Here's my latest attempt at breaking 5km/s with fully stock parts.
School requires more work than I remember it taking...
Re: Shep is going to love this little rocket game
How well does that thing handle? I notice a lot of my rockets, esp when they are down to single stacks, will do a wobble back and fouth, though not completely tipping.

Re: Shep is going to love this little rocket game
I've been making orbiters for the past hour or so. My most recent, the Eagle MKIV, manages a decaying orbit that can take the craft about halfway across the planet before it lands.
Unfortunately, either the capsule had too much ground speed (unlikely), or the game doesn't let you land on that part of the planet, because the capsule exploded the instant it hit the ground, at speeds easily survived by it before (12.5 m/s)
My total covered distance was a quite a lot, though:
Total Dist.: 2820325 m
Ground Dist.: 2577833 m
Max. Alt.: 316398 m

Ok that design is why I REALLY hope they add a "double sides tri connector" piece soon.Norade wrote:Here's my latest attempt at breaking 5km/s with fully stock parts.
The tri-spliter piece is fantastic for making tightly bundeled rockets, but as other have said, the longer you make them the more unstable they get and tend to wobble or oscillate.
I tried a design like that and it kept blowing up a few seconds after launch due to the wobbeling. Did you actually launch that Norade? Should post screens

Re: Shep is going to love this little rocket game
If you've got three fuel tanks on the top end then it won't lift three tanks on the low end without SRBs. The problem with SRBs is they burn out ay faster than liquid fuel engines and it might make you waste a stage. Based on that, no problems at all once I learned that an SAS per engine per stage solves the whole stability problem. Also, if you do use SRBs, put an extra crew module on top and it solves the maneuverability problem. SAS modules stop it from going every which way, but only crew modules provide actual directional control.OmegaChief wrote:Say Coffee, do you have the problem with the Derpflinger where it'll take like 20 seconds of engine fire on the pad to lift off? Or did you find a way around it?

Re: Shep is going to love this little rocket game
I'm only using two fuel tanks per stage right now, based on the engine heat on the second stage I think running a burn through three fuel tanks might make it explode.
I have found boding one SRB onto each of the first stages fuel tanks gives me the kick I need to get off the pad though, I'll get some pics up later, after I experiment a little more

This odyssey, this, exodus. Do we journey toward the promised land, or into the valley of the kings? Three decades ago I envisioned a new future for our species, and now that we are on the brink of realizing my dream, I feel only solitude, and regret. Has my entire life's work been a fool's crusade? Have I led my people into this desert, only to die?

Re: Shep is going to love this little rocket game
This thing is a bitch to get off the stand. It tries to break up, but it can just make it. I buzzed the tower a few times with earlier designs. It's not always stable though, like if it sits on the pad too long it will crash.
Getting her up is tough so screen shots are out. I did just take a video with the free version of fraps so you can see how hairy launches are. Just uploading it now.
Nice tip on the crew module thing Coffee.

I just reached orbit with half a tank of fuel left. The little green guys became calm after they didn't die. After going 3/4 of the way around the planet I got bored, fired off the engine and began the descent.

Re: Shep is going to love this little rocket game
My latest is the Suidical Insanity type rocket.
With a first stage of 7 SRBs placed in an arrangment that apparently offers as much sideways and spinning as it does up, it leaves the pad with all the grace of a barely aerodynamic rocket built and crewed by morons.
Despite that, I did get into space, if not orbit. I'm sure it could get into orbit though. Somehow.
Jeb finds loop-de-looping spaceships awesome, apparently. Despite that burn, they hit about 540km before that fucker Newton finally deigned to notice.
Jeb remained gleeful throughout the flight, even during parachute testing. i.e. how high up should I pop the 'chute...
Oddly enough, though, he is terrified of water. Or possibly his own survival.
We will continue science with this version. To the skies with Suicidal Insanity!

That is... capsule/normal liquid fuel rocket/enormous solid rocket/huge liquid fuel tank with massive engine.

Re: Shep is going to love this little rocket game
And here's my offering, of the Posideon series of rockets.
The good old Mk 1, surprisingly effective, though takes 20 seconds to leave the pad on full burn, but this was rectified with the Mk 2
The trio of SRBs bodged on get me nice and clear of the pad alright, but there's some slight speed loss as they run out before the Liquid engines build up enough speed, not that much though.
And the Mk3 boosts the whole Mk2 assembly up quite a ways, when the final stage seperated I was pushing 3Km/s with it, remarkabley stable too, just holding F for the SAS will get her to fly nice and steady straight up, I reckon I can achive orbit with the Mk 3, if I could work out the right trajectory.

Also, that image I posted above is a link to a video. I thought it would display like a youtube video so I posted it without any additional text.

Re: Shep is going to love this little rocket game
I'm thinking of posting some challenges. What do you guys think of these:
1) Least stages for extra orbital (they're never coming home).
2) Highest speed for extra orbital
3) Most orbits before degredation
4) Highest stable orbit
5) Most ground distance travelled in orbit (may be the same as 3)
Can anyone do these/think of any others?
