They stopped refering to it as Metal Gear, too.

They've been calling it 'Shagohod' for some while now, which is, IIRC, a Russian word that describes walking combat robots. After all, why would the Russkies give it an english sounding name?

Technically, it isn't a Metal Gear. In keeping with the timeline, the first true Metal Gear was made in '95 or so for Outer Heaven in Africa by some other scientist whose name escapes me. Although in the 2004 E3 trailer, Sokolov does refer to the Shagohod as the ""the missing link between artillery and infantry" or "A kind of metal gear". I guess this explains the inspiration possibly behind Big Boss creating the first true Metal Gear decades later.

Dr. Pettrovich Madnar.

Presumably he hails from some eastern bloc country or other, with a name like that...

My, you are a slow one. If a psychic guy with a persona like Steve Buscemi and a Inuit who carries a Vulcan cannon around as a sidearm don't strike you as weird, you've been on loopy juice or something.
Fuck thatl, the wierd part of that Inuit was taking a hand grenade to the face in a cutscene, and then being devoured by Ravens in seconds.

IMO, Snake/Big Boss is only getting his ass kicked by that chick because he's holding back.

You mean because he loves her/its his mentor?

Does it really matter; you'll almost certainly end up killing her in the game.

Sure he's holding back, or he could simply be not as skilled yet. I'll bet that's pretty early in the game to be honest, something akin to finding 006 is a traitor. The shock of someone so major in his life turning against him, well, you try and get to grips with it.

It looks as if she leaves him for dead almost as she goes off with Volgin, nukes the research base and steals the Shagohod. Then after that I bet he goes after her and has to fight the coolest videogame bosses in recent times; The Sons of Boss.

He is pretty good at linking his repeated patterns; Liquid's goons styled themselves "the Sons of Big Boss."

Liquid was also naming Shadow Moses "Outer Heaven" as well in reference to his father's own grand scheme for a fortress. I'd say this is where the whole genes + memes + scenes thing comes into play. The genetic, memetic and time factors all intertwine with this series, like how all the stories in Pulp Fiction did.

Yeah, but I need to know that the "greatest living soldier" didn't get pwned from lack of skill.

I'd have to say that The Boss pwned Snake because she is simply the more experienced. Later on, Snake comes to terms with the fact that she is simply not on his side anymore and tries his damndest to beat her. She wouldn't be much of a legend if her friends and herself were easily taken out.

He wasn't the greatest living soldier from the moment he was born. Obviously he earns that title when he beats the *previous* greatest living soldier and her bunch of loony freak-show rejects.

BTW, the bit where he talks to the Russian soldier looks damn good.

For a second I thought he was going to kill him through the bars, then I realized that wasn't Big Boss' MO- in all liklihood that's one of the little events that will go towards him trying to create a Soldier's Paradise for all.

Didn't see it that way, but I'd say you're right. I'm wondering now if that "EVA" is going to be there to tag along or if she departs in whatever way.

I really can't wait to see the face-off with Ocelot though. Some time must pass since you meet Sokolov unless the guy can become a Western gunslinger in five minutes.

You saw one of the previous trailers, right? In it, Ocelot is wielding a PM, and kills a whole bunch of "enemy" Soviets (can't remember who they were) with Revolver Ocelot-type skill & panache. Snake schools him (I think his PM jams?) and as he's got him down on the ground, educates him that the way he fires his gun is more suited to firing revolvers. Then at the end you see him juggling a pair of Colts. So it probably would've taken him a matter of hours, if he already had a natural 'affinity' for it.

Yeah, I suppose that makes sense. Just seeing him with a tiny PM and then going on to being Charlie Bronsan seemed a bit odd, but then he was fond of that sort of stuff it would seem. I'm just trying to gauge the timeline here because it looks like Snake is pretty much fucked over by Boss when she leaves with Volgin. I see it as a split like between the Tanker and Big Shell sections of MGS2.

Is it just me or do the MGS trailers go on for a hellishly long time? I swear I've grown old while watching them.
I was going to say that I swear I've seen all of the cut scenes by now, but I realised what a potentially dangerous statement that was. Does every boss have a half-hour speech, before and after? :P

She also trained him. So she should know how good he is. At least until the end of his training.

They have a tendency of being long, yes. But Kojima-san fancies himself a movie director. :P

I doubt many would sit through 8-12 minute long movie trailers. ;)

They would if it was Star Wars I bet.

Besides, the ten minute previews that they show for movies now can be considered long movie trailers.
