Eh, I dunno who you were kicking, but when I kick an orc, he stumbles back a few steps. This isn't Duke Nukem's Mighty Foot, after all. However...hopelessly generic, not even a vague pretension at a plotline seen anywhere in the demo, and stupefyingly short for a ONE POINT FOUR GIGAGBYTE DOWNLOAD demo.

I think it's context-sensitive: if they're near an edge, they'll go sailing back like they're a balloon (even if they aren't dead), but in combat they usually only stumble the way you do. I noticed, because I killed all of the 'mercenary' guys by kicking them off edges and into the spike walls.

Thief still seems to have the best bow implementation. How sad is that?

Sometimes they'd fall on the ground after a good kick. Magic is a little on the weak side; at least this early on, the ice is good, but the fire thing... I don't see much value in it; least not yet.

The swordplay is great though. Very short demo however...

Good god, you guys are talking about the plot? I didn't even watch the intro. Who has time for that sort of thing? The game looks gorgeous, the swordplay is awesome (you can impale people on the ground. I mean, come on) and the physics are fantastic.

What 'swordplay'? The power attacks? Pfft. It's hardly Prince of Persia or Blade of Darkness, and it's quite possible to cheese (ie, kick and click) your way through all the battles. If only Blade of Darkness didn't suck. :)

Hahaha, I was just about to mention...

It did have a combat system with potential (although in its final implementation it did indeed suck), and I was hoping this game would be something similar (but not-sucky).

God damn, I played Blade of Darkness so much just hoping it might stop sucking for a minute.

*Every fight* was like a ten-minute prayer the game would just stop sucking. Then you used a specialmove (HADOKEN! :)) and it sucked again. But hey, challenging combat and Persian deities... you've got to give a little bit of slack. :)

Never played either. I always thought Prince of Persia was an exercise in limp lameness (look at me, I'm a Persian Prince! What a suckfest) from its first iteration.

You want swordplay?

Die. By. The. Sword.

Nuff said.

Anyway, this is the first game I've seen that does first person melee combat well and with some depth and nice visceral feel. I'm definitely getting it.

Isn't Die By the Sword the game with 'wave sword around like a feather duster' combat?

And Prince of Persia IS lame. But the swordfights are complex and difficult, and not clicking until you win. Point taken about FPS, though: first person melee combat always sucks. Is there a way to play DM in third person?

PS re DBTS, yes it is. That game had cool ideas, but the controls were just crazy.

The combat system - like the rest of the game - strikes me as hopelessly generic. Click to slash? Click-and-hold to power attack? Right click to 'parry', 'parry' being 'hold your sword and hope someone will hit it'? It's by-the-numbers. Vympel's enthusiasm had me hoping for a Blade of Darkness-style challenging combat system.

And I'm sorry, but ragdoll is STUPID. I kick a guy... he sails ten meters away? What?
Severance did not have a complex combat system. Go and play Die By The Sword...

Damn, beat me to it. I have DBTS, the expansion pack AND I've got archived somewhere the free release of the "Cuss Pack" that Interplay made available...

And finally, I've started playing it. I have EVERYTHING on high and have not noticed any slowdowns nor has my system temp been spiking (more than normal for playing games).

Its a lot of fun, though the kick knock-back effect should be toned down.

It's an early version, so there's always room for improvement. I don't know why I'm getting pwn3d by the slowdown ...

Anyway, Die by the Sword. There was an expansion pack?!

Yes, Vympel. I'm complaining about a hopelesly generic plot in an RPG. Go figure.

Yeah, Limb From Limb, added stuff like co-op campaigns (where you could play as ANY character - try finishing Co-op games with 2 Kobolds) and new MP game modes (including Ogre Hockey - 2 v 2 ogres trying to hit a Kobold through the goals). The Cuss pack just added some hilariously bad uncensored dialogue.

Yeah, the DbtS addon was pretty neat. Now, if the control system was any good, and I could fix those awful textures, it might be playable. :)

Vympel, try turning the texture level down. I got crippling slowdown when looking in a particular direction and couldn't work out why. Eventually I turned everything down and turned it slowly back up: turning tex from medium to high cripples my system for some reason.

Hey - the control system was good. With a bit of skill you could have awesome duels going on.

Waving your sword around like a feather duster, with no clear knowledge of where your blade is or where it's going? Ironically, the lack of pre-scripted animations makes it extraordinarily difficult to tell what sort of attacks are coming your way. Maybe it's just the camera: I never found a setting that allowed me to know what was going on around me, and still actually be able to put my sword in the way of other people. And I've forgotten how to force it to use a better renderer. :(
