I find Cowboy Repeaters all the time. The submachine guns aren't bad but they chew through ammo. Power Fists are nice for tunnel areas and mass combat, though.

The Assault Carbine is worthless against decently armored foes. What you want is the Anti-Material Rifle.

I thought that, too, but the ammo is insanely heavy, and I haven't even seen it avaialble for purchase anywhere yet.

I've been having fun with the BuildableBots mod that lets me build my own robot army or gang of frankenstein monsters. I really like robots and in Fallout 3 I'd pretty much always load the RobCo Repairman mod that let me repair destroyed robots to become my companions.
Just curious, what do you guys think of the robots in Fallout 3 or New Vegas? I really like the protectrons (for their looks and the fact that they seem like fairly realistic robots) with the robobrains and now the Securitrons being pretty cool as well.
Sentry bots are powerful things no question, but they don't make good companions since they can't really fit in tight spaces. I'm sure an army of Sentry bots would rock but they don't do well indoors.
Anyway, if you were a character in the Fallout universe and had the option to start your own robot army then what robot design would you go with?
Me? Ehh... if the Robobrains could be redesigned so they can carry equipment and use weapons in addition to their normal lasers (According to the wiki they could do that anyway, but the fallout 3 engine doesn't let them) and give them some protection for their brains then I'd go with robobrains. They are smarter than regular robots (or so I hear) and it might be possible to give people immortality by preserving their brains in that gel. Use dog brains or something for the majority of forces with possible human brains if its safe to do so.
Other than that... I'd probably have Sentry bots. Protectons and Mr. Handys have utility function and that is a good thing to have in the wasteland. Have Pretectrons and Handys doing work and maintaining as much industry as possible with a force of Sentry Bots on hand if you need to blow the heck out of something.
Robobrains and Securitrons look like they are middle-ground robots with both utility and combat capacity though the Securitrons have missiles, guns and grenades... so they are much better than robobrains. But that stupid one-wheel setup just doesn't make sense. Why is it that only protectrions, robobrains, and to an extent Sentry bots have practical legs or tracks? The Sentry bots also look funny due to their three wheeled design but I'd give that a pass on account of them being heavily armored. Those jets the Handys use doesn't look safe or practical for anything.
But anyway, I'd go with protectrons and sentry bots if I had to set up an army with robobrains close behind if I could get the infrastructure and a source of brains for them. I'd use Protectrons if that one wheel was replaced with something more stable.

Actually, I found that Ironman mode isn't that unmangeable. You can get H2O from desert plant fruits; and it appears to me in that mode, you can repair things past your repair skill level, albeit at an increasing amount of diminishing returns per item you cannibalize to repair with.Ghost Rider wrote:Think of that plus more of the same shit of "Now with realistic pain!!!!". Radiation is handled totally wrong, although this isn't just Fallout's problem. Hell, the whole idea of there being a high-radiation square on the ground with no detectable radiation outside it really says 'map editor' to me.

now that would be scary to see in Fallout 3 (what am I saying some modder is going to make it.)

Re: I went to Vegas but all I got was shot in the face (Fall
Wild Wasteland perk gets you the Alien Blaster, which is just ass-blastingly game breakingly ridiculously powerful. You'll get about ~200 power cells for it, which is far more than enough to make probably the most difficult area in the game (the Deathclaw Promonotory, across the river on the Eastern side of the map, directly east of the Lucky Jim Mine) incredibly easy. I killed something like 20 Deathclaws (including alpha males and den mothers) with one shot each. Just .... damn.
As for the quest scripting bugs, I've encountered a few, but no show-stoppers. A big 'comprehensive' patch will be out well before the DLC, AFAIK.

Chardok, go with a) hunting shotgun with mods or dinner call if you have completed the quests b) Crowd control shotgun

Dang it, I was playing the quest "I put a spell on you", and no matter what I do, the freaking train blows up. I think I might have to load from an older slave.

It's glitched all to hell. The bug is dependent on whether or not you talk to Captain Curtis in the comm tower when you spy on him. Don't talk to him or attack him, and you'll be able to disarm the train. (The bomb being inside the train towards the back, it's not easy to find.)FaxModem1 wrote:Dang it, I was playing the quest "I put a spell on you", and no matter what I do, the freaking train blows up. Re: I went to Vegas but all I got was shot in the face (Fall
So long as you don't let him see you (and don't talk to him obviously), pickpocket him, and then quickly make your way to the monorail, you'll stop it from exploding. If you're too slow, the train will take off and explode just before you get there.Dang it, I was playing the quest "I put a spell on you", and no matter what I do, the freaking train blows up. Follow the instructions on the wiki in that regard. It's doable.

Be very careful with your saves. I've gotten on and disarmed the bomb, only to have the train explode while I'm walking back to the door anyway.
Re: I went to Vegas but all I got was shot in the face (Fall
Weird. I talked to him, killed him, and made it back.
Though honestly, I didn't have a lot of time to do so. I had to reload a few times before finding the bomb.

I know this will seem simplistic, but I combined the various sniper-related perks with, well, a max-modded Sniper Rifle and called it a day. Sure, Anti-Materiel is more powerful, but the sniper rifle is powerful *enough* for 90% of what gets in your way.Chardok wrote:Question for you foolios:
Given that I just got infinite money, ummm...which weapon should I pack that is readily buyable at level 16 at, say, gun runners? I have boatloads of 357 ammo, but cant find a replacement cowboy repeater...so I'm considering breaking down the ammo for parts and doing hand loads for the ammo for the gun I buy now. I'm thinkin assault carbine, but how readily available in 5mm ammo? is the DPS/DAM worth it? Boone's rocking a scoped hunting rifle and is doing well with it, and I don't anticipate finding "NEWAWESOMESAUCEGUN#234095809" for some times now.
My second weapon is either of the 12.7 weapons (pistol or SMG, silenced if you can). They hurt things and don't take up much AP in VATS so you can set up decent and precise crowd control. It's not as impressive in a slugfest as, say, the alien blaster or a perked and modded hunting shotgun, but it impresses more often due to its flexibility, not to mention the plethora of stealth criticals I can weasel out with the right perks and the sheer volume of available stealth boys I seem to find.
Also, I recommend you find the Pulse pistol. It's useless against anything except robots, but it is a deux ex machina anywhere you have to fight robots.
Oh, and bring a flamer when you go to vault 22. It's astoundingly fun to go, "Confined spaces choked with a forest of mutant plants? Meet fire." and then just hose down whole corridors to crisp up all those hidden moss bastards.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

Except for one floor of Vault 22 where there's gas coming out of the pipes. It's far too easy to accidentally ignite it and fuck yourself over.Lagmonster wrote:I know this will seem simplistic, but I combined the various sniper-related perks with, well, a max-modded Sniper Rifle and called it a day. Also, I just completely slaughtered Camp Forlorn Hope last night and hilariously the NCA doesn't completely hate me. It took less than that for the Powder Gangers to villify me, then again I used a stealth boy the whole time I was slaughtering NCA troops.

Re: I went to Vegas but all I got was shot in the face (Fall
Forlorn Hope was practically lost anyway. They probably don't even realize that everyone is dead.
I decided to go with a hunting rifle for me and snipzor riflez for Boone. I have currently spent so much time speechifying and completing non-combat quests on the strip and Camp McCarran that when I finally left (only last night) I was able to walk into soldier ant land, they didn't even try and attack, and I was one shotting them all over the place where before, on the way to The Strip, I was terrified of being one-shotted by THEM! lol.

Re: I went to Vegas but all I got was shot in the face (Fall
Hell the game can be easily summed into these parts for ease.
1. Get 9 Luck. It benefits you more then any other stat in the game. Get 10 with a perk at level 2 or implant...your choice.
2. Get Boone. Boone with his regular gun and ED-E can one shot all but Cazadors and Deathclaws.
3. Get Handloader perk. .308 JHP will fuck anything over.
4. Get the Gobi(thus 80-100 Lockpick). Go over past the radioactive town (go east a bit more until you get to the Legion town and investigate the NW area around it) and find the Sniper's nest(it's a location). It is sniper rifle that is better then a fully kit out on, cost nothing to make it so, and with the other perk to repair anything or a shitload of weapon repair kits you never worry again. It has better VATS, more ammo, and better crits.
I got other weapon to do amusing shit with, this gun was my all in one death cannon.
5. Win. Why? Because with yourself and Boone sniping any and everything, you can clear out Caesar's happy camp any whatever else. Just make sure you stock up a tad on ammo since .308 is rare early on(y'know level 6-7).

The only problem with Boone is you can't really side with the Legion with him in your party. Given his whole "kill any Legion on sight" spiel.

Then don't be a dumbass, and substitute for whatever meatsack you want to carry your goods for a Legion walkthrough because your doing VH Hardcore trying to eek a challenge. Pick Veronica, and you get the HTH version of lesbian Boone.General Zod wrote:The only problem with Boone is you can't really side with the Legion with him in your party. Or go at it alone because ED-E carries your extra crap. In the end they should've renamed the Gobi into the IWIN gun. As I said earlier since it's a fully kitted out Sniper Rifle, except not silenced. But then again what does one care, since you can one shot everything with a slightly decent build(Only purposefully picking dumb perks or melee only perks...and even then you'd still 2-3 shot anything). Hell, the only thing that took two bullets, for me, was the Legedary Deathclaw...and that was because my level was low. At 20s or so I'd probably one shotted that thing as well.
