But many are great- Shockwave made Generals interesting.Kaiser Caesar wrote:My computer does not meet the minimum requirements for the game, or just barely does, I'm not sure, and I don't care for mods anyway, and am afraid to use ever since one rendered my copy of Rise of Nations unplayable.McC wrote:Playing the game on 360 is a sin. Oblivion becomes so much more when you can mod it. Mods that replace the broken leveling system Bethesda originally implemented are particularly useful. I usually play with about 30 or so mods (of varying level of impact from purely cosmetic to game-altering) installed, and absolutely refuse to play the game unmodded.
That said, I've played through it from soup to nuts three times, and played through segments of it probably half a dozen times beyond that. Dark Brotherhood remains my favorite part of that game.

Re: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
I've recently bought the game for the PC (GOTY edition, so I'm planning on going completely mad before oven thinking about giving the shiny thing to that guy in whatever). First thing I did was to mod it like crazy with suggestions from you guys in an older thread. I've given up counting on Wrye Bash how many I now have, but MMM+OOO is proving more than a little funny, especially when exploring the northern mountains and meeting a polar bear at level three. My sneak attack steel arrow with my new arctic bow must have knocked off at least 1% of it's health bar. I do quite like the lolphysics that allow a single arrow to fire a bear sideways for a good few feet, killing it instantly. Might be due to a strength of 70-odd, but I have my doubts.
On Ye Olde Slide Rule, everything appears to be working quite nicely, but I might grab the low-poly grass mod to up the framerate a little.

I'm considering starting a new character now. The current character I have now is too, well, boring.
I'm narrowed the choice down to a Breton Mage or altering my own created class, getting rid of the magic and adding blunt and hand-to-hand.

Hand to hand is really good if you enjoy banging your head against the wall and questioning whether or not it's fun to do nothing but die all the time when you run up against any monster in the game ever. Unless you get a mod to fix hand to hand, you'll spend all your time feebly flailing your unarmed skill up to 70, only to realise that at skill level 12, your iron sword is killing things faster.

Re: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Alright, I've decided to go alter my personal created character class (Hired Sword), making it more of a fighter class, and scrapping my two magic skills in it (a first for me, I always go for the dark powers of magic).
My character build:
Race: Imperial
Gender: Male
Birthsign: Atronarch
Attributes: Personality and Strength
Major Skills: Blade, Block, Blunt, Hand to Hand, Heavy Armor, Mercantile, and Speechcraft.

I would recommend Restoration, over speechcraft. The faster training for speechcraft is useless because the skill is useless, whereas Restoration is always handy, notably convalescence spells that heal your followers, or expect to accumulate a lot of corpses.

Okay, I played through my Imperial Hired Sword, and I didn't really like it. So I've decided to go back to what I do best in these games: magic.
I've decided to make a Breton Mage with the Apprentice Birthsign. I'll likely stick with him to.
Okay, I am back outside the Imperial Prison Sewers now. I'm going to sell off my loot, buy some more powerful spells, then I'll go from there.

Heh. Heh. "Powerful spells."
Actually, the best ones I used when I was playing a mage were all touch spells. There were cheaper than ranged (both cost and mana), did the same or more damage, plus it didn't really matter either way, since most creatures got within beating range before I could kill them with ranged spells.
Summons were kind of useful, if only for luring out enemies and giving yourself a meat shield.

Re: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
All righty, I made it to the Imperial city, sold off most of my loot, bought some spells (and burning through a good portion of my money in the process - I think Edgar was lying to me when he said his products were at a discount), and then one of the store owners gave me an offer. Said something about a Wood Elf selling his stuff at far lower prices then the other merchants. So she told me to spy on him. Ah well, at least its money.
I also went to the Arcane University, trying to join the Mages Guild, but they told me I would have to go to each individual Guild Hall and get permission from he owners before joining. Yay. Sounds like fun.
Anyway, I feel like I should be heading to Chorrol right now and giving the Amulet to Jauffre, but, at the same time, I feel like just doing my own thing for a while. Perhaps do some meaningless side quests or something. Join a couple of guilds. Yet, it feels like I'm kind of letting the Emperor down and dooming the Empire to chaos if I don't help out and get another Emperor on the throne.
Ahh, what the hell, I'm only really in it for money anyway.

Also, I was thinking about the job I was given by Jensine, and I've realized there's no real good group in this scenario. From what I've been told, by both Jensine and implied by Thoronir, he's been getting his goods in... less then legal ways. Yet, at the same time, this Society of Concerned Merchants (or whatever it is) seems awfully shady to me.

How many disks was the Game of the Year edition?

Yeah, don't worry about buying all new gear all the time, even the spells. Basically you can take a round trip around the lake and around Imperial City and find three or so old elven cities and half dozen 'Forts' you can raid and easily equip yourself with good armor/weapons and sell the rest for good gold. You can make an easy four or so grand in three to four levels before you go off in search for Martin.Kaiser Caesar wrote:All righty, I made it to the Imperial city, sold off most of my loot, bought some spells (and burning through a good portion of my money in the process -
It's an easy quest and straight forward, like most of them. Only sucks if you don't have either an alteration spell to open locks or a security level high enough to open locks.I think Edgar was lying to me when he said his products were at a discount), and then one of the store owners gave me an offer. Yeah, it's not. However, Mage Guild has access to a lot of spells you might want.I also went to the Arcane University, trying to join the Mages Guild, but they told me I would have to go to each individual Guild Hall and get permission from he owners before joining. Yay. Sounds like fun.
Meh, get some leveling done, just so you know how to run your toon before you get too far into the main story. Join a guild, try the black hand guild, etc... A couple of good quests in Imperial city too, go to the waterfront and sleep on the boat/hotel thing and have some fun with that.Anyway, I feel like I should be heading to Chorrol right now and giving the Amulet to Jauffre, but, at the same time, I feel like just doing my own thing for a while. If you are doing magic, focus on one or two things since new spells are expensive. Don't try to get electrical shock with Ice shock and Fire shock. Just choose one and build from there. I use the frost touch with a snow ball spell for range, add to that a summon spell and make sure I've got 'open lock' and I'm good.
