Well, it seems that an actual vanilla Steam installation doesn't exist
I've not seen anything other than Steam installation + cache for whatever mod
I don't want to download some POS Richochet or install over CS or TFC just to reinstall Steam
Can't you do a file search for STEAM.DLL ?
I knew where the .dll is :?

Oh fuck YES. Guess which one I'm getting in 2004? The Buggy spyware laden

or the OpenGL program that does NOT have spyware isntalled?

I don't really consider Steam to be spyware. As for patches, Valve had better figure out how to push updates without updating massive sections of the game.

Dude Shep, at least get the facts straight before mouthing off like that. If you already have the game installed, the patches (which are automatic) are just a couple megs, maybe upwards of 50 if you haven't played for 6 months. The 700mb files are complete Steam downloads WITH game attached. This is for people who refuse to have Steam work with the old downloads and thus they have to make a new standalone download. Furthermore Steam isn't spyware.

Reinstalled Steam completely and can't play due to floating point errors

Valve, where the fuck were you during the beta test?

The only places to get help, the official Steam forums, are nothing but PR, with very few fixes provided for minor problems only

The stuff that prevents people from even loading up hasn't been fixed, and they're taking their sweet time getting to it

Tell Hamel and others who have to download 700 fucking megs that they're
hallucinating, and that these patches should only be a few megs at least

Unfortantely for them (as well as myself) they represent a minority of the people using Steam. While more prone to problems then it should be, Steam IS working the vast majority of the time. The biggest problems behind Steam occured when they tried moving everyone on to it in a two week span. That overloaded the servers. Now that most people are on Steam those problems are starting to go away. My original problem even went away and I could have gotten Steam up and running without making a large download. As for Hamel, he's currently SOL. It DOES happen. For some damned reason I can't play Max Payne on my computer, but I don't blame Rockstar for that.

They could try to use binary xdelta-like patches instead of distributing whole new binaries. Should shave off about 10-25% off of compressed stuff (tested deltaing 2 different versions of bash *.debs, and 50 off of uncompressed binaries (2 versions of the bash executable). Then pack these into an executable that will do this automatically. Obviously will not work if you want cumulative patches.

That method of patching has long fallen out of favor with game publishers.

Why? People too stupid to figure out which patch goes with which version or something leading to tech support costs?

Well, for gamers it doesn't matter, since most have broadband, but what about other software like MS service packs and such? Or do they do that with the net install?

Probably, and those patches didn't always work for some reason or another.

Net install just detects what needs to be updated and installs the relevant files (as well as 'futureproofing' your install so that you don't need to reapply the SP after you add things to Windows, like how NT4 required).

To be fair, the 723MB version of Steam is the one with all of the game caches. Then again, if you play more than a couple of mods, then it's about the only solution right now.

http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=getsteamnow
Full Steam Installer (includes caches for all games): (723.4 MB)
Counter-Strike Steam Installer: (379.4 MB)
Half-Life Steam Installer: (211.6 MB)
Opposing Force Steam Installer: (289.8 MB)
Day of Defeat Steam Installer: (396.2 MB)
Team Fortress Classic Steam Installer: (272.3 MB)
Deathmatch Classic Steam Installer: (23.7 MB)
Ricochet Steam Installer: (15.5 MB)

I dled the full installer, but I have Cable, so I didn't mind. After getting used to some of the changes, I don't mind Steam at all. In fact, it has a lot of improvements over the old HL frontend, such as allowing you to Alt+Tab to Windows and back w/o losing sound and going crazy, the way it used to.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

The problem is that Valve is not offering Steam by itself
You are forced into downloading at least 1 cache
