EVE looked like an awesome game to me when I was trying it...except that PvP can go blow my ass with such a vicious penalty system.

I play COH/COV and realy enjoye it a lot. COH was made with no PVP and was added on later on so its not a major focus in the game. Its easy to get into and most players are nice and helpfull towards noobs.
I'll second that.

COH/COV is pretty easy to solo throughout most of the game. It's also simple to find someone to team with when you want some co-op play time. It doesn't take up too much time. I usually only play late in the evenings and weekends and I have a good time with it.

And, once you make it passed the religious worship phase of play, you can go back every so often and work on finishing the main story. Plus, once that's done, you can go skill hunting, get armor, find a sword you like and mod that however you see it and buy runes for your armor. The items have a sliding scale of stats, so if you want a Fell Blade, there's a chance you can pick up one that's level appropriate early on and find another, stronger one later on. Stuff like that. Plus it's free and you can run quests with the bots if you get into the 'GLF Tu Monkes!!!11!11' bullshit that puts anything other then monks on the sidelines from a party. Sucks.
Yeah, not only does every party need 1 or 2 monks, but there's a serious shortage of monks as well - in almost any town you'll find fewer monks than any other class. Hence why I made a Monk after not getting too far with my Warrior - man it's easy getting groups as my monk. :D

It's not really that bad, as long as you obey the basic rule of "only fly what you can afford to lose". There are plenty of cheap but effective setups, and buying full insurance drops the price even more. Once you get a decent income going, cruiser losses don't even count anymore.

Most of the time when someone's complaining about the penalty, it's because they ignored that basic rule. Taking their only battleship into pvp after they invested everything they own buying top-end faction mods, for example. But that's the fault of careless players, not the game itself.

The upcoming Nightfall expansion's "Hero" henchmen should remedy that somewhat. If you can't find a healer, then find someone who has a character that picked up a monk Hero. They're configurable and controllable, so they should be better than the healer henchmen at least.
Later...

This is doubly true when a T1 frigate with a decent setup (punishers or rifters are easy) can kill cruisers/battlecruisers without much problem. N00b piracy is very, very profitable, and there's little monetary risk when you're flying 700K and ransoming cruisers for millions. :)

But seriously, what kind of system do people expect in a game about starships? You get it back after it's blown up?
