Whelp, here's the results from a Posideon IV attempting an orbital insertion burn, didn't go as well as I'd hoped, I smashed into the ocean on the night side and exploded.

This odyssey, this, exodus. Do we journey toward the promised land, or into the valley of the kings? Three decades ago I envisioned a new future for our species, and now that we are on the brink of realizing my dream, I feel only solitude, and regret. Has my entire life's work been a fool's crusade? Have I led my people into this desert, only to die?

Well I managed 1,000 kilometers from the planet in ~8:20 with a final velocity of 5.27km/s. This was done with a 4 stage design consisting of a first stage of 12 SRB's, a second stage of 9 LRB's with three fuel tanks each at full burn, a third stage of 3 SRB's, and a final burn of a single LRB with three fuel tanks at 90% burn for most of the trip. I think that if I wasn't going for an exit velocity record I might be able to trim a stage by never burning the 3rd stage and just keeping it as a mounting point for the lower stages.

Fired stages 3 and 4 as one this last attempt, no where near as fast due to the dead weight once the SRB's died but I still breached the 1,000km mark at around the ten minute mark.

Image

I doubt anybody can do it with 2 stages, but I'll try myself anyway.

2 stages can be done. I trimmed most of the boosters from stage one, and left only three of them to fire with the 9 LRB's that now make up stage 1. I used my combined final stage from the last post to do the rest. It was the longest trip yet at over 15 minutes.

Image

Really doubt a single stage will be possible, going to try anyway.

1) Least stages for extra orbital (they're never coming home).

2 stages, Norade

2) Highest speed for extra orbital

5174.5m/s, Norade

3) Most orbits before degredation

4) Highest stable orbit

5) Highest total distance travelled

6) Shortest time to orbit (need screen caps)

7) Shortest time to extra orbital (above 999km's) (need screens)

8 minutes 21 seconds, Norade

Barnest, what is orbit defined as? 160km, the lower bound for LEO?

EDIT: Also, how do you take screenshots in fullscreen mode? Whenever I try I get a screen of my desktop and anything else that is up behind KSP.

I suppose an orbit would be around 60-160km's. However, the shortest time to orbit is the shortest time to get your ship into a stable orbital pattern. This is an odd one, but what it means is I need to see that your time at orbital height, and then proof that you have orbited with that same rocket.

There's a bug where if you land on certain parts of the planet the game thinks you've gone through the planet's surface and you blow up.

Does anybody know if deploying the chute increases drag while still in space?

Anal Bead I made the record:

6 minutes to 1000km, 8785.6 top speed in just 2 stages...

Capsule
Coupler
SAS
Fat tank
Single engine
coupler
Fat tank
4x-800 Cluster Engine

It makes it orbital with a single stage, just leave out the small engine...

Hmmm. I don't know if I should allow non-original parts for the challenges...

But either way, can you do it again with screen-shots?

Perhaps we should have a list for vanilla parts and mod parts?

Oh and LaCroix, in my experience deploying the chute has no immediately noticeable drag effects past 100km.

Introducing the Odin Mark I:

Image

A very simple rocket. A chute'-capsule-decoupler-SAS-3 sphere fuel tanks and a triple rocket booster part.

It can reach 1000k in around 4:48 minutes:

Also guys, to stop fucking around with paint (no one wants that). Make a folder in KSB's directory called "Screenshots" and just press F1 in game.

Finally, a touching picture I found on SA reflecting the plight of our brave astronauts:

Nice work, those rounded fuel modules work wonders It seems, as is the triple in one booster module. Oh and LaCroix, I have no idea how that new rocket didn't beat my 1000k speed record. Does it just take a while to get going?

Oh and to note, the Red Dwarf theme is oddly appropriate with this game.

That Fatboy tank used unaltered is a bit shady; it's actually the same weight as the standard tank but with five times as much fuel.

Well I found out why I had so many issues with Liquid Rockets.
Turns out I never figured out how to use "Throttle" So I was always lunching rockets at 50% of thrust. Which really means my rockets are massivly OVER designed in terms of thrust generation. Just got double my old height record by cranking throttle up.

Hopefully can spare anyone else from similar embaressment :P

I finally achieved a full orbit! No calculations, no maths, nothing but guesswork and hope. And a new rocket series.

The new Ragnarocket series combines the large engines of the Suicidal Insanity with hopefully a little more stability and a lot more hugeness.

They boast at least a 10% reliability rating. Indeed, I was suprised to see that it didn't explode on takeoff this time.
