I've always liked Nintendo...they make up for lack of quantity with solid, quality franchise titles.
I have to agree with you on all points. Especially that grip thing.

I couldn't STAND those demo grips they have. I hurt my neck bending over to see the screens. It holds the DS at a horrible angle, forcing you to hunch over if you're tall. I want to hold one in my hands... :(

I'm glad it's nice and wide; the GBA SP is about the size of one of my hands so it can get pretty uncomfortable to hold.

I noticed that the DS is sort of a GBA SP and GBA hybrid. If you take a normal GBA, it'd be the same width and and length as the DS. If you add the flip-open top of the GBA SP...bam, you have the DS. It's an interesting design, and I rather like it. It also reduces the likelyhood of scratching the screen, unlike the PSP.

Nit and I played around with them in the GameStop last night. We toyed with both the Metroid demo and the chat feature. I like it, asked Nit if he wanted one for Xmas.

But right now, at $150 each, it's a bit out of our price range.

Nintendo dropped the ball on GCN, in my opinion.

Good ol' Evil Lik-Sang Corporation has a pretty beefy list of titles for DS.

No, you just keep implying anyone who likes them is a six year old or the mental equivalent. If you are too moronic to comprehend why this might upset people, there's probably no hope for you.

Yes, Mario games do not appeal to the 'dark and grating' whiny crowd. Big whoop.

Nintendo has recently stated that there seems to be a bias that Nintendo is for kids, and that with the DS they intend to fight that reputation and are targetting teens to adults, though there will be kids games.
really? that´s very good news indeed.
There will likely be a ton of shooters- there will be a GoldenEye game coming out, for example. There are at least three racer games coming out, and a Zelda game under way. And a Metroid Prime game. Kids? Rofl. There's plenty of other games, as well.

I don't understand why people put down Nintendo for targetting ALL AGES. These days, there are very few games that kids can buy- all the good ones are for GameCube. So...WHY does that make ALL GameCube games kiddie games?
where did i say that ALL nintendo games are for kids?
GameCube is my favorite system due to the GAMES on it- Super Smash Bros, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Zelda: The Wind Waker, Spider-Man 2, etc, etc are all great games.
see, all of them besides mp have this annoying bright graphics.
and mario and zelda ARE the big titles with high budgets behind them.

Yea, you just imply they're six year olds. Like I said. Why don't you fuck off and deal with the fact no one agrees with your moronic knee jerk posts.

There are always alternatives for mental infants who need games to be dark and vulgar in order to make themselves feel "adult" and "mature" (which I think is a pretty pathetic for a real adult to do). So why don't you just go there and talk about how grown up they make you feel and leave the DS to those of us who aren't media sheep? We could certainly use less of your childish generalizations.

Hey look, he just called me a six year old  doesn't this guy learn?

Super Smash Bros /= annoying bright graphics. Is Ganondorf bright and annoying? No, he's dark and evil. What about Link? What about ANY of the characters in that game? None of them are cell shaded.

Spider-Man 2? Bright annoying graphics? HA.
Metroid Prime 1 and 2? Bright annoying graphics? ROFL.
Zelda: The Wind Waker? Most of the dungeons are actually quiet dark, and the animation is EXTREMELY well done. The graphics are a bit bright, but not annoyingly so.

So only ONE of the games I named actually has bright graphics, and it's not too bad. Maybe you should try actually playing these games before you dismiss them as for six year olds

I've always wondered about this. I'd take Zelda: Wind Waker over Doom 3 (a bloody, thoughtless shooter that doesn't have much in the way of story or puzzles) any day. I'd even take a GameCube over an XBox, because I perfer the games and I'd rather play the XBox shooter games on my PC anyway. I was on the LucasArts board when a console debate opened up, PS2 vs XBox, people flaming away, and when I mentioned gamecube BOTH sides started screaming that I was a baby and gay and all kinds of vulgar things. Why is this? Does a game HAVE to have people exploding in a bloody mess to be fun?

Is the DS compatible with Gameboy games?

It's all part of the whole 'I'm a teenager, I refuse to be considered a kid, look at me I'm a grownup' phase. Since society considers blood, gore, and sex mature themes, those seeking to be considered 'adult' naturally gravitate towards those.

Once you grow out of this, though, you tend to amble back to the old classics. Dear God but was the original Super Mario hard. Even with the save option Super Mario All-Stars gave you.

I didn't like Wind Waker, myself, but that was because it shattered the dark, brooding sense of the series as a whole. Perhaps I'm one of the wierdos who preferred the Adult Link sections of OoT...

Only Gameboy Advance games. Original Gameboy cartridges, no. Sorry.

Well I have a GBA SP to play my Gameboy games as it is. Besides, I rarely bother with those games anymore. The new GBA games are really sweet. DS is going to make things even nicer.

I should point out that the DS does not have the link cable slot, so you can not play GBA games multiplayer, only single player. But they will look better.

One quote I've seen:

"It's very difficult to give a visual comparison of image quality between the Nintendo DS and the Game Boy Advance SP hardware, but the difference is night and day: GBA games look much more colorful and vibrant on the Nintendo DS' backlit screens. Not to knock the Game Boy Advance visual quality in any way, but the bright DS screens really make the GBA images shine vibrantly compared to the slightly bluish-tinting of the GBA SP frontlit LCD screens."

So keep the SP for multiplayer GBA games, and for your old GameBoy games. The DS is great for single player.

Oh and btw, it's compatible with GBA games because it has a second slot. Meaning you could have a DS game in one slot and GBA game in another. Which is handy :)

That's understandable, but just out of curiousity, how far did you get? Some of the areas were fairly dark, such as Ganondorf's castle in the end, or the one temple with the mirror shield and zombies coming out of the walls.

But I'm certainly gonna enjoy the new Zelda game :D

Almost nowhere at all. Don't own a Gamecube, sadly. My addiction to Final Fantasy is far, far greater than my fanboyism over Zelda...

lol...never actually played FF, actually. Don't kill me ;)

Yeah, the game starts out all sunny and nice and happy, but once Ganondorf shows up...er...uh...thinks don't stay so nice  There's one part with an eternal night, where the sky stays black for a long time, and there's several dungeons that are dark and forboding with spooky music, and then there's the Forsaken Fortress where light is your enemy (spotlight hits you and suddenly a hundred ships are firing canonballs at you). And of course, Shadow Ganon is extremely fun to fight, as is that dang bird.

okay, I'm ranting now :) It's not quite the same as the original Zelda 64 (which is why I'm so excited about the next Zelda), but it's still pretty forboding in several dungeons and areas.

Oh, btw. Very insightful post- that sadly fits several people I know. :?
