"I'm coming too," added Adivan, walking up behind them with surprising stealth for someone in power armour, "I'd very much like to know what is going on here, and if they decide to betray us, I may get a little advance warning."
"The bird let out a slow chicken cackle. It sounded like a chicken, but in her heart she knew it wasn't. In that instant, she completely understood the concept of a chicken that was not a chicken. This looked like a chicken, like most of the Mud People's chickens. But this was no chicken.

The Huntsmen were enroute to extract the Arbites, hanging out of the open hatches of a chimaera as it trundles over the rubble strewn roads. Two more flanked theirs, loaded with Boreans and coursing ahead. Let them soak the rounds if it came to it.

Kruger met Gix a few minutes later. "I'm going to take this medical equipment" he lifted a package "back to the medstation. Don't worry-I have a plan in case things go sour on us."

On his way out he instructed one of the Kroot to find Cait and stay where he was.

A plan? A plan in case things go sour? Jolan surpressed a laugh. And people thought he was niave. He walked quietly down into the mouth of Hell. An inquisitor must be able to kill billions. How much easier it is to just kill one, even if that one is oneself?

Prius hobbled along on his makeshift cane, nodding a greeting to the other inquisitors as they arrived. Odd how things move in circles... they started this with a meeting, and now the survivors gather for a meeting to conclude the affair.

He was still suspicious of them. The xenos had proven to be of little use, so far as he'd seen, and the price in blood had been paid mostly by the Guard, as was fitting and proper.

But success was a heady tonic, and the extermination of the aliens could come after this dispute with the Mechanicus was resolved. He fingered his aquila, giving thanks to the Emperor for granting so many of His servants worthy deaths in His service.

"Knives, stand down"

"Bzzzt cannot understand, signal corr-FZZZAAAP, continuing to enga-BRRXZZZRRTT!"

"Knives, my finger is on the fail-safe. If you have somehow disabled it, I will hunt you down personally, I've already killed scarier things than you today. Acknowledge stand-down order and comply."

"Acknowledged" the voice bit out, with undisguised malice, "Complying"

That taken care of, Chapel set off towards the main entrance, taking the time to relay the stand-down order to Skorn as he went. Skorn's shouted protests could be heard quite clearly, even without the communicator.

Upon arrival at the conference room, Prius openly goggled at the holographic map of the Imperium.

He'd seen maps before, some approaching this sort of detail, but none with this level of sheer complexity and overwhelming sense of vastness.

To see the worlds of the God Emperor, laid out before him... he crossed himself at the sight of it.

Of course, this sudden show of faith was not likely to stay the hand of the mighty Inquisition in seeing to the grisly fates of these traitors. A small smile creased his face at the thought.

Inquisitor Jolan Gix stared at the display. Not in awe, for he had been trained on Earth and this piece of technology was not lost to race of men. Rather he studied it for clues. The enemy would not be foolish enough to let the map reveal anything they did not want known, but that did not mean there weren't clues to be found. After a minute of fruitless study, he sat down.

"Sit down, commissar. Our hosts will arrive when they see fit. I think today has been hard enough on both of us." Gix's force rod is notable for its absence.

He settles down in his chair, shifting a bit in the seat in an effort to find a posture that doesn't uncomfortably compress his sore ribs. Noting the inquisitor's lack of his force rod, his hand unconsciously drifts to his holstered laspistol, as if assuring himself it's still there.

"It's... incredible to view what He has done, is it not?"

Something about the figure in black, moving with implacable purpose, with the still-smoking hilt of a power sword on his belt, gave pause to even the most small-minded individual that might ask for credentials. Chapel was soon joined by Skorn, whose continued grumbling was the only thing approaching conversation between the two. The two of them found the still form of Knives standing just outside the entrance, which followed them at a gesture from Chapel, with Skorn carefully positioning himself behind the homicidal brute.

Quickly, they made their way to the meeting room, Knives taking up position near the wall, with Skorn still sticking to his back like a tick. Chapel looked over those assembled, and casually chose a seat directly behind Commisar Prius, seemingly unaffected by his obvious injuries.

"I felt the same way when I first saw it," replies Gix. "I spent the morning learning about stars, star systems, and planets and I thought I understood. Then my teacher took me into the room and activated the holo. I couldn't find Holy Terra. I couldn't find the world that I had been born on. The only thing that I could find was the Eye of Terror. I began to understand the vastness of the Realm of Man and the power of its enemies."

Prius nodded his greetings at the party of assassins. It was comforting to have such fearsome servants of the Emperor at their side in the coming negotiations, another reminder of the foul traitors as to why it would be wisest for them to surrender peacefully and submit to the coming punishment.

He looks at the map again, knowing that his homeworld was likely not even present... it had been subjected to the exterminatus shortly after evacuation. "From one world we sprang, and the very stars we conquered," he quoted from the Sermons of Saint Fayen. "Because in Him, all things are possible."

Adivan nodded. "Indeed, Commissar. The Emperor has given us all that we have; survival, power, and glory. I must say, though, I find it rather depressing how far we have fallen since the Great Crusade. So much has been lost that may never be retrieved, while our enemies grow in number by the day. We can only pray that He will preserve us from the darkness."

"No, we cannot pray that he will deliver us from this darkness. We are members of the Inquisition and soldiers of the Imperium. It is our duty to act, to use all that the Emperor and the generations before us have given into our care and fulfil our duty to our race, our Imperium, and our Emperor."

"True, true. We cannot afford to simply wait for deliverance. And yet, at the same time, we cannot hope for victory without the Emperor's aid. We can -and must - fight until we die, but without the Emperor's aid and guidance, death will be all that awaits us."

He holds out his aquila. "The Emperor is with us, always. Whatever trials we suffer are His choosing, to test us. If there is a failing, it is perhaps in the fact that we have not lived up to the standards of our forefathers, who reconquered the stars in the Great Crusade. And so now He sharpens us, ridding us of the weak that we may again surge forth and bring order to the galaxy. This I believe."

"The Emperor endures agony every moment of his existence. He endures for us. He endures so the Imperium has a chance of surviving. He lets his will be known to his servants, he maintains the Astronomican, and soul binds the Astropaths. Without him, there is no Imperium. He is already straining to his limit. It is not up to him to aid us, he is already aiding all of humanity. It is up to us to aid him. Not to mouth weak words, but take action in service of the greatest of all causes. We cannot shirk our burdens. We will never accomplish as much as he has, we will never suffer as much as he has already endured. But we must follow his example as he is the best of us, so must we aspire to be worthy of his leadership and protection."

"Indeed, you are correct. Perhaps I simply did not express myself properly; let us leave it at that. Has anyone heard anything further from Gyllia?"

"I am sorry, I didn't mean to jump down your throats. I find myself thinking of conversations that I meant to have with Chou, that will never be. I haven't heard from Gylla since her first transmition of the cease fire."

He ponders Gix's words. Is this... attachment? Sentimentality? Gix's dead servant, this Chou, is in the hands of the Emperor now and preparing to battle again in His name. Is this not cause for joy rather than sorrow?

Odd. He became hardened to such things at a young age, a calculated part of his training. He briefly wonders what Gix is feeling at this moment, before putting it out of his mind as irrelevant. He is a commissar, Gix is an inquisitor, and they each have their duties. Feelings do not matter.

"I took no offense, Lord Inquisitor," he says dutifully.

'A truce perhaps. The chance of recovering the archaeotech intact convinced me that it was worth walking into an ambush to come here. For more senior inquisitors to attend, well that is their call. I suppose it doesn't matter. The archaeotech has been noted. Should we all perish here the full might of the Imperium will descend in an attempt to recover it. It means that those here have very little to gain by treachery."
