Sorry. Got a little carried away there. ;) 4800+? In a LAPTOP?
Not too performance obsessed, more concerned w/ durability, portability and screen resolution (I obviously like squinting at high res on small monitors).

I think I'm finalized on the IBM/Lenovo R52 for 1121$, 1177 after tax ( :? - I though there were no sales taxes online? ).
There aren't if you ship it across state lines, but some companies consider sales to be made in-state.

R52
1.86 GHz P-M
256MB RAM
40GB 5400RPM HDD
SXGA+ 15" Monitor
9 Cell 5.8 hr batter
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Intel 2200BG WLAN
ATi X300 GPU

1223 (changed to 9 cell battery, plus taxes :x - I have classes that are three hours long, and before that an hour long class, and will probably schedule my classes similarly next semester as well)

Used the student/alumni discount (I think- they didn't bother to verify- I did register w/ my university email though, but they didn't specifically ask for that). Havent bought yet- still in cart (I don't have a credit/debit card, so I'm asking my sister to ask her friend who needs to improve his credit to get it (my checking account will be drained after this :x , and my cash reserves too- this is out of my student loan refunds (although I will have made up that money w/ the work study job+additional part time jobs I have by the end of this semester)).

256 ram is a little low. I'd call them up and ask how many ram slots it has, if it's two, make sure they only give you one stick, it'll cut down the costs of doubling your ram sometime in the future (and you will want to, 256 really isn't that much)

Yeah, I intend on buying more RAM elsewhere- the RAM they provide is rather expensive- I'll probably shove a 1 gig stick in the other slot after I get it.
