavy cruiser and two destroyers, you can actually ignore the salvage corvettes on their way back, as they actually manage to follow the dust cloud path, so you can usually run off with the heavy capital ships. If you keep the carrier with you as you go down the dust cloud, you could get a couple of frigates, but I never bother, the risk of losing the corvettes is too great in the radiation field.

Ahh...the carriers are possible to capture?..I always thought they needed more salvage corvettes than they had ports...but oh well..I just went with the firepowerThe_Lumberjack wrote:Not the turanic carrier (thats cheating...), the taidan carrier from mission 5, I bagged it instead of the destroyers, they tended to cut up my salvage corvettes because I didnt have the fighter resources to defend them properly.
If your prepared to add like an extra five minutes onto what is already a bloody long mission, there's a way you can get round doing a frontal assasult, which they are expecting and hit the science station before they can even scramble....the dust veins lead all the way around the installation you see....it's possible to sneak around and hit them from the back.. while sending a small but capable attack head on....pincer movements are a bitch. The carrier there doesn't stand a chance with twenty focused ion beams on it's engines...
Oh hell yeah. There's strength in numbers...got a good fleet of 30...mostly heavy destroyers and the like...the small ships (ie, frigates) I just destroy now...can't be bothered with 'emAnd really, you only need about 20 - 30 of the Ion array frigates from the inhibitor, its just to defend in the last mission and take out the headshot as quick as possible, I was just going for an encore and stole about 90. The Turanic is uncapturable, it has 99 salvage ports and only 5 points or something, and that goes for all the mothership classes, everything else is fair game ('cept the junkyard dog - can you steal the autoguns? is it worth it? I've never tried...).
Hah, who needs pincer movements when you have pure firepower, but I do go further down the route than is necessary, mainly to catch the carrier as it runs to hyperspace, it wanders straight into my multibeam posse. Over 40 ion beams into one ship. Doesnt last very long.
I mean, with that many ships available, hundreds if you're a successful pirate (I'm only quasi successful :p), I was hoping for a tougher time in mission 16, more of a massive engagement with defense platforms and heavy cruisers and all, it all ended up being an anticlimax really, by the time my entire fleet arrived at the enemy MS, the traitors had already got it down to low health - I wanted to get a screeny of about 200 ion beams hitting the enemy MS, but it died as soon as the first volley from my destroyers hit.

Eh, I meant the other carrier...the enemy one...the proper enemy...not the pirates...The sentry guns were chewing apart cap ships....if you've the patience to redeploy them in later missions...I'm sure you could...it doesn't say you -can't- capture them anyway...The_Lumberjack wrote:The Turanic is uncapturable, it has 99 salvage ports and only 5 points or something, and that goes for all the mothership classes, everything else is fair game ('cept the junkyard dog - can you steal the autoguns? is it worth it? The best of both worlds...I don't like losing anything whatsoever...not even frigates or fighters....am a firm believer in 'if we all go, we all come back' to quote kirk....I don't like to lose.Hah, who needs pincer movements when you have pure firepower, but I do go further down the route than is necessary, mainly to catch the carrier as it runs to hyperspace, it wanders straight into my multibeam posse. Damn it sucks to be the emperor at that point...that many ion beams are hella powerful though....I doubt they could amass anything that could stand against that kind of firepower

What you need to do is basically sacrifice cheap fighters like scouts first to draw the heavier ship's fire before you move any sc's in to take ships over...they get torn a new one otherwise...and that's not so good...FaxModem1 wrote:I'm trying to build up my fleet by capturing ememy vessels, I can capture quite a few Ion Array ships in level 4, but how do you capture ships in level 5, do you send a lot of Salvage corvettes at their fleet or do you wait for them to come to you or what?
Try and draw their fire with the heaviest ship you have....failing that...send your fleet away immediatly to engage the starting patrol of three assault frigates and three ion frigates they send out...when you've taken them...deploy the scout to destract the task force they'll send against your fleet..It MUST be on Evasive...and you must keep it on the run...meanwhile you can feel free to destroy...or salvage their carrier and the support frigates...you can deal with the destroyers chasing the scout when you feel up to it

I've just done that level again.
Send your frigates kinda half-way towards the enemy, and put your salvage corvettes quite a way above them (I find using repair corvettes to heal them helps too). I sent my scouts way forward and right, and then charged them across just in front of the enemy fleet. If you do it right you can lure half of them off while the others head towards your mothership. Don't try and steal everything, try destroying one or two from each group and grabbing the rest. Use fighters and corvettes to kill their fighters and scouts or interceptors on evasive to distract their cap ships.

A quick question myself concerning Homeworld (which I just got yesterday): is there any real difference at all between the original release and the GOTY edition?
