"Commisar, you misunderstand me entirely. We owe the God-Emperor all and death is a small payment of that debt. No, you, as I, will live for him and his works and thus carry out his will. It is a very easy thing to die, Commisar, and we all do. Yet hasten it not beyond it's measure. The Emperor has a plan for us all and when our death comes it will be by his design, not our own."

Varian looked at him with iron certainty. His old master had spoken similar words, tutors hammered similar words into him, and indeed it became his life.

"Now, I have no objection to your staying here for the invasion. You're a worthy man and do your duty. But I must request that you accompany me after this mission. I believe you have with in you to serve His Divine Majesty further than as a mere Guardsman."

The man smiled, but it was not one of comfort or ease.

"I believe you have in you to be one of us."

"I... that is, Inquisitor Talstrem has already taken me into his service. After the battle of Hive Primus, I was seconded to the service of the Inquisition."

Him, an inquisitor? Was that the design of Lord Vonyirental and Nathan? It hardly seemed possible.

"My insignia was destroyed..." he paused, trying to remember just which battle his distinctive inquisitor insignia was lost in? The chaos marines? No, he was in a vac suit for that, but his uniform had been cut away so they could replace his arm and leg... yes, that must have been it. "In the battle to secure the star fort."

Even more baffling than the possibility of him being an inquisitor was the repeating of this 'live for the Emperor' philosophy, first expressed in a similar form by Pater. It was ground into them from the day they set foot in the schola progenium- commissars were torchbearers for the Emperor, and few lived to retire. The ideal was death in battle with the foe, be it the mutant, the xenos, or the accursed heretic. Living, that was not spoken of much at the schola...

Ristani didn't have to worry about being put down if he became a threat. Hethor was more than willing to do the job. In fact, if the colonel-commissar did more than look cross eyed at Gix, Hethor would revaluate the utility of having the colonel-commissar continue to suck in valuable oxygen.

"I am not talking of you being taken to service, well at least not beyond the tutoring, but you have the potential to become an Inquistor. Few individuals are so gifted, and not even all Inquistors, and your strength of will is rare indeed. I do not imagine the Emperor wishs your presence just yet."

Varian meant every word. The Commisar was a rare find strong willed, untainted, and powerful. It would not do at all for him to be wasted.

"I know you have doubts." The Commisar's mental turmoil was being broadcasted to fall to hear. "But there is more to serving the Emperor than dying noblely. Your life is his and you have no right to spend it before He is finished with you."

Varian withdrew his mind entirely. He would not risk interfering with this, the man would have to decide for himself.

Varian whirled, his blade coming up with startling grace. He had been caught off balance but he reacted with the instinct trained into him. Already he readed his mind for a mind to mind duel. Now he stood, power blade at the ready.

"Nathan." Xavier's voice carried little but the dull tone of psyker-power and anger. He was most displeased and it showed.

Prius studied the item in his hand as his whirling, pounding head tried to wrap itself around Varian's words.

"I..." he looked at Nathan, and then back at Varian. "I would be honored to serve. We are all but grains of sand in the hand of the Emperor, and only He can know each particle, know and understand and use it as it is meant to be used."

Good with the writings of the Saints, this Ristani.

He tensed as Varian whirled, blade at read, his own hand resting upon the hilt of his chainsword, before moving away from it.

If it came to conflict between the two, who did he serve? Nathan had taken him into his retinue...

Oh well, it looked like he was going to have to do something. "Inquisitor Talstrem grabbed the colonel-commissar a while back, Inquisitor Varian. You're the one that's poachin'."

Unlike Hethor, Prius had the sense of discretion to keep his mouth shut while the inquisitors settled this discussion.

"I would suggest, Gix, that you remember that as an Inquistor your duty requires 'rogue' psykers to be reported to the proper authorities. I would hate to see this Order take a greater interest in your affairs less we discover more 'slips' in duty."

Varian simply gave him a hard look.

"It is not poaching" uttering the word filled with contempt "to do one's duty. I would suggest you both remember that."

"And too whom would he be reported ? Especially given what has been discovered in this secdtor recently? For all we know the current Black ship for this area has been comandered by our enemies and the Pssyckers it contains are even now sacrificed to whatever dark poiwers they worship"

"He's already been tested, bright boy and he's in the hands of the Inquisition. If you had shown up on time or asked you would already know that," replied Hethor.

"You know as well as I that that the Lords of our Ordo do not take kindly to deviance. They cannot afford to, a fact you would do to remember old man. You would not be the first radical condemned, not by far."

Varian shrugged.

"If that be the case... you know procedure. It is left to our means."

He wasn't about to voice that thought with the commisar in such a fragile state of mind. No point working him up further with talk of summary execution. Either way, it was time to put an end to this.

"Commisar Prius, shall we continue our inspection?"

Prius wondered if anyone was going to order him to kill Hethor for his wagging tongue, or if they would do it themselves.

Hethor smirked at Prius. He wondered if the commissar had enough brains to figure out being in an inquisitior's retinue gave you a lot of room to maneuver. The odds were pretty shitty. He was a fuckin' commissar.

"Funny, I don't believe the Guard gave orders to His Divine Majesty's Inquisition." Varian put all his will into this. "Now go about your business and do your frelling best to forget this if you wish not to make more work for the good commisar."

Okay, yes, that would be good. Killing Hethor would be much more straightforward than dealing with the conflict between the pair of inquisitors. If somebody would just give him the order, he'd happily splatter Hethor's brains all over the wall.

As it was, he glanced at Nathan, caught between the two, before replying to Varian. "As ordered, inquisitor."

Just so long as nobody started in with those confusing lines about 'it's your choice' like Gix and Pater occasionally hit him with. Varian seemed to be suitably authoritarian, and he could comprehend that much more easily.

"Very well, Commisar Prius, after you."

Varian composed himself and followed the commisar. If the others attempted to press the issue he would give the commisar the order he wished. No one would publically undercut an Inquistor in such fashion and escape. As for Nathan, he was a thornier problem but could be managed.

"How long till your men are embarked?"

Nathan held his right hand out as he spoke to Varian...his left was still in his pocket.

"I'm just followin' orders from Inquisitor Gix," replied Hethor with a big grin. "And I don't recall giving any inquisitor an order, just tellin' them useful information. I thought that was the properly cooperative attitude. And I don't answer to him," he said pointing at Prius. "Is there anything else I can do for you inquisitor? Inquisitor Gix was quite specific that I was to render any assistance necessary."

Prius followed Varian. He would have rather liked to have killed Hethor. The man was clearly a disgrace to the Guard, to speak to an inquisitor thusly. But nobody had told him to, so...

He would just bear in mind Hethor's insolent attitude for the future, should another suicide mission come up.

Varian's lip curled in an amused smile as he heard the thought.

"You might well do that. " Varian said with a chuckle. "But until then I would settle for finishing our inspection tour."
