And I would assume that magic would be limited to stuff that improves upon tech? Like spells that increase the explosivness of gunpower, or the accuracy of guns?

The latter, note my mention of creating a map.

A Byzantium that never fell but rather developed into a limited Monarchy (a la Britain 1660) ought to be fun :D

Smartass alert. Damn the verbal barbs, full speed ahead!
Yes there will be some limits on that sort of thing. Mass conscription for example might be allowed if your country became hard pressed in a massive war, but your not going to start out with it.
Cool, cool. You have to wait for the game history to toss levee en mass onto your lap--it can't just happen :)

There could be individuals who could do such things and your military might have a few around to provide special poweder for a seige, but you're not going to be universally issuing magical equipment. Consider magic to be very limited in scope with capabilities limited to improving technology and one off things. If a mage turned a mule into a stallion for a prince thats fine, just don't go and have him do it 5000 times for an army. Even an occasional change to the wind might be okay. But everything in moderation.

I will tell you if you and anyone else if its becoming excessive.

Hmmm. Would I be wrong to assume then, SS, that there will be some incidence of 'heroic' characters, though it will be limited to an Odysseus or Jason (exceptional men, not superhuman like Hercules)?

Invisibility...maybe for a short period, an hour or so. A much more accurate gun is fine, heck you can explain that away by simply having the character build a rifled weapon, assuming we start out very early which is seeming quite likely.

Such would be fine, they add flavor without changing the games basis, which is and shall remain technological.

Ignore this post, new proposal is on page 3

So far half the votes have been for 1660-1805 and several more people have ranked that as being there second choice. The Duchess has proposed 1660-1685 as the range within that at which we would start. Many have supported that idea as well.

Edit: I missread what she posted, I dont think the Duchess was acutally suggesting that period but people did think it sounded good. Ignore what I've written below.

So the question is who would like to use that date and who would not want to participate if that was the choice. For people who would not, please indicate if any time later within the 1660-1805 range would be acceptable. I'd like to have a large number of players for this thing.

I would go with 1650.... But any time in that range works for me. So long as I get my happy ships, and bayoneted musket armed troops

Keep in mind this is a new world that does not have the historical countries in it. You can however adapt as much as you want from historic Japan to create your own nation, even call it the same thing.

Personally, I would prefer to start in the late 1700s at the earliest. However, I'll go with just about anything as this is sounding pretty damned interesting.

EDIT: Cossacks... mmm...

EDIT2: Fixed odd misstype I missed.
