TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, Dark Forces, Force Commander (would probably end up being better than the game), and Jedi Knight. Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Total Annihilation. Command and Conquer Red Alert. Starcraft. Rainbow Six. Army Men. Interstate 76.

Eh, I don't think so. Cameron doing a Metal Gear just gives me a bad vibe, because I don't think his style of filmmaking would work in the best way with the material.BlkbrryTheGreat wrote:James Cameron.Agent Fisher wrote:but who could do it right?Darth_Zod wrote:Metal Gear is begging for movie-dom.
Right now I don't think I can name a director, but I agree that David Mamet would work great as a screenwriter, although collaberating with another might work even better.
What would work best for a Metal Gear film I think would be to keep the scale small. If you go too far, you'll just end up with yet another big action effects conspiracy/spy movie, because that's exactly what everyone expects. Focus less on Metal Gear and huge action/fight sequences and more on Solid Snake, the radio conversations, and the espionage/infiltration aspects. The games' best dramatic feature was how they generated tension and those "what's around the corner" and "they're getting closer" feelings of paranoia. Only really late in the film should Metal Gear even be an immediate concern, since the film should be an espionage suspence drama instead of a spy action movie.
Personally, I think a Metal Gear film would have been best made about 20 years ago, from a general filmmaking perspective. And while I would personally avoid any big names or stars on both the cast and crew fronts (not just for MG or any video game movie, but for most films in general), I think casting someone like Kurt Russel circa 1985 would be best for Snake.
I believe in a sign of Zeta.

I think he would make a great Big Boss.I think casting someone like Kurt Russel circa 1985 would be best for Snake.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Duh.
Bickleberry: That's actually the sort of casting I'm talking about avoiding. An actor like that, in a role like that, would be dramatically self-defeating. All it would get you is audience members going "Look, that's Kurt Russel! Kurt Russel is playing Big Boss! Wow, Big Boss is Kurt Russel."

Why not? The plot is good. It could be about the moral implications of the "mind patterning" thing or whatever it was called; transferring the human mind into a machine. It could show both sides believing their cause is just and right. The Arm believe that it is wrong to transfer their consciousness into machines. The Core believe that they are saving humanity from death and bringing it into immortality by placing their consciousness into machines. The final battle could be between the Arm and Core commanders. The plot could be based loosely around the game. Why wouldn't it work?Captain_Cyran wrote:What? Great game I will say. But good movie material it is not.

Have you seen Spartan yet? I always knew Mamet was a great screenwriter, but I never realized he was such a capable director until I saw that movie. Even his action scenes were superbly handled being tight without a lot of flare with a big emphasis on tension.Spanky The Dolphin wrote: Right now I don't think I can name a director, but I agree that David Mamet would work great as a screenwriter, although collaberating with another might work even better.
I completely agree that this would be the best approach for such a movie (which is why the screenwriter would be extremely important). What's more, this isn't the sort of movie that many people have the balls to make in today's world of $150 million blockbusters, but it certainly could be done and done well. What would work best for a Metal Gear film I think would be to keep the scale small. Starcraft
One of the best single player campaigns in any game. It could be made into a series of 6 movies each covering the individual game campaigns.
Mechwarrior
The Battletech universe is one of the most detailed and best universes out there with over a thousand years of history. A movie could focus on the succession wars, the clan invasion or the Fedcom civil war.
Interstate 76
The cutscenes looked cool(even though low quality graphics) and the game story was great. It could be made into a decent movie.

how bout....
A Grand theft Auto movie...
It would feature Paul Walker or Keanu Reeves as the character in the game, it would give a back story on the character and would chronicle his rise from petty street thug to big boss. He would work for the different bosses and the enemies would be the triads, mafia, the cartel and the FBI.

I've always thought Jedi Knight would make an excellent SW fanfilm; in fact, what with the video sequences in DFII: JK, it practically IS a fanfilm... it would be extremely cool, to say the least.
Another good SW game to make into a movie: Shadows of the Empire. While a little cliche-y (good guy running off to rescue princess, yadda-yadda) it had some EXCELLENT sequences that could work really well-- even more so if you based a good bit of it on the novel. I can so picture the Outrider and the Falcon flying around that planet where Boba Fett is hiding out, twisting and turning through its canyons... and then Dash fighting IG-88... the gladiator droid... Luke against Guri and/or Xizor... and then, the huge spacebattle at the end, at Xizor's station... definitely awesome, what with the Rogues and the Falcon around while Dash shoots up the station... and then the Executor showing up... w00tyness!

for some reason ideas like this strike me as wrong. videogames or other material based on movies themselves should not be made into movies unless it's significantly different enough from the original movie to deserve it.Elheru Aran wrote:I've always thought Jedi Knight would make an excellent SW fanfilm; in fact, what with the video sequences in DFII: JK, it practically IS a fanfilm... it would be extremely cool, to say the least.

it's much like the situation with comic book movies. start off with spiderman comic books. then you make spiderman into a big screen blockbuster movie. then, you make comic books based off of the big screen blockbuster movie which is based off of comic books. . . .that just seems weird and not right to me.

There was supposed to be a movie, with (wait for it) Kurt Russell as the main actor, but it never got off the ground. The Shadow wrote: Mechwarrior

And there's no way in hell I'm paying money to watch Kurt be the short napolean.

russel should have some sort of role in the movie though. something like a cleaner in a building who is totally irrelevant to the story and only appears 2 seconds and is hard to notice.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Duh.

there were a bunch of hints in sons of liberty that linked to russels snake.

There are no personal character details for the director to destroy or be limited by, there is an interesting moral implications not only of the pattening a mind into a machine but also the en-mass cloning and effectively patterning the minds of the original into several zillion clones.Captain_Cyran wrote:What? The only major issues are everyone is ultra competent, and there are a fuckload of required special effects for the battle scenes.

As for a Battletech movie, yes, it could be awesome. No, it will never BE awesome because the people with the money and the rights are whoring out Mechwarrior: Dark Age, which doesn't just /have/ plot holes, it's built from the ground up /of/ plot holes and implausibility. Never mind horrible gameplay and Games-Workshop-grade play imbalance, but that's beside the point. Sadly, if we see a 'Battletech' movie, it'll probably be MWDA, and I, for one, won't be bothering.
Regarding Total Annihilation, awesome game, yes, but I'd much rather start with a game with A) Characters, and B) Some form of dialogue between said characters. Moral questions are a dime a dozen, developed themes that aren't just window dressing are less so, and good characters even less.

Lack of any discernable characters is actually going AGAINST the game becoming a movie. With no major characters from the game, there is no distinction between Total Annihilation: The Movie and your local action flick involving large armies except the name.ggs wrote:There are no personal character details for the director to destroy or be limited by, there is an interesting moral implications not only of the pattening a mind into a machine but also the en-mass cloning and effectively patterning the minds of the original into several zillion clones.Captain_Cyran wrote:What? As for the patterning a mind and the en-mass cloning. Yeah, like that hasn't been done to death.
There is no real good plot behind the game. It's not movie material.
