Metroid Prime 1& 2 is a must have.Xisiqomelir wrote:Miscellany:

Gamecube emulation seems to be perfect. I tested this with a friend's memory card, controller and game, and so now I guess I can join the Gamecube party.
Aside from RE4, Celda and Smash, what else is good on Gamecube? I don't like racing or sports.

Also don't get SSBrother Melee, since SSB: Brawl is coming out for the Wii (Though Melee is ludicrously good and has the replay value of Pacman).
Also I'd reccomend Viewtiful Joe 1+2, very fun if a bit hard.

I forgot to mention the Mii Channel, which is awesome, and with a definate Mario Paint vibe. The three of us made Miis of ourselves, which are hilarious because they resemble each of us so perfectly in their simplicity. DP's in particular is incredibly striking in how much it looks like him...

Dammit, I have mine, but I can't play it until Wednesday, for reasons beyond my control!

I have a question about the wireless, but I feel I already know the answer.Xisiqomelir wrote:Wireless setup was very easy, even with my no-SSID-broadcast network (more than I can say for winblows machines).
Is it WPA compatible? If not, it's worthless to me. The DS isn't, so no online play for me. Doesn't the Wii also have an RJ-45 so I can plug it in?

Wired connections go through the USB->Ethernet adapter, a separate purchase.
Best news all day, thanks.
Oh, so it doesn't have an RJ-45? That's odd, but if it lets me use a real man's security system on wireless I don't mind. Have you tried the DS/Wii connection? Rather than cripple my network security, I was hoping I could connect the Wii to my network and have THAT with weak security so my DS could get online. Does anyone know if this is possible?
Oh crazy question, is this USB dongle the same one Nintendo sells for the DS, or another one that doesn't require software?

Sorry, don't have a DS.
The USB->Ethernet thing is called a "Wii Ethernet Kit". I have no idea if it is a different product or a repackaging of the DS dongle.

Rogue Squadron II is good. Avoid Rogue Squadron III at all costs though.Xisiqomelir wrote:Miscellany:

Nintendo will be releasing an accessory called the Wii LAN Adapter for $25, in December in Japan and it seems January in the US.

Don't be silly. Brawl isn't coming out till 2007 and Melee costs like $10 used at GameStop these days.DEATH wrote:Agreed on that.General Zod wrote:Metroid Prime 1& 2 is a must have.Xisiqomelir wrote:Miscellany:

Just buy a secondhand copy of Melee. It took us nearly four years of weekly smash bros parties before it got old.

Metroid Prime 1.
It's a game that takes a bit before you start enjoying it (much like RPG's where you start out with only one attack), so give it at least 1-2 hours before you make a judgement on it (I originally rented it and decided I hated it after 30 minutes, someone forced me to play two hours on it and I was hooked).
You can get two later but MP1 is the best of the two and really cheap these days. Go for it.
Also, the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
Wind Waker and Metroid Prime are the two best single player games for the GameCube. The best multiplayer is Super Smash Bros Melee. Those three games are three no cube owner should be without.
Same here, actually on the first night I got it while I was playing Wii Sports with friends, I looked in my hand and remembered E3, then looked at the non-gamers next to me swinging their tennis rackets and laughed hysterically a little bit thinking about how this feels exactly like the Wii advertisements with everyone jumping around looking like an idiot.Actually playing the system with the Remote, after all this time since E32K6, seems almost surreal. Knowing and seeing how it works absolutely does not compare to actually playing it. The emotional feeling I got upon realisation on how perfectly everything works was a combination of blissful shock and hilarity.
It still hasn't sunk in that I finally own the system I've been talking about since E3.
EDIT: Also, how is Rayman? I've been considering it for multiplayer. Is it worth the $50?

Eternal Darkness, if you can find it. Launch game that's a horror tale spanning several hundred years and many characters. Full of insanity effects to play with your mind.Xisiqomelir wrote:(Which games should I buy?)Spanky The Dolphin wrote:The Wii doesn't play GameCube games through emulation, but by containing GameCube-based hardware.

The Rogue Squadron games are a must have. I'd still be playing them, if my Gamecube wasn't busted.

Late to the party here, but I thought I'd share my launch day experience
My younger sister came down to visit me for the weekend so she would have a chance to try out the new system too. The only place releasing it at midnight in my area without preorders was Walmart, everyone else was releasing it at their normal opening time on Sunday (I actually called around and checked on this with every electronics store in the area.) Walmart wasn't letting anyone line up until 10 AM on Saturday, apparently there were some fights and other problems with the PS3 launch. Jenn and I actually got there ~9:30 and hung around in electronics until the guy there said that they were starting the line up outside.
We were numbers 2 and 3 in line, there was one guy who had been waiting at the store since about 7, and a girl who came in right at 10 AM. I came in prepared, we had a couple canvas folding chairs and I had brought along some sandwiches, snacks, books, and my ipod. Jenn had her laptop and her schoolbooks. We spent most of the day watching DVD's on her laptop (Transformers, Batman Begins, and a good chunk of Justice League Unlimited.) Basically, we four in the front of the line had a blast just hanging out all day
We were told shortly after we lined up that there would only be 31 Wii's; and although we passed that information along other people naturally didn't believe us. I would estimate that we had 30 people in line by about 2:30 pm. Around 10 pm the head of the electronics department came out and started handing out the tickets to those of us in line. There were ~100 people waiting at that point, but surprisingly there were no arguments or fighting. Hell, I didn't even get an offer to buy my place in line (not that I would have sold it, but still.) Around 11:30 I sent Jennifer out to the car to put things away and move it closer to the front of the store so we'd be prepared to make a quick getaway.
At the stroke of Midnight, the head of electronics came out, made sure we were all lined up single file, and marched us through the store carrying the sign above his head like a banner. Jenn and I were the first ones out of the store with our Wii. By this time they had the real police there in addition to the Walmart security guys, and we actually were escorted to the car by a K-9 officer and his dog. All in all it was a fun day, although I don't think I'll ever camp out for a system again.
As for the games, we got Wii Sports, Zelda, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. I didn't pick up an extra controller at the time (I'm kicking myself for that now), but so far all three are great fun. Wii sports feels really natural, it moves just like you would expect if you were doing the real thing. Ultimate Alliance is a lot of fun, although the controls take some time to get used to. Zelda, of course, is fantastic, although I haven't played it for very long yet
Incidentally, my girlfriend Tammy came over last night. She has the week off for Thanksgiving, so she came over to Orlando to do some Christmas shopping and came by for dinner. She hasn't played any video games since the old Nintendo, where she was pretty good at Mario and Tetris and kept dying in "That goddamned Friday the 13th game." She's fell in love with the Wii sports game immediately, especially the bowling. She made a Mii, and then proceeded to kick my ass in Wii bowling just like she does at the real thing Even she thinks it's easy to pick up and a lot of fun

Clever and witty signature to be inserted here, just as soon as I think of one.

Same. The guy at the head of the line kept an unofficial list of names and arrival times that the Best Buy people actually used. At least two people somehow were in line but did not know about the list, including one two slots ahead of me. Myself and another guy both went up to vouch for him, and he did get a system. I was asked if I had gotten on the list as soon as I got in line, and we did the same for those that came after.
North Dakota has a retarded state law that no stores can be open before noon on Sunday, so we had to wait an extra twelve hours. I got in line outside Best Buy at 9:15, and ended up with ticket #36 out of 45. At least it was a warm morning at 31F and virtually no wind. Shortly before the store opened a news crew showed up to interview a few people in line, and I happened to be standing just behind them. I KNEW I should have worn my crown (my wargamer group had a big DBA tournament on Saturday. It was set up such that we were all French nobles fighting over the throne. My side won, so I promptly executed the old king and claimed his crown). Everything seemed calm and organized, though they ran out of controllers, particularly nunchuks, almost instantly. Grabbed Red Steel and Zelda. Played the former first, was mildly disappointed. Then I put in Zelda. I may not do anything nonessential for a while...
I'd agree on Rogue Leader, but Rebel Strike was filled with pointless and horrible 3rd person shooter levels with you (barely) controlling your guy on foot.Vympel wrote:The Rogue Squadron games are a must have. I'd still be playing them, if my Gamecube wasn't busted.
It wouldn't have been so bad if it was a gimmick now and then but they made entire levels out of it. *shudders at the Dagobah level*
