Their QA has problems - I know some people with Alienware laptops and no end of trouble. However, this weekend the ThinkPad will be sold at Office Depots for prices as low as $799 (IIRC), so they may well fit your budget.

For my current computer (which I've had for approaching 2 and a half years, now, and still running great with a handful of minror upgrades), I just took a higher-end Alienware system, and slavishly copied every spec, but bought it from a different retailer, saving almost $1500, by my final estimation.

And as a result I could run Doom 3 with graphics turned almost all the way up and no lag when it came out. :P
