The standard blaster pistol can be charged for very nice effects.
In the first game, the standard yellow Reborn had no force powers other than minimum push to break your weak grip. The cleanest way I found to dispatch them was to charge the pistol and stand still. The Reborn would run up to me, and he'd always do an overhead swing with the lightsaber, and I would release the charge shot into his head when he was holding the saber over his head to swing. Because he's in the middle of a swing, he fails to block the shot, and the charge headshot kills him. Works every time. It also works if you're running backwards while being chased by a swarm of them- I've spawned a dozen Reborn and just kept running backwards giving them headshots when they got close.
My big complaint with Jedi Academy is that they disabled saber_realistic_combat and it was very difficult to re-enable it. Dismemberment is all well and good, but if I slash someone with a lightsaber, I want them to die in one hit.

As far as JKA goes, I would have to say that the game is at its best with the Movie Battles. The saber and gun systems are changed drasticaly to make the game more realistic and fun. Its sort of a cross between CS (round based and limited respawn) and the Siege part of JKA (objectives etc.) Give it a try at the very least.[/url]

I started up the game for a few minutes. That was...four hours ago. My, how time flies.
If anyone else has the slowdown bug, you can set colour depth to 16 bit. Graphically the difference is barely noticeable, except that the laserbeams of the tripwires don't show up anymore. It's actually more realistic this way, all you can see is a small dot on the wall just like you'd see with a real laser
I've added an autoexec file to enable dismemberment (beats using the console every time) and a neat little mod called "Cool blud" that makes the wounds of lightsabre cuts glow bright-orange. Sounds silly, but it works nicely.
Once you get the hang of using the sabre and get into a rhytm of dodging and cutting though multiple enmies in one stroke...damn, that's fun.
Running around tossing Stormtroopers from platforms and slicing up the survivors is neato. I do not regret spending that €7.99.

They must have changed it then. In Jedi Outcast, all you had to do was type "g_saberrealisticcombat_1" (or something like that) into the console and lightsabers became one-hit kill weapons, both for you and for the enemy. But in Jedi Academy, the only way you could do it was some weird process involving modifying a saved game and then loading it at just the right time. I don't remember the process, but it was a huge pain in the ass.

Speaking of pains in the dismembered ass, I'm having trouble with that, too. I had an autoconfig file set up that enabled cheats (to make the dismember command work) and set dismemberment to 3 - that worked fine. Then I tried adding these commands to the shortcut, which failed - and now the autoexec file doesn't work, either. It's exactly the same as it was except my enemies won't fall apart

My version of academy made it work in exactly the same way as in outcast.

I never played Outcast, so I don't know how it's supposed to work there. Even with dismemberment turned on in the options menu enemies barely fell apart - and I don't think you should be able to take multiple lightsaber hits and still have any limbs left

Type, "helpmeobi1" or "helpusobi1" can't remember which, into the console then type "g_saberrealisticcombat_1" The value at the end goes up depending on how much you want dismemberment to happen. Anything above ten is an insane amount of dismemberment.

Yes, I know, that's the method that stopped working for some reason.
Now, when you say dismemberment, you mean that it also makes lightsabers a one-shot kill weapon, right? Because there are ways to enable dismemberment upon death without making sabers more damaging, and that does not interest me.

And that's actually the thing that does interest me, because with the method I'm using now lightsabre battles last about three seconds until someone sneaks in a hit by accident.
Walking through a group of stormtroopers waving two sabres and seeing hands and heads fall everywhere is a blast, though
I don't know why so many people have a hard-on for battles that last longer. The majority of mods for these types of games actually increase the number of hits it takes to kill someone to make them last longer. Battles should last longer because it takes skill to actually land a good hit, but that good hit should be instantly lethal. I just can't stand games where you slash a sword or lightsaber or whatever across someone's throat and they're not dead.

The problem is that the one-hit-kill thing works both ways, so if I dodge one Dark Jedi and stumble too close to another in the process, it's a kill. The only way to avoid this is to use high-level Dark Rage that keeps you going through lethal damage, but I never got the timing right
It does make the game harder, but I still prefer it anyway. I'd rather get killed all the time than play a Star Wars game that doesn't feel like Star Wars.

It's different, that's for sure, but you get pretty good at it. The key is low-risk slashes that don't expose you and staying at angles that won't result in you being killed when defeated enemies drop their sabers. It's not as good as a game that was built from the ground up with instant kills in mind (Bushido Blade, for instance) but it's not necessarily random, either.

There's more problems: thrown sabers are a bitch, since neither you or your enemy can block them when they come from behind; lvl 3 Force Speed and a well-timed roll can take out pretty much any enemy before they can even get their saber out; it's trivially easy to dismantle allies by accident; and the last level is basically impossible to complete with one-hit saber kills.
All true, but I still think it makes the game better even so, and I really wish in the next Jedi Knight style game that they would build the combat system around one-hit kills that are hard to achieve.

I've been tempted to grab this one out of the bargain bins as well. How is the single-player side? Multi- is all well and good, but I like to have a good solo game as well.

Cause, you know, lightsaber combats that last a handful of seconds feels like Star Wars.

If someone had landed a good hit in a few seconds, then that's how long it would have lasted. You can't carefully choreograph swordfights in a video game the way you can in a movie, and turning obviously lethal blows into minor nicks is a shitty substitute. At least it's similar to real life, where swordfights between skilled combatants tend to be decided before you have to take your shoes off to continue counting.

There are quite a few missions, and they are varied, not just "kill everything and get to the exit" or "find the keys then get to the exit". There are missions where you kill things, missions where you protect things, missions where you're just trying to find things, and missions where you only have to escape. It's not terribly long, but after you get done, there's multiplayer, and I'm sure there are mods with more single-player goodness available.
