Erm... Find a mage pure of heart and with Improved Initiative?
It's Rogue, not Rouge!

Depends on the party and the situation. In one campaign the characters had a mage ally (or it might be more accurate to say patron) who could smack down a demon lord. Of course, I can't imagine them going for a deal like that.

+4 vs. +12. Add to that the fact that the Fiend could easily set it up as a surprise attack, or even as a magical trap.

Once that's done, well, anything can happen. I would imagine that a fiend expecting a powerful mage would have some sort of restraints with anti-magical power imbued in them to keep the mage from getting too uppity.

Only hope at that point is that an army of Celestials raids hell to try and save the mage from being used for the device.

Says who? You? I don't see anything anywhere specifying that someone cannot be a mage AND be pure of heart, have you? Or are you simply pulling this out of thin air? If you want to argue that it can't be found, fine, the Cleric's soul is forfeit anyway since you can't do what you promised.

Why is there a paradox?

You realize this depends entirely on the type of fiend, correct? Is it a pit fiend? Glabrezu? Kyton? Erinyes?

I once sicked a Demon Lord's hatchetman armed with the world's most infamous artifact weapon on the characters. TBF, they did have the world's most badass paladin with them and they were able to summon a planetar (although the planetar died in the first round).

Did you notice that the Fiend in question is named? This is not some home-brewed creation, this is Mydianchlarus, Lord of the Gray Wastes of Hades. Lesser Devils do NOT become Lords of entire realms.

If this were a Tanaari, and not a Baatezu, then outwitting the lord becomes much easier, but Baatezu are by design clever sons of bitches who cover every angle they can. The only reason the Blood War has lasted this long with the Tanaari's massive numerical superiority has been proper tactics and planning of the cunning and well-disciplined Baatezu.

Suffice to say, outside his own plane, you're looking at CR 20, bare minimum, if you should choose to fight.

For the record, the Gray Wastes of Hades are the home realm of yugoloths, and Mydianchlarus rules over them, they keep his tower safe. Still itching for a fight? Still think one mortal mage could take this on?

Yes, but it is much easier to find the information some other way. Which is what sane people do. Some people, on the other hand, have to learn the hard way. :D

mind you I also have a reputation as the GM's helper in roleplaying. creating characters that tend to do interesting things to plot.

observe my born in Ravenloft Sorceress...
1. Choatic Neutral with good tendancies, Daughter of a very infamous witch/domain lord in the isles of Terror, who is prusued and caught in the sort of romantic geometric shape that can't be seen outside of anime.

2. creating a bountyhunter in a waterdeep campaign who was the dependable, party's pet token "total bastard" (being part drow, he was a bastard in every sense), but could be counted on to uphold his sense of honour like a religion. (yes, very lawful evil), and the Moonelf mage/fighter in the party had great anti-chemestry with him. <think blackmage/assassin vs. Whitemage>
