128 meg video card...1 gig of ram, 2 gigahertz video card, and that game runs like the sweetest dream I have ever come across. I love it.
Only problem is, it crashes at the end of the first level. And it took me an hour to install because my comp kept forgetting that I had a CD-R and DVD-ROM drive.
Anyone know how to get past the crash?

I saw the hardware specs. I had no clue it wouldn't support 98SE. I mean fuck, I didn't even see it mentioned on the message boards. Albeit I didn't really read the Doom 3 threads.

I had it on pre order. So I just picked the shit up. It wasn't until I got home and started to install it that it popped something up during the install process. There isn't anything I can do now though, cuz they don't take comp games back.Grand Admiral Thrawn wrote:Didn't you read the box?

Try updating your drivers, make sure there's nothing weird running in the background.

This is really just starting to add to my severe hatred for PC games. The total combined price of all three next gen consoles has amounted to less then I spent just to get this computer up to par to run any decent titles, and I had to shell out even more to get it to even run Doom3. Now I have to plunk out another 100 bucks just to play the game. Hell, I've got an Xbox now, I should've just waited for the damn XBox version, no matter how watered down it is.

The real question is, why are you still running Windows 98?

There's nothing weird. It used to crash at the end of the bio-scan. Now it crashes me in the room afterwards. This is annoying the crap out of me.Spyder wrote:Aha! It wasn't just my imagination!Xenophobe3691 wrote:

Hmm...make sure your graphics and motherboard drivers are up to spec, you've got DX9.0b or later etc etc. If that doesn't work then something weird's going on.Xenophobe3691 wrote: There's nothing weird. As for the screenshots. I use Irfanview.

My Doom 3 review, sorta
OK so I played doom 3 yesterday, I'm not overly impressed, possibly because I have to run it at the lowest resolution there is in order to make it playable.
I also find it's too "consoleish" for my tastes, 3-4 pistol shots to the head being requied to kill the most basic zombie just ruins it for me, I guess was just hoping for Doom but with gore and anatomic realism added.
Weapons feel underpowered as well and even the most basic enemies take alot of ammo to kill, too much really, thats not very doom like either, it's more like one-on-one fights most of the time.
In my scenario I'd be running with a shotgun and taking down two basic zombies with one blast which rips up their bodies like Soldier of fortune on steroids and then a high calibre pistol shot in the head of another which would blow his head to pieces with zombie brains flying everywhere.
Also they should have reused the marine design of Doom marines not Quake ones(quake marines look stupid, doom marines look cool), they should also have re-used the Doom guns(old style!), they used variations of the quake guns instead *sigh*
It doesn't feel like Doom, it feels like a better looking, better playing version of the abysmal shitgame Firewarrior, ofcourse it's not hard to beat that pile of assfuck... It feels generic to put it simply.
I'm sad

Anyone who followed this game for the past 2 years knew that it wasn't going to have the fast-paced run and gun style of Doom 1/2/F.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Oh so it was never going to be Doom then.Hamel wrote:Anyone who followed this game for the past 2 years knew that it wasn't going to have the fast-paced run and gun style of Doom 1/2/F.
No I didn't particularly follow this games development.

I felt weapons seemed underpowered at first, but I just got to Hell, and I think that they've leveled out pretty well.
The pistol sucks. It's always sucked. In the original, it still took 3-4 shots to put a zombie down; now you just have to aim at the head.
The shotgun owns close range. You can take out virtually everything with two shots at close range except Revenants, Mancubi, the the Knights (and that spider boss (Mastermind?), but that's the only one I've encountered). It's generally my primary weapon.
The assault rifle...eh. Works great on zombies, imps, and spiders. Works well against other stuff, assuming you keep the spray focused at the head at moderate to close ranges.
The chaingun packs a nice punch, if you aim at the upper torso.
Grenades are great. See a HWG or Revenant spawn, toss a grenade at him and back around a corner.
Plasma gun mows stuff down wonderfully.
Rocket launcher...has found very little use for me. Used it on the Mancubi, and the occasional Revenant, but that's it.
BFG...well, what can you say? It beats everything down. I've used it to great effect against Arch-Viles and Hell Knights.
Chainsaw would be nicer if it didn't have the long switch-to animation. I've got it bound to mouse3 for an easy pull-out, but doesn't reward me with an instant spray of blood. Good for zombies and Cacodemons (since they like to close range). I prefer to stay out of melee as much as possible, though.
The only change I'd make is to narrow the shotgun's spread; it's virtually useless beyond 6 feet. You can take out an imp with one well-placed shotgun blast at point-blank range (Same goes for the whip guy; I typically use two to the torso), but it might take 5 shots at 15 feet. I think I'd increase the pistol's refire rate a bit, too.
Oh, and I'd have a freaking flashlight attached to everything but the rocket launcher.

What annoys me is that the leveldesign sux, hard!
Compare Doom3 to FarCry where you could take multiple roads actually see stuff and not rely on a cheesy spawn behind you to make a cheap scare.
Also it would be nice with some sort of storyline.
Now I just have to wait for HL2 I guess.

It's a bit linear. I wouldn't say it sucks hard though, I've seen a lot worse. Daikatana anyone? You're right though, had they been able to make the levels a bit more like Far Cry it would have been better. The level design in FarCry was excellent.Faram wrote:What annoys me is that the leveldesign sux, hard!

It actually runs fine at 800x600. I think I'll crank it up to 1024x768 and see how it pans out.

Fuck, it runs great. Doom 3 ain't a huge system hog after all. If you keep off luxuries like AA and run it on medium, that is. It still looks fantastic.
Fought my first Demon. God I hated them in Doom/Doom 2.

I just don't find any of it interesting, after a while that insipid attempt at an atmosphere through dark settings and flickering lights starts to work against the experience, the way the screen jumps and blurs when I'm hit is annoying and distracting, fighting the monsters is not fun, it's a chore with the boring and weak weapons combined with monsters that are too tough and it doesn't matter if you put several shots in their faces and the way the player screen reacts to damage etc.
Suffice to say it is not Doom as in Doom 1&2, I was expecting that + all the cool realistic physics we can do now.

Well, on the first, can't say anything.
On the 2nd point, if you would have read even a smidgen about Doom3, you would have known it was never intended to be the original Doom style, or rather any ID game style, it was supposed to be a 'horror themed story game'. That was incredibly annoying, but lets hope Id can make it up in their next game.

Stuff on my N-Force 2 northbridge, Asus A7N8X:
-Ati All In Wonder 9700 Pro (with TV tuner...I likes)
-Athlon XP 2600 FSB 333
-Crucial 2x 512mb DDR 333 CAS 2.0 (1gb total)
And then we have stuff like my ancient SB Live! X-Gamer on my Southbridge chipset... I hear that id software dumped almost all sound processing on the processor instead of the sound cards, can anyone confirm?
Anyway, I'm running at 1024x768x32, no antialiasing, no ansiotrophic, high details, all advanced details selected on (excluding antialiasing).
Least intensive scenes hold at 60fps. Average scene holds at 30-35 fps. The more intensive scenes pull down towards 20-25 fps, but they don't really stutter and hold smoothness very nicely, which means that even the biggest firefights, although ranging at 17-25fps, are still very much playable and enjoyable. Looks like the bandwidth of these graphics cards is being utilized quite efficiently. I like these settings, and the game is very playable at that.

Like someone else said, that wasn't their intention, this is basically you living out an Aliens type movie, its supposed to be an interactive movie. His Divine Shadow wrote:I just don't find any of it interesting, after a while that insipid attempt at an atmosphere through dark settings and flickering lights starts to work against the experience, the way the screen jumps and blurs when I'm hit is annoying and distracting, fighting the monsters is not fun, it's a chore with the boring and weak weapons combined with monsters that are too tough and it doesn't matter if you put several shots in their faces and the way the player screen reacts to damage etc.

About getting hit and being annoying, why don't you just play on god mode then, this is meant to be more realisitic, it makes it scary, not just planting your feet and mowing shit down. Just wait for some mods to come out I'm sure there will be some major fragfest type mods. I never really play FPS games for their intial single player, mods make multiplayer magic.
The physics engine and realism is going to make a Counter-strike type mod for Doom3 be amazing.

Alpha 3.9 drivers get 5-7% boost, not bad, but the nvidia drivers are good enough now.Shinova wrote:Grab the newest drivers for your video card. Someone over on another forum got multi double-digit FPS boosts by doing so.
EDIT: double digit should only happen with old drivers.
