*Crosses the Revolution off of the "To Buy" list*

Looks like I'll be sitting out the next console generation.

Hmm... only complaint I can think of is having A,B,a, and b buttons. What's wrong with x and y?

And what's the Home button used for? Changing the wireless channel?

Home would probably be for playing the games you downloaded :D

Maybe it could be like "THE button" on the Gamecube controller. You know, the big red one that you always pushed if in doubt...

I did, and I'm not impressed. Have you ever used this technology before? These types of controls have existed on the PC for years (like this) and while they seem cool at first, they are't nearly as good in actual practice.

Now I'm sure Nintendo will probably do a better job than Gyration did (although their mouse was well recieved) but I still have serious doubts about this design. Why reinvent the wheel? It would have been simple to add tilt sensitivity to a more conventional design than this.

Still, I predict diehard Nintendo fans will lap this up as they have everything else the company has released for the last twenty years. But this isn't the design that is going to bring Nintendo back into the #2 slot, especially not in the US and Europe.

Anyone notice the HOME button?
Probably resets the gyro to a neutral position, perhaps?

I'm not sure how that is innovative exactly, every console since the NES has had multiple input device options, they just haven't been expansions on the base controller. And I'm not sure what advantages an expansion of the base unit will be versus dedicated hardware. Certainly not complexity, the PS2 and Xbox had plenty of variety (from DDR pads to the Steel Battalion controller). The only possible advantage is if all of these parts are included in the box, which I imagine isn't all that likely.

Based on my previous experience.

You better have a freaking bubble level to put it on when you power the system up.

Or maybe Nintendo will FINALLY have auto-centering.

I hope that's just some kind of odd joke which doesn't make any sense, because I frankly have no idea why you'd assume that. That and I don't really know why you made such a big deal of there being a button labeled "home" back there.

Personally, I think it either relates to a menu function or some kind of positioning/recallibration resetting deal.

Concerning the IGN video from the TGS, while it serves as a good general demonstration on how it's supposed to function, I don't think it should be taken at 100% face value.

My only doubt now is at how tired my hand will become from holding that controller up and swinging it around for hours on end. Also doesn't look too good to fight fighting games, maybe.

Watch the video, it becomes abundantly clear that this thing has GREAT potential, and according to the reviews of people trying it with the tech demos, it works GREAT. This makes me excited.

Well, it's not as if you're not used to playing games one-handed... ;)

the IGN article said that you could rest it on your knee, and a simple flick would move it across the screen.

It's a bloody remote.
I am not going to buy an expansion controller just to have a freaking joystick, if they don't include the joy-stick add on in the base bundle, I may end up hating myself and buying a ps3/x360 , still the saber tempts me....., Well maybe if the joystick add on is cheap..

Gentlemen (and -women), I move that henceforth we refer to the Revolution controller as the Phaser.

...y'know, 'cuz it's held like one from TNG.

This looks like one of the biggest gambles in history. I reckon it'll be a massive success or a massive failure, no middle ground here.

The thorny issue of how games not designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles - will be played. He had the answer: "We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded."
