I always thought it was kinda fun how the supposed "ultranationalist" paratroopers were packing South African firearms.

I for one only played SP. And I enjoyed it very much.

This is pre-WWII. You can sort of tell from the sketch style, from thee way it refers to Japan (Japan in the 1950s was still rebuilding from WWII), the spelling of Tokyo, lots of details. Nothing obvious... except that the upper right hand corner of the page reads "November 1931." --- Simon_Jester

I think the developers confirmed that kotaku only got some of the details, and that while parts are correct we should wait till the full reveal. I won't argue plot holes, since I am no expert on military matters or logistics, but I plan to get the game if possible (moving to america and trying to mod my console might complicate things). I enjoyed the other games, the stories were passable, the gameplay genuinely involving (if a tad frustrating, but then I don't play alot of fps's), and the characters genuinelly got me engaged (Price is cool throughout, the SAS team genuinely involves and the villains are so evil I might play just to shoot markarov or to do the scene where you throw a knife through sheppard's eye.)

and how was black ops meant to be taken seriously? the after credit mission has robert mcnamara jfk richard nixon and fidel castro joining forces to kill hordes of zombies for fucks sake

It's something I've regularly heard quoted by industry figures. For most games really. Many, many, many people never ever play online.

I could have sworn there were MP achievements for MW2, but it turns out there arent. Going by the black ops achievements 75% of all players have played the sp, winning the first mission. There aren't any good MP achievements to judge by as they are not things like 'play a match' but the highest one has 37%, so that gives an absolute lower bound for the proportion.

We also can't assume that the 25% of people who didn't play sp only play mp, as there are a number of reasons why an achievement could not be recorded such as offline mode or just not playing the game at all yet.

There may be other games where achievements can give a better comparison between sp/mp participation rates.

No there aren't, because it was quoted years ago that only around half of all 360s ever connect to Live so their achievements wouldn't be visible. They only have 25M Live accounts, and some 360s are used for more than one.

I tried to track down the article about it, but it's so old the site wanted me to sign up to see it. :)

The thing that made me laugh about Black Ops and Modern Warfare 1 and 2 was one of the complaints that there had been about the use of vastly out of place and out of date firearms in the MW series. The prime example being the RPD Light machine gun, yet when it came to a game set in a time when the RPD would fit (Black Ops), there was no sign of it.

As to Modern Warfare 2, was the story feasible, shit no, it was pure bloody brainless escapism, except it was fun escapism as long as you switched off your brain and in addition put it in deep freeze, well except for the Favela missions...

What MW3 will be like is anyones guess, especially with the break up of Infinity Wards original team, but I bet it will be as batshit insane as the previous entry.

Out of date? A gun is a gun. An M1 Garand shoots things that will kill someone just the same as the XM8. I'm sick of this attitude in shooters where the only the latest and greatest super guns should be used. Especially when many of the countries these games are set in are poor as shit. They're finding Mosin Nagants, Lee Enfields, and freaking StG 44s in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq today. But nah, everyone in the Brazilian Favella owns a UMP or ACR.

It didn't particularly bother me, it was just a bit odd, though I suppose considering Black Ops wasn't made by Infinity Ward might have had something to do with the RPD issue. To be fair, there were a fair few shotguns and Uzi's in the Favella which aren't exactly the highest tech, though as you say, both will still kill you.

I think the complaint was that otherwise well equipped special forces were using 50 year old guns that literally have not been in use for decades, like if US SEALS were tooling about with garands and shit, its just silly. I'm pretty sure those same people complained about Brazilian thugs equipped with ACRs as well. The weapons should fit the group.

Since they equip the guys in SP with the weapons they already designed for MP - where I don't doubt the coolness of a gun is a major factor - they probably just assign whatever gun has the right stats.

I mean, it'd be way too hard to add half a dozen guns that aren't used in multi. Right? :V

[Nitpick]To be fair, the M-14 is essentially a Garand conversion kit and remains one of the more popular non-M4 weapons in the SpecOps world apparently.[/Nitpick]

fucking christ ando

EDIT: i mean, having rebels equipped with shitty tommy guns or lee-enfields and shit is fine, but i guess that would be too hard, and they might actually need to, you know, design SP around this power imbalance. or not, seeing as you play a super-tough, regenerating super man anyway.

ironically, one of the reasons gamers immediately recognize the ak47 and want only the ak47 was because devs included the ak47 because they thought it was iconic

Oh no. I get all that. How come they all have rifles anyhow? Really? None of them are just stuck with a .38 special or a beaten up Browning 9mm?

And the fact that they all have fucking five hundred dollar plus optics on their weapons.

But I guess it's easier to just randomly spawn shit than design.

Hey, it's not like Joe Consumer cares about any of this stuff. He wants to play a game about tacticool soldias equipped with the latest in plastic bullpup/picatany/acog glory. For gamers these games are popular for the same reasons Quake and Counter Strike were popular in their time too. The differences are that, A. Gaming has become mainstream and B. Modern Warfare struck at just the right time during a period of milwank fascination in American culture that is still going on.

Let's face it, a lot of other people playing these games are wannabees. They want to be tough guy soldiers like how people back in the 40s dreamt of how awesome it must had been to be a Cowboy or a Pirate. You couldn't tell some kid then that a Cowboy really spent 99% of his time eeking a living out of walking through horse shit, the other 1% of the time blowing his money off on booze.

I'm sure one day people will figure out that real soldiers spend most of their time combating the sheer boredom that is Modern Warfare!!11!! That Special Ops forces don't fight that much and they certainly don't run around South American villages shanking gaurds to free hostages. That an Army doesn't design weapons around coolness factor. (I've encountered people who don't believe me when I tell them the M249 and M240 are both Belgian designs.) And that no, we are not going to invade China or Russia soon.

But until then, imma go to that pool party they're having at Robert Kotick's place.

Let's be fair. That trailer is pretty hot.

I mean, I'm going into it expecting more of what MW2 was, stupid-big, Michael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer set pieces and fun.

If it's not 100% ISO-9000 Grognard compliant I couldn't give two shits as long as it is a blast when I get my hands on it.

I'll admit, I want to see where the single player story goes. Unbelievable, but hey, it got me hooked. I have no excuse, it just is what it is.

And if they bring Kevin McKidd back as Soap and Hans Zimmer to do the soundtrack with awesomeness such as "The Enemy of my Enemy", "Of Their Own Accord" and "Wolverines!" I will totally be there.

That's because they aren't, FNH USA is an American subsidiary of a Belgian Company and they designed the M249 and M240. See the minor changes we made like the heat shield make all the difference.[/sarcasm]

So long as the single player isn't stupid short, I'm game... I already liked the Black Ops campaign the most out of any in the series so far, and certainly moreso than the multiplayer.

Wonder what the heck the "SAS" (why is it that they're wearing only the black "Iranian embassy" jumpsuits???) were doing wielding fixed-stock MP5s with no handguards though... unless that was just "we needed a trailer, throw a model on and we'll fix it in the actual game release."
