We request to understand the nature of the alliance you propose. This nation always seeks friends but we wish to know how friendly it is you wish us to be. We are far from any potential war and we do not wish to involve our selves recklessly.
I assure you that we do not wish for war either. Precisely the opposite! We want to avoid war in our nation, and, to be honest, having you as our friend would go a long way towards keeping others out of our lands.
We wish to be as friendly with you as you wish to be with us. Trade partners, naturally, and hopefully a defensive pact. Your forces on the ground could benefit from our horses, and we would benefit from your strength on the sea, as well as the weight of your name.
This is no ploy to enter a war. Let the accursed Illianers deal with the Jihad if they wish! We in Tear simply want to strengthen ties with our friends in case the worst comes.
High Lord Aldrid
We can arrange a mutally satisfactory treaty with you. Right now we wish to obtain funds and your cavalry men have a high reputation. We would be willing to provide some of our ships to help patrol your waters in return for funds and men.
We will recognize your nation and if you so desire establish mutal enclaves for our ministers.
King Fingol Elrist.
We have reason to be wary. The wars between our nations were long ago, yet many still remember. And we hear whispering of an alliance against the Jihad in the South. We are uncomfortable with your goals so closely matching those of the hated Illianers. Yet in the spirit of peace and reconcilliation, we offer you this:Agent Fisher wrote:Though we have had disagreements in the past, I ask you now, that my men be allowed to pass through your territory.
Any men who are sworm members of your army may pass our borders, but no more than a regiment at a time. While in Tairen lands, your weapons will be set aside - any man who unsheathes his sword will be considered hostile - and your troops will be escorted by Tairen patrols, to show you the best roads and the quickest ways out of our country. Finally, a small tax must be paid for every ten men who cross into our lands. If you follow these guidelines, your army shall pass through our lands swiftly and unmolested, and in time even these restrictions may be lifted. Fail to follow these guidelines and our borders will be closed to you.
These restrictions do not apply to any who are not members of your nations military. Citizens and tradesmen may now come and go freely, doing away with the previous tolls imposed on those passing through. We offer this in the hope of peace and goodwill.

As for the movement restrictions, how large a tax?
And if you lift some of these restrictions such as the tax, we will offer a place of sanctuary to your civilains in case you ever are invaded.

The ideal would be a defensive alliance, but we are of course aware that your own obligations and your distance from the danger would make this a fairly remote possibility. We would duly compensate you, however, for whatever assistance you could render.Stormbringer wrote:Letter to the Council Chairman Barca:

An alliance would not be totally objectionable. We are aware that both our nations have interests that extend beyond our immediate borders. As such we are more than willing to discuss a possible treaty.

We glady welcome your party and will see to securing them a proper residence here in the capital. Our party will be dispatched along with a squadron of our ships to your nation.

The numbers on taxes are enclosed in this document [see ooc thread], and they will remain. Although your offer of refuge in the anticipation of the destruction of a nation you profess to seek peace with is... appreciated... we decline. The price is set at what it is, and you may choose to pass through our borders for that price or you may not. As to your relationship with Illian, it is difficult to tell at this point what your intentions are, and I trust you will forgive us if we err on the side of caution. Again, if you prove trustworthy, the provisions of this statue shall be reviewed.Agent Fisher wrote:The allaince you speak is one that we have heard about but not fully decided upon, and it is for defense only.

The letter from Confederation was received quickly and answered promptly. Although the Confederation was not known as a naval power, its armies were highly regarded and the Confederation wielded a great deal of influence. The Alidrial were well aware of their situation, and offers such as this were difficult to pass up. The Pillars convened, exchanging thoughts and ideas on the matter for a mere four hours before a decision was achieved.Pablo Sanchez wrote:Letters to the Council of the Alidrial, Cyprus, Republic of Karsinia, and Kingdom of Gondor
You are no doubt aware of the greatest recent change in the politics and future of the mediterranean region: the recent rise of the fanatic jihaddi. Their rhetoric of conquest is clear and damning evidence of their aggressive intent, and they threaten our common future as free nations trading on the inland ocean. We must either stand together or fall apart in the face of these people, against whom no argument but force of arms can be made.
Thus the City Councils of the Confederation of Andalus propose a defensive pact, valid only against the fanatic jihaddi. Let our armies work together in the common interest.

Letter to Council Chairman Karim Barca of the Confederation of Andalus
We of the Alidrial are well aware of the possible threat that the fanatical Jihhaddi represent to our interests and sovereignty as well as those of others. To that end, your offer of a defensive pact against the Jihaddi is accepted. It is our hope that the Jihaddi will not make our pact a necessity, but it is in our best interest to plan for such an eventuality.

The jihad have made an impressive number of enemies on the Mediterranean seaboard, and in the event of a war with them we do not doubt our victory, particularly if we were to gain your assistance. The provision of the treaty would simply be that we would each agree to defend the other in the event of an attack. As an attack upon your territory appears much less likely than upon ours, the Confederation would also be not averse to compensating you in other arenas. For example, the City Councils of Valencia and Cartaga could be persuaded to offer certain concessions to your merchants there.
Should a war actually begin, there would also be a number of possible additions determing the distribution of territorial gain. We can reasonably expect that our own armies and navies would shoulder the brunt of the effort and it would thus be only natural that we also gain the most from the conclusion of the war. The disposition of major port cities (Banghazi and Alexandria, most prominently) would of course be the prerogative of your Realm.
I eagerly await your reply.

The letter from the Imperial Council at Riva was delievered to the Pillars mere minutes after the letter to the Confederation of Andalus had been sent to its final destination. The island nation to their west was their closest neighbor, and shared in their own unique situation. The letter was read quickly, thoughts exchanged between Pillars until a decision was arrived.StormtrooperOfDeath wrote:To: Council of the Alidrial

Greetings. It has come to our attention that the jihad has become a concern to you. We would like to extend the hand of friendship in order to check the advance of the horde. If an understanding can be reached between out respective nations, it would be most fortuitous.

The Alidrial are well aware of the possible threat which the large forces of the Jihad can present to our sovereign rights and interests. We accept your offer of friendship and agree that in order to protect ourselves and our interests an understanding between our nations should be sought and found. If possible, we would like to send an envoy to your court in order to further discuss our situation.

Provided that it is understood that this deal applies only to the Jihad for the time being then this deal is acceptable.
The exact committment of forces would of course be suject to the demands at the time of course. However we do not wish to see out forces discounted.

The Alidrial accept your offer of arranging an exchange of ministers and for permanent enclaves in our respective cities to be erected. It is our hope that as time progresses and our peoples learn more about the other, our alliance will develop stronger and deeper ties.Stormbringer wrote:We would be happy to arrange an exchange of ministers and arrange for permanent enclaves in our respective cities.
Additionally, we would be more than happy to help you halt the spread of the Jihad in return for financial aide for our navy and an enclave
Your naval assistance against the Jihad should it prove necessary will be greatly appreciated. Our own navy while capable, is no match for the numbers which the Jihad appears to be capable of fielding. I am certain that we will manage to come to an agreement that will satisfy both sides in this matter.

Your letter is acknowledged and we are pleased at your positive reply. Should the jihad foolishly choose to attack any of their neighbors, they would find themselves most severely pressed from all directions.Marcao wrote:Letter to Council Chairman Karim Barca of the Confederation of Andalus

Our own metalworking technology is far inferior to yours, as you know the secret of cheap steel and construct vast automata. But supplies of ore would be made available at depressed prices in exchange for the assistance of your airships as scouts on the African continent.SirNitram wrote:However, we do wish to secure an agreement on the mission to prevent the Horde's advances. To this end, we propose a limited alliance. While we cannot provide enough troops to reinforce your border, we can watch troop movements and deliver information on the Horde's movements. We would also, of course, wish to discuss trade between our peoples once the immediate threat has past. Principality technology and Confederation metals can be put to good use staving off this Horde, if Lady Fate smiles upon us both.

Lords, Heroes, and Kings of the Great Nations of Anarchia and Bjorgheim;
Caliphon has always stood for stability, peace, and the common welfare of the nations of the great Baltic Sea. I find these requests to be dangerous for the stability of the region. I oppose completely any attempts to tun the Baltic into an armed military camp, in which our trading partners look in fear at the combined strength of the Sea's largest powers.
The Sea must be a place of peace. Balance, the Virtue of the Sea Mother, can not be broken.
Therefor, we offer non-agression pacts to both Anarchia and Bjorgheim. Raiding and bickering over minor matters of trade will not turn the region into a conflagration, and must stop.

I offer to the esteemed King of Bjorgheim a simple agreement. The trade of food from the Cantori Lowlands through the port of Draftsgard to your glorious city of Mundrhall has long been a point of contention, with heavy tariffs being placed on both sides.
It has come to my attention that your nation requires a steady source of grain and other foodstuffs, which our vast and fertile plains can provide. Therefor, we offer a reduction of tariffs on Bjorgheim iron by 75% in exchange for your own personage declaring a similar reduction on Caliphoni foodstuffs.
