Okay, looks like it's going to be Dambrath. Now let's discuss how you get there.

You could be native resistance, though with so many mages this is a problem; the Crinti half-drow don't allow their human subjects to learn magic.

There is a priestess of Eilistraee in the capital. She could get you in the country to wreak havoc against the Lolth followers and Loviatar followers in the country.

Halruaa could have gotten sick of Crinti raids into the Nath and decided to do something about it.

Could do the stereotypical thing and be freelance adventurers out to kick some drow ass and champion the common people and all that jazz.

Well since I'm playing a Zhent deserter (if allowed) my character probably fell in with the rest while heading south.

No problem, but if you deserted as opposed to an authorized retirement, don't expect the Black Network to be overly happy with you.

I am well aware of that. Why do you think I am in the south where they say"Zhentawhat? Never heard of them?"

I like giving my character's back stories that are potential plot hooks.

I might take a level of fighter or so and angle into Arcane Knight for the sake of the all mighty game balance.

Actually, if you're smart players, a mage-heavy party can be damned near invincible. I'm not telling you how to do it, though. :P

I have a few ideas. Almost everybody I've ever gamed with has been sword swingers, so I haven't had much experience with a mage heavy party.

I'm thinking of running a heavily defense-oriented mage, all abo ut shielding and illusions and counterspelling and such. Be an interesting thing to run in a mage-heavy party. And, of course, the flight addiction. We starting around first level, or higher, so I can start sketching concepts? (note: I might do a sorc, haven't decided yet, still quite a fuzzy concept.)

It'll be higher. I'm thinking somewhere between seventh and ninth at this point.

Note: With your character concept, you'll probably want to be an abjurer (specialist wizard focusing on the school of Abjuration, which deals mostly in protection).

I was waffling between that and a sorc, for the sheer counterspelling flexibility one'd have. Benefits either way.

EDIT: Also the flight-obsession bit would make some more sense for a sorc, with the whole dragon-blood thingus.

Hey, you can still have your flight obsession with an abjurer. Just don't take Transmutation as one of your prohibited schools.

Seeing as I plan on being a harper mage/geometer I am not native and would be helping the native resistance overthrow their drow slavemasters.

Hehe. True, at that. I'll see, still tweaking at ideas. One of the two, that's for sure :)

The Harpers do make a point of not announcing their identity. Much like the Zhentarim. This could make for an interesting subplot.
