Romero made Valve his bitch
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

If it's the full source code, someone can compile it and release the game--full version--in pirated glory.
No, because the other things like the models, textures and levels are not included in the source.
So? The pirates will just rip the data files off of a CD or whatever.

Yeah, but then they'd rip the binary at the same time. Anyway, the piracy angle is not the interesting one, because there is no way in hell that the current version (which is already weeks old) and the release version will be compatible, and its unlikely that the art of the game can be nicked in one go like the source code could.

Also, I'm betting that as the story unfolds, the source will be incomplete. Surely how ever the source came to fall in enemy hands, they couldn't get every little library and component.

Actually, I've been hearing that it may well be the complete source - it's something like 170MB uncompressed.

Ouch. Yeah, I swung by just now to get the updates, and it sounds like they grabbed data right out of there version control system. That is Bad. I imagine they'll still sell a fuck-ton of their game, and still license the wazoo out of it. This will be a good test to see whether open source improves competition, even though Valve are unwilling guinea pigs.

Same thing happened with the original Quake back in the day. Nothing really came of it, except that we got a pretty good OS/2 port long before Id officially open-sourced their code.

Oh, one thing I was going to mention but forgot... the Havok engine is LGPL. In other words, its source code is already public, so I don't think Valve will lose face for that.

Wait, Havok is LGPL? Heh, I thought that it was a commercial project.

Actually something similar DID happen with Falcon 4.0, and if I remember correctly, the mod community was able to tinker with the engine and improve the game in ways that buggered the imagination. Not entirely sure of the exact details, but at least it shows that it is POSSIBLE that some good will come of this.

I am only going to use a hacker-made variant of HL2....I'll buy the game
to get the textures, but I am NOT installing that retarded spy-ware infested
copy of HL2 with Steam....just the haXored copy of it with no Steam at all.

See? Hacking is good :P

This would be a good time to say that if you know something about this, or find something out, USE the helpvalve@valvesoftware.com addy they set up. Crime shall not go unpunished, and all that.

Yeah right. They tried to shove that Steam crap down our throats. They
can go fuck themselves.

It's more of a case of saying that I would happily tread on the throats of thieves like that. It doesn't matter whether they ever pissed anyone off in the past or not - I personally really LIKE Half Life, and many other games, and although I am very laissez-faire on most issues, someone who threatens to directly ruin my fun had best resign himself to an asswhipping.

Hmmm...okay, but how about the fact that Gabe and co. seem to be fucking the consumer in the ass for business reasons. Don't believe me? You really should read this:

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11923

This is all part of a larger puzzle involving a distribution deal for hl2 with ATI. Up until now, I was willing to give Valve the benefit of the doubt until all the facts were in, but this is almost a smoking gun. ATI has been working with Valve to create a coup in the benchmark scores. Wow, what a great company Valve is huh? Creating the illusion that all nVidia cards are crap right?

Fuck Gabe Newell and fuck Valve for doing this duplicious shit. They all deserve to burn in hell along with their source code.

Do you even know what you are talking about?
Both ATI and nVidia have worked very closely with Valve, they both had something to do with the coding. They even went as far as creating different versions of the rendering process just to help nVidia's cards with little success. nVidia's DirectX9 performance tends to be crappy when compared to ATI's no matter the benchmark used.

Valve's final choice of partnering with ATI for the launch is no secret, either.
