Not ones for completely alien languages, if we're going by DS9 and the rest of Trek. Or did you forget the Translator fucked up when confronted with the idea of metaphor?
Besides, cracking a language meant for regular communication is no more difficult (and in most cases significantly less difficult) than cracking a cypher code meant to be confusing to anyone without the key.
Only if you've got some reference point for the language. The Overseer's creators didn't even use base-ten math.
Also, note that I did say that I would let you say whether any particular piece of information was present at the facility. I never planned on just saying that I found stuff that wasn't there, unlike a good many other players I could point at.
In ten IC years, I'll tell you what's in there. Because frankly, there's almost no chance you could get any. It's not even encryption, though there's plenty there. It's completely alien and you have zero reference points.

Do we or do we not have universal translators?
Ah, yes, the infallible universal translators. Those bastards have never once failed the fine crew of the Enterprise when faced with ancient languages...

Or have they?

You also completely fail to address his points about the fact that their computer technology is based on an ENTIRELY different system than your own, which you will have to reverse engineer before you even know what it's memory looks like!

Small nitpick here, I don't mean to lessen the point you're making, but modular arithmatic is not a terribly difficult process to work with. Base 10, Base 2, Base 13, or Base 1312429174, it's a fairly simple process to switch in between each of these systems. Take in mind that we operate as humans as Base 10, yet our computers operate in Base 2, and constantly work in Base 16 as well. It would provide a bit of mystery to work with, but not overly much.

Of course, this doesn't mean that cracking your systems would suddenly become any easier, it would still be a long, painful process to try and withdraw any relevant data. The reverse engineering alone would most likely take years.

The reverse engineering alone would most likely take years.
Napoleon once gave orders to plant trees along every road in France, so that his armies might march in the shade. One of his generals objected, noting that it would take 20 years for the trees to grow that high, to which Napoleon responded, "Precisely, so we must start at once!" :P If you don't start, it'll never get done. I'm starting.

By the way, for those who missed it, the Trade Fair is in session. Pretty much everything except top-secret stuff is being shown, and the top-line Military equipment isn't for sale, but rather for demonstration, unless you make the proper connections. ;)

A good point, however, I seriously doubt any noticeable progress will be gained in this STGOD, and you will have to devote serious amounts of research into it, detracting from your military research budget. Basically, it's so long term you won't benefit any, it will only hurt you.

Sorry old bean, won't be coming. After the Rape, Krell is a tad bit paranoid, so we won't be going anywhere. A bad business decision? Probably. Completely in-character with my crazy-ass leader? YES!

I'm thinking about joining, and I really don't want to have to read through the 165 page thread, so could someone quickly summarize the current political situation, the tech level, the appropriate power level for my military, that sort of thing?

OH, wait, tech level? Power level?

12 fully developed worlds, 10 colonies max.
DS9 tech level
25 capital ships
75 cruisers
500 escorts

Well. I'm another newbie here but...

What has happened-> Look for a post by Bugsby in the last page.
Tech level-> DS9.
Strength-> 15 worlds, but there is a lot of variation around.

Actually, I think it's 12/12 developed worlds/colonies, but nobody's pushed that limited too far yet.

Also, newly started powers have a disadvantage in fleet strength to avoid being detected up until this point, usually somewhere between 50-75% normal fleet numbers.

I'd say that as a member of STGOD1 whose nation more or less came out intact, HemlockGrey could come in with a full-sized nation. After all the New Roman Empire was a major part of the first story...

That is of course assuming that he picks up NRE again. And if he does, he better have a good excuse for not caring about any of these events thus far... :)

That's never been in place for anything but someone's second/third nation.

I was under the impression that at a certain point, Pablo said that new powers would have to start at a disadvantage so as to avoid detection. I could be wrong, but that's how I recall it. *shrugs*

Right and wrong. That was his justification for why second/third nations should be weaker. But that should probably also apply to new nations for the same reason stated. And it might help out the existing powers a bit at this point. A lot of people that have been playing since the beginning have taken losses, and it could be considered unfair that new players would have an advantage over any established power.... but that is up for a mod to decide. I personally dont care.

Is the Trade Fair merely for your sales, or is it an open-house buy-and-sell deal? Because I have several space stations ordered by the Psilons but never picked up or paid for that are sitting around as multi-million-credit holes in the available capital of my shipbuilding industry. Need to sell 'em off.

It's to buy and sell. Any offers anyone has will be heard, and even if the Consortium isn't specifically interested, one of the other attendees might be. :)

I think I'll give the New Roman Empire a miss this time...I remember well the humiliation it suffered at the hands of the self-righteous "free" nations who simply didn't grasp the concept that some people are supposed to be free and some people are supposed to be slaves. :P

That, and I have a much more original idea. I'll post it in the OOB thread shortly...

Because the governmentdoesnt sell things, would attendees from the various private corporations be able to attend?
