They came from the same school, thus, it's reasonable for them to have the same moves. It also allows for you to see how they grow as a character. As the later SF games came out you get to see them evolve into their own perferred styles. In Alpha 3 Ken and Ryu are hardly the same characters, for example.Vympel wrote:

In SF, you have Ken and Ryu. Who have identical moves and are mirror images of each other. Somehow, this is acceptable to people. Say it with me: LAME.

You also have a Sumo wrestler who can shoot himself through the air like a missile as well as land several punches in the blink of an eye, an Air Force major who can create minature sonic booms with his arms, a mystical yogi who can breate fire and stretch his limbs to several times their normal length, a wild human cannonball from the depths of the Brazillian rainforest who can channel electricity through his skin, a scarred former Muay Thai master out for revenge, a sadistic, claw-wielding matador/ninja, and a ruthless criminal mastermind with psyhic powers bent on world domination...Vympel wrote:In SF, you have Ken and Ryu. Not to mention, they're DRAWN and animated with care, not crappy-ass sprites made from jerky video 'cuz the gamemakers were lazy bastards.felineki wrote:You also have a Sumo wrestler who can shoot himself through the air like a missile as well as land several punches in the blink of an eye, an Air Force major who can create minature sonic booms with his arms, a mystical yogi who can breate fire and stretch his limbs to several times their normal length, a wild human cannonball from the depths of the Brazillian rainforest who can channel electricity through his skin, a scarred former Muay Thai master out for revenge, a sadistic, claw-wielding matador/ninja, and a ruthless criminal mastermind with psyhic powers bent on world domination...Vympel wrote:In SF, you have Ken and Ryu. Strip all the special moves out of SF, and you still have a game where each character is unique enough to demand a different strategy. Chun Li plays NOTHING like Zangief, even if all you use are basic punches and kicks.
Strip all the special moves out of MK, and you're stuck with a dozen iterations of the exact same character, each skinned with a different poorly-digitized image of an actor in a shitty costume.

If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! All votes for me! Wheeee!" -- Lagmonster
Better imagination?Vympel wrote:Bah. I don't like cartoony, Japanese-themed crap. I much prefer MK in all departments. It's characters alone kick the shit out of any SF character in terms of imagination...
From the game with more Pallette swaps than Final Fantasy?

Ryu: Dedicated martial artist who lives for his craft. Travels the world seeking for new challenges, mostly unaware that he's being persued by a young girl with rediculous raw talent seeking his teaching skills, and a meglomaniac seeking his power. Come face-to-face with the true dark side of his art, and the very real possibility that he can fall to it. Eventually masters the art to the point that he can push himself to his limits without losing his humanity, just in time to be schooled by an ancient master to show him that he still has much to learn.Vympel wrote:You're simply picking out characters from different MK games at random. In MK you've got...hm...ninja, undead ninja, dragon ninja, robot, scantily-clad female ninjas, Bruce Lee ripoff, and a black dude.

Ken. Not quite as dedicated, as he has found something to fight for. Preferrs to spend his days with his girlfriend/wife, but it willing to put almost everything down to help out a friend, even facing down said powerful megalomaniac with said schoolgirl as his only backup.

That's part of why a lot of people think Dan sucks: they assume they're supposed to play him like Ryu/Ken/Akuma/Sakura* because a few of his moves are similar to ones they all share, when his balance is actually completely different...LordShaithis wrote:Strip all the special moves out of SF, and you still have a game where each character is unique enough to demand a different strategy. *And even those characters are slightly different from each other.

Well, for one thing, Mortal Kombat nowadays looks like this, with two unique real-world fighting styles per character and weapon fighting, while Street Fighter, well... still looks just like it did in that flash video, complete with strong/quick punk/kick buttons (which honestly are pretty much still strong & quick punches or kicks no matter which character).
EDIT: fixed grammar and spelling. Gold star for me.

Alright, I misunderstood your intentions with that statement.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Because both series went on beyond just those two games, yet some of you guys are just citing Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II alone.Kamakazie Sith wrote:Ummm so?Spanky The Dolphin wrote:And for both you guys are discussing characters from game incarnations that are about twelve years old...

It's an eternal debate, dude; it's been going on since they were first new in arcades, and it'll continue as long as people still play old-school games on emulators and systems they got from garage sales.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Because both series went on beyond just those two games, yet some of you guys are just citing Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II alone.Kamakazie Sith wrote:Ummm so?Spanky The Dolphin wrote:And for both you guys are discussing characters from game incarnations that are about twelve years old...
