Usually that obstacle also stops your bullets getting from your gun to its body.
I found that doorways were perfect... the trigens would usually hit their shoulder or something when they first leap (as long as you stand off to one side), leaving them about six feet away from the barrel of your shotgun, ready to be eliminated. Simple simple simple.
Did anyone ever complete that game? I couldn't get past the last level with the masses of rocket launcher equiped trigens stopping you from getting to the lift.
Yeah, the ending was retardedly lame.

I was so happy with Far Cry until it went all "crappy sci-fi shooter".

I loved stalking patrols in long grass with an MP5-SD6.

Honestly, I just turned on invincibility whenever those monkey bastards showed up, and turned it right back off when I saw mercs again.

Battlezone had a chaingun?

Would those slime things from Duke Nukem 3D count? I'm pretty sure they pre-dated Quake by a few months.

Well, Wolfenstein wasn't the FIRST FPS. A few predate it, but it was the first actually successful one, that people actually played. And yeah, it had that silly minigun. NAZI minigun.

The first FPS was "Rescue the Embasy Mission" for NES, no?

And I liked the trigens :P

Screw everyone. Far Cry rocked. Had a lot more fun with it than HL2

I thought I was the only one that noticed games seem to differ from movies when it comes to Zombies!

Actually there is one movie I noticed where they are different and that is Dawn of the Dead. They are able to run....and run forever since they don't have any feeling in their muscles. Forgot how they explained it.

Anyways yeah it's really annoying having stupid jumping zombies!

As for Farcry I love it! Its more fun then HL2 is, matter of fact I think I've played Farcry more then I have most of my games!

Another cliché is that enemies go from alive to dead without showing signs of damage/wounds in between. (granted, I remember some soldiers in Mohaa having a limb but still, I think there arent many examples. Isnt there also a game where you could shoot the limbs of zombies off?)

How cool would it be to fight against massive robots you can shoot seperate parts off which all will affect its combat ability

And don't get hit. If you get hit, you'll die (after a couple of whacks). Those droids are brutal.

I still remember the very first time I played Quake, oohing and aahing at the 3D environments.. and coming up to the door in Quake's e1m2 level ("The Grisly Grotto", I do believe :D) that cranks open with the cubes floating into the wall. While you're going "whoa" at the whole floaty cube setup, the door suddenly slides open and a Fiend impales you :o

I don't know about zombies, but the game Vivisector lets you do that to gene modded animals. Some preview pics I've seen show an anthro sheep with most of its limbs blasted off.
I prepared Explosive Runes today.

Couldn't you take out separate body parts in Soldier of Fortune?

Alright, the first GOOD FPSs... :P

Didn't Nukem come out at the very end of '96? I thought Quake was before it... either way, the blobs didn't really jump at you, they jumped up and down from the ceiling and slowly moved towards you. The Fiend jumped directly at you.

Still a lot less impressive than the Shambler, especially since the first time you encounter a Fiend you just got the Quad Damage. Of course, this has no bearing on the discussion, but I just had to mention it.

Yep. Although the enemies did react to non-dismembering wounds. A single hit to an unarmored location caused them to stop fighting and scream like hell for a while. However, if you left them alone after that, in a while they forgot they had been wounded and continued fighting :P . Not such a big problem though, since at least I always finished the job :D . However, all dismembering wounds caused an instant kill.

IIRC the only weapon in that game that actually did that was the bladegun, but that's beside the main point: That game sucked some major donkey balls. Probably the worst FPS I ever tried...

Unless you have anti-armor rounds. One direct hit from the anti-armor rifle makes a SBD go splat.

Mechwarrior 2 (and, presumably, the other games in the series, although the second was the only one I played extensively) let you do that. Not sure if you'd count it as an FPS, though.
