Bet you its the bug where if you destroy the cannons but leave the artillery men alive they'll occasionally not rout and you'll end up with 16 odd cannons firing at you from them...

That sounds hilarious.

I'm still pissed at the naval balance. I love that my frigates are deadly, but they should not be a threat to a fleet of 3rd rates AT ALL. This chainshot thing is ridiculous. By all means, blow holes in the sails, but demasting happens far too easily.

They already fixed chain shot in 1.5, which has been out for awhile now. It's fairly tough to demast big ships now.

Admittedly the only naval battle I tried with 1.5 involved me gangbanging a galleon with 4 frigates, where I bracketed the galleon with a pair of frigates on each side and they demasted with their combined 1st volleys. I'll try and a battle with some SotL's and see how it goes...

Granted, in 1.3 the galleon would probably have managed to sink a frigate or two so...

My naval battles generally go: Everyone uses chain shot, shoot all their masts off, capture all ships.

It is not hard to dismast all ships. I picked up a couple of Spanish 2nd rates in the last couple of turns without much trouble.

It seems you're able to damage the masts more while the sails are up, seems rather than just ripping the sails the chain shot actually just takes hp of the rigging or something the whole time...

I've seen Russia invade the Barbary states though, so the naval invasions are working in a way. Not seen any actual logical invasions though.

It would probably be better if the chain shot effects were more obviously range dependent so that while at long range it at best rips sails and perhaps takes down the rigging of smaller ships, but you need to get in close to actually demast a SotL, giving the SotL a fighting chance and doing the same to you or at least giving you a good dose of roundshot.

It's facepalm worthy the first time you see it. One battle of mine started as a huge artillery war between our guns before our infantry really went anywhere. I destroyed one set of his guns and sent the cavalry in for the other set. Imagine my surprise when sixteen cannonballs shoot out from his line of artillery men killing like 15 of my cavalry. :wtf:

Has anyone else noticed that light infantry are appearing far earlier than they used to? I started a Dutch campaign and within 10 turns I was seeing French light infantry regiments popping up around the place.

While we're on the subject of artillery, it would be nice if there was some way to show Line of Fire effects of terrain on the range cone, since it's not always entirely clear if a particular terrain feature will really block the cannon fire or not, especially on the more subtly rolling maps.

I don't think the tech tree is any different, is the AI cheating? In any case, Light infantry is awesome, together with light dragoons, I can break the stupid AI line long before it ever gets close enough to engage my main line :D
