I like Civ 3 but like Civ 2 over it for one reason.
In Civ 3 there is a good chance that my Modern Armor will still lose a fight when fighting a Spearman. Also multiple times has a Trireme (sp?) sunk a Battleship. Last time I checked things 5-10 times your size that can simply go straight through you don't get hurt that much by you.
The comabt system in Civ3 is simply horribly broken.
The Chinese are *so* fucked

very....
subs loosing an indirect fire duel to a galleon.... (which means torps and underwater firing on attack)
tanks loosing to spearmen
battleships loosing to tririemes
those damn greeks holding out against any assult force unless it is equiped with a rapid attack shoot force. (troops come in two or three varieties....)
stealthfighters loosing air superiority to turboprop fighters....

I've always looked at it like this:
Things change, warrior, which I still call militia don't have to be a ragtag group of guys with axes. It could be a ragtag group of hicks with rifles and trucks, you know? The spearmen might have turned in their spears a long time ago for bullet proof shields and a grenade launcher of sorts. Sure it's not very efficient; but if you have a unit of them fortified up in a city of millions, on a hill, they'd certainly have a chance, they have the advantage.
The basic rule of modernization is that every unit just turns into this sort of crappy, modern version, mostly appearing similar to a sort of local militia group.
It's not a very good explanation, but it works for me. Sure I get angry when that stuff happens, but those are the breaks.

In Civ 2, units have different hit points and firepower while they don't in Civ3, only attack and defense points. (which makes little sense anyway)
In anycase, I like Civ2 better than 3 since one can actually tech up and be fearless of whimpy units. My bomber swarm managed to decimate the glorious Russian and British empires in conjuction with paratroopers. (The damned french required lots of nukes as they nuked my 2nd city, which ironically had build the mahatten project....the resulting pollution of the war resulting in -300 points + global warming, badly hurting my score) Cant do that I Civ3 when my modern armor dies to rifleman and bombers are limited to bombardment.
As for this game I was playing this afternoon, ph34r the p0w3r of Japanese Republican diplomats....muhahahahahahahahahaha NOTHING, NOTHING CAN STAND IN MY WAY MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
It is silly how wealthy republics/democracies can petty much buy an whole empire, especially if one only buys cities (much cheaper than units consider they usually hose lots inside) and take the enemy palace. With an tech advantage and careful pillaging of rail (which works in enemy lands, unlike civ 3) means nothing can stand in my way muhahahahaha. (except damned democracies of course)
Of course, in the game before that my nuclear salvo manage to take 90% of chinese cities in 2 turns is my way of dealing with evil democracies....
I just wish they made an Civ with the good SMAC features.... Planetblaster and sinking enemies under water included of course....

It would make FAR more sense if the defender can aquire new technologies easier and upgrade them rather than having vet. warriors on an mountain fortress defeating rifleman.....InnocentBystander wrote:I've always looked at it like this:
