SKYRIM: Let's kill some Dragons!

Re: SKYRIM: Let's kill some Dragons!
I sorta feel insulted. This blood dragon decided to spend its entire time whacking mudcrabs, SLAUGHTERFISH and ok, one troll instead of me, the dragonborn?
I would feel pissed though, it seems to have killed off Meeko before I reached there.

So it turns out that once you restore the Ebony Blade to its full power by killing like 10 people you've helped out, it's pretty much overpowered. My Mage character basically has no health and no armor, but I got attacked by two Blood Dragons at once and killed them both because because it restored my health faster than they could deal damage.

You intrigue me.... I read up on the blade but it just seemed like another absorb health enchantment. The Vortex Empire wrote:So it turns out that once you restore the Ebony Blade to its full power by killing like 10 people you've helped out, it's pretty much overpowered. Also, can someone enlighten me on the Imperials being good guys? I just don't see it. Sure, Ulric a racist, but he does allow some High Elves in his city even as he has a grudge going on against the Thalmor.
But how are the Imperials good guys in this scenario? The Stormcloaks have flaws, but I just can't seem to find the good in the Legion side. More of "The Empire needs Skyrim" and the Imps didn't start the war. Once you start throwing in Denegir, Tallius dislike of how the Nords are complicating his job with their honour and etc, their brutal tactics to suppress the insurgency, toleration and appeasement of the Thalmor and frankly, some game random encounters stupidity(You sent two Imperial patrols escorting Stormcloak prisoners past windhelm..... WTF?), I just can't see how the Imperials are the good guys. More of the devil we know.

That's one of the things I well and truly appreciate about Skyrim. It's interesting trying to choose which side to side with, and it really makes you think.

I sided with the Imperials simply because they can't afford for the Empire to be divided amongst itself with the Thalmor waiting to swoop in and end the world of Men. Damn Nazi Elves.

Re: SKYRIM: Let's kill some Dragons!
That's my reason for siding with the Empire, my secessionist sympathies be damned. Plus, Ulfric was a Thalmor sleeper agent and I really hate the Thalmor. Lovely bit of "my species doth protest too much," as my character is an Altmer. I suppose an in-character reason would be him not taking kindly to Ulfric's treatment of the Dunmer, the race of his wife.

Re: SKYRIM: Let's kill some Dragons!
Calling Ulfric Spoiler
isn't really accurate. He's more of a Lenin figure - "sent home to cause trouble." IIRC, the Thalmor intelligence briefs specifically state that him winning would be a bad thing.

True enough. Still, that the Empire installs Nicey McNiceguy (Brunwulf Free-Winter) as the Jarl of Windhelm, who pretty much immediately tries to reintegrate the Dumner and the Argonians.

Re: SKYRIM: Let's kill some Dragons!
Ok....... Oooh, next time, I think I know to actually play through the main quest and civil war completely before asking this question, since I just got spoiler alert.....
Its an annoying habit I have, I find myself reading too much on UESP, even though my goal is just to find out how to best munchkin myself without breaking the game.
Although in THIS case, if I have read through the quest Blood on the ice properly, I wouldn't be stuck with this quest amulet that I can't get rid of.
Back to the main point though, it still seems to me that the reason for supporting the Empire is not because the Empire is good, but rather, because you hate other factions/other factions are worse. One hates the Thalmor, so, support the Empire to whip their ass. One hates the Stormcloak racism.
For veteran players, I think it does give a very interesting naunce on which side to support, but I can't imagine how a newb, without any prior imersion in the game lore would feel. Given the comparison to Lenin, one wonders if this was how Kerensky or Russian monarchist loyalists felt...... Ulric has very good points, but one can imagines how a Skyrim under Ulric could rapidly send the Empire spiralling into doom and a Skyrim that's intolerant of other races, if ascendant could become a mirrored Thalmor. If not, it would just make the other beastfolk and dark elves fate worse.
Ulric might not be a full blown racist, but Galmer is..... I guess what others has said is true. The game, IF you know the lore does set one thinking to which side is worth supporting.

That was epic funny. Went into the College of magic, passed my entry test, and just as I was walking through the bridge, a dragon attacked.
The game gave me one of those final blows cut scene when after the dragon has landed, I charged straight up for a critical strike. How's THAT for your entry exam bitch

And it's up; plus the rumored Mystery Bonus turns out to be a high resolution texture pack; free DLC.Executor32 wrote:The Creation Kit is slated for Tuesday. Now the real fun can begin.
"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers

The dlc is clocking in at a 3.1 GB. Time to get back to Skyrim, finish the vanilla game, and get started on my modding career.Lord of the Abyss wrote:And it's up; plus the rumored Mystery Bonus turns out to be a high resolution texture pack; free DLC.Executor32 wrote:The Creation Kit is slated for Tuesday. I got the Elder Scroll before I needed it, because I was doing the Oghma Infinium quest. The puzzle is simple as, its just lining up the lights on the roof by rotating the sections.
After you're done with it, you can sell the Elder scroll to the librarian in the Arcaneum for 2000 gold.

I've never understood the costs in this game. A small house in Whiterun is 5000 gold, an ancient scroll that is in essence a piece of the universe is 2000. Makes sense.

Just... don't think about it, especially when it comes to weight of items.

Does the scroll actually WEIGH 20 pounds or does is it a "quest item" 0 actual weight?

It was terrible.. it descended from the sky on a trail of fire! With it came a boom of thunder, and that horrible high pitched cry of 'SPAAAAAAAAAAAACE!'

Really like the HD texture pack DLC. Who doesn't like a free graphics upgrade? Everything looks so much crisper now. Pretty game gets prettier.

Amusingly, and unsurprisingly, there are a few minor bugs with the DLC. Apparently a few textures got switched with their normal maps or some such, and a few of the items have erronous path names in the directory structure which will prevent them from using the new textures.

A preview of some Skyrim enhancements that Bethesda's been experimenting with and that may be part of a future patch or DLC package:
"Stop! No one can survive these deadly rays!"
"These deadly rays will be your death!"
- Thor and Akton, Starcrash
"Before man reaches the moon your mail will be delivered within hours from New York to California, to England, to India or to Australia by guided missiles.... We stand on the threshold of rocket mail."
