Anything worth the cost of a missile, which can be located on the battlefield, will be shot at with missiles. If the US military is involved, then things, which are not worth the cost if a missile will also be shot at with missiles. -Sea Skimmer

I don't mind RTS games, but I don't like C&C style ones where it's a frantic build-fest and resource grab. I sometimes manage to do OK because of good tactics, but at the end of a Generals game, I've always built about half as many units as the next lowest guy and collected half as many resources. I like ones like Rome: Total War or Myth where you have a certain number of troops and resources to work with and that's all you get.

I like games with a lot of micromanagement and spreadsheets. I also like first person shooters. Depending on the mood I play one or the other (also depending on what is installed on my comptuer So I have no problem with Starcraft, Warcraft 3, C&C Generals, etc. I don't play these games very often anymore though.
About the only games I can't stand are sidescrolling jumping games, or racing/sports games. Complaining about building farms as blockades or knowledge of the tech tree as being important -- how ridiculous that's where the fun is in the research and planning . Compare that with having to press the A button at the right time to avoid being immersed in lava or using your turning brake at the right time to make the right turn, and tech trees, build positions and micromanagement are a sinch.
And to be honest, if you are seeing Warcraft 3 as spamming units you are not playing the game properly (Warcraft 3 is all about hero management). If you are seeing Starcraft as spamming units, you are wrong because Starcraft is all about unit matchups (if you see the enemy going vultures for example, you would never build many zealots). What people don't like about RTS are "cookie cutter" builds. There are certain orders to building your units and buildings that are the most optimal. People don't like that because it stifles their creativity and forces them to build a specific way all the time. I say too fucking bad, there is going to be an optimal way to build in any kind of RTS, and in games where optimal build orders don't matter, well that kind of game is boring as it doesn't reward the intelligent player. Obviously, after you've practised it a few times (or a few dozen), you will have cookie cutters memorized and the game comes down to micro. Scouting is also important, which is why those who sit in their base unaware of the enemy expanding usually die and complain about what they did wrong. Scouting lets you know what the enemy is building and when and where he will attack which lets you produce an appropriate counter. Aggressiveness is important, because if you attack you keep the enemy off balance and force them to respond to you. Map control and resource control are important. People who don't like these kinds of concepts shouldn't play any kind of RTS and stick to games which don't require constant attention and focus.
In general, defense should always be inferior to offense. Not only is defense intrisincally inferior because if you do not go offense you probably neglect intelligence (scouting) and you do not have map control and therefore do not control resources or know when the enemy will attack, but if defense was superior, well whoop de doo build 50 cannon/laser/archer/shit towers in your base, sit with unlimited resources and laugh as enemies try and storm your walls while chewing chips? Too bad, for me this kind of game would be boring, as defense is intrinsically boring.
