The loss of artificial gravity roughly coincided, whether by accident or intentionally, with the breaching of the Enginarium's walls. The effect was rather inconvenient for the Imperial forces; one naval trooper twitched in surprise as the gravity went down, and launched himself towards the roof; the rest of the defenders, though had been smart enough to stay still, found their cover drifting away and themselves lsoing some of their aim.

Nevertheless, when the Chaos Marines burst through the half-dozen breaches in the walls, they found themselves greeted by a withering hail of fire. Two Marines were vapourised outright by melta fire, another was cut down by a hail of plasma bolts, and a fourth was cooked inside his armour by massed hellgun fire.

The five Marines still standing let fly with a hail boltgun rounds at the Imperial defender. Six naval armsmen and five Stormtroopers were shredded, and the survivors flew through the air as leapt out of the firing lines. In an instant, the battle had gone from a disciplined chokepoint defence to a tangled mass of bodies and gunfire flying everywhere. On the plus side, it did make aiming much easier; dodging became virtually impossible, when you needed something to push against. The Imperial forces took full advantage, the Chaos Marine who had been wounded earlier died having taken over thirty separate hellgun shots in less than two seconds. Adivan used his melta to vapourise a second from the chest up, and sprayed Kraken rounds at a third while activating his energy blade.

Mortragor went directly to the thickest part of the battlefield, drifting with Daemon Blade in one hand, propelled by Sorcerous energies. He faced off against Adivan, swiping down with his gigantic, hissing sword.

Running in zero gravity was a ridiculously slow process, something that Prius had little time to reflect on as he clunked away from his suddenly drifting cover. The plasma pistol's light went green, indicating fresh charge... he glanced out and aimed at a chaos marine, who quickly started to bring his bolter into line... Prius' hasty shot hit the heretic's arm, knocking the return shot offline by fractions of an inch, the bolt shell whizzing past him silently in the vacuum.

Jolan flashed down the corridor, accompanied by Severa's hunter-skull. One did not need auspex's to know there was fighting ahead. The thunder of bolters and the screams of the dying conveyed it well enough. If the Traitor Legionaires seized the command deck it would be a disaser. He flicked his wrist, watching the hunter-skull's read out on the electoo. He wrapped himself in a corona of force and flew into the adjoining corridor, just centimeters above the deck.

The Legionaire on rear guard was too slow. Gix poured power through his force rod and the Traitor exploded in ball of green witchfire, scattering body parts and armour fragments throughout the corridor as the inquisitor ducked back into cover.

Suddenly the chaos marines attacking the enginarium and the fabricarium fall back, covering their retreats with withering fire and grenades... however, the force attacking the command center redoubles their efforts...

The Chaos Marine squad entered with a bang, blasting back the molten door, and charging at breakneck speed through. Arbites and Guardsmen opened up, unleashing a pure inferno of concentrated fire on the doorway. The Marines held off against the hellish onslaught , unleashing a hail of bolter fire at the Guardsmen and Arbites on the ground floor. One of the Guardsmen was foolish enough to rush forward and attempt to stab a Marine with his warknife. His efforts ceased when the Marine slammed a steel-fist through his midsection.

A Chaos Marine was turned into a mass of molten flesh and armor by a concentrated hellgun volley. Grenades flew up at the walkways, turning several of the defenders into smears of blood. Another Marine fell when a point-blank stubber blast turned his chest into a gaping hole. Another concentrated volley of hellgun bolts brought two more down.

Xerxes spotted a lone Marine off to his right, clawing his way with frightening speed up the wall to the walkway. "Shift fire, right!" he yelled into his vox. Hellgun bolts and stubber rounds hissed pass his ear, reflecting off his armor. The Chaos Marine brutally gunned down more Guardsmen and Arbites, and charged forward, killing anything in his path.
Xerxes yanked his power sword from it's sheath, powering it on. A particulary accurate shot vaporized one of the behemoth's shoulder plates, and suddenly, the vile creature was upon him. Xerxes had never seen a man move so fast before in his life. Xerxes himself was extremely well trained in melee combat, but his skill was nothing compared to this. The brute pulled out a chainsword, and swept it at Xerxes viciously. Xerxes managed to deflect it narrowly with his powersword, but then it came screaming back at him from above. He tumbled to the right, flicking his blade across the Chaos Marine's knee, severing it. The beast didn't even notice. They danced across the walkway, swords crackling and screaming. Then, an opening! Xerxes swung his sword with all his might, driving the crackling blade deep into the Marine's chest. He screamed, and then fell limp. Xerxes almost buckled, his body exhausted. "Sir! Take that fething beast down!" a voice yelled at him from his vox.

A Chaos Marine slogged through fire to set up a heavy bolter, and sprayed it across the upper walkways, bringing a half-dozen defenders down.
Through the smoke, Xerxes sighted the bolter operator, and squeezed his hellgun's trigger, sending a half-dozen bolts screaming in. The bolter operator fell in half, his torso vaporized. He swept his gun back and forth on full auto until it ran dry, then slammed another power cell home. No more shots came from the doorway, and he could see no more Chaos Marines standing. "Looks like we've repelled the greeting party, for the moment." he said heavily into his vox. "Casualties?" he inquired. Patrol-Officer Duran answered. "Looks like 9 Guardsmen down, sir. 6 of our own." Xerxes nodded subconciously. "We can't hold here much longer. There will be many more Chaos soldiers on the way. Demo?" "Ready, sir"
came back the sharp reply. "Pop a proximity fuse on the bomb. We're getting out of here."

The Guardsmen and Arbites finished sealing up the rear entrance when they heard the melta bomb go off. Xerxes couldn't help but mutter a prayer of thanks. "They aren't coming through there for a little while. Lets hoof it down to the enginarium, soldiers!"

Lillith watched a chaos space marine as it advanced .She knew she would get in trouble but the marinbes attention was on the center she acted.

The marine faced what must be a warp spawned nightmare. She was easliy as fast as himself but It screamed as her spear pirced its weapon arm .It threw a punch with its other arm it gabed her and started to squeeze her shoulder. She swung the sprar up anjd sliced the things helment open. The marine screamed as its ear drums exploded and its eyes froze solid.

Mercifully she brought the spear down through its neck killing it.

Cradling her arm she went off hunting more enemies.

As Mortragor's massive power sword came down, Adivan desperately swung his energy blade to intercept it. The impact jarred him to the bone, and Conservation of Momentum would have sent him spinning backwards had he not applied TK to stop it. Tossing his combiweapon back over his shoulder, he launched himself back away from the massive Terminator-armoured figure. If he could strike something vital with his blade, he might have a chance; if he could actually hit the thing with a melta blast, that might also hurt it, but he was dubious about his chances of getting past whatever sorcerous defences it might have. Catching himself on a control console, he floated warily some distance from the Chaos Lord, waiting. Some part of his mind dimly noted the withdrawal of the remaining Chaos Marines, but most of him was focussed on Mortragor and what he would do next.

Mortragor gestured contemptously at the inquisitor. This one had spirit, but was too weak to stand against him. He wanted stronger prey. A shower of black lightning bolts errupted from his gauntlet as he unleashed Chaos sorcery against Adivan.

Prius sensed the marines retreating and edged out from around the cover, determined to harry them as they went. Suddenly a shot lashed out, grazing his suit, a thin plume of escaping atmosphere frosting out into the vaccuum from his shoulder segment...

As the lightning arced across the vacuum towards him, Adivan dived off to the right... or, rather, tried to. He had trained for zero-gee fighting, of course, but all of his reflexes were geared towards fighting in gravity, and what should have been a graceful dive was more of a lurch. Still, the majority of the bolts missed him. One, however, struck him a glancing blow along his flank, and he sucked in a scream as the vile sorcery shattered ceramite and burned flesh. Though painkillers quickly deadened the agony of the wound, he knew it was serious, and would need medical attention. If I survive, anyway. Emperor save us all...

As Adivan stopped himself against a chair, wincing from the after-effects of the Warp-spawned lightning bolt, he noted that the surviving Stormtroopers -maybe twenty in all - had been forming up and aiming at the monstrosity's back since the last Marines had withdrawn. Now, as the Chaos Lord prepared to unleash some other sorcery against him, he was struck from behind by a hail of precisely aimed shots, from hellguns, meltas, and plasma guns. Adivan felt Mortragor's psychic snarl of rage as he spent, the shots playing over his armour or deflecting off his daemonic blade, and he knew this was his only chance, if indeed he had one. With all his strength, he launched himself blade-first at the Chaos Lord, covering the distance before his foe could do more than turn slightly. As he flew, he scrabbled with TK for something he could harm; blood vessels to block, power couplings to break, servos to jam, anything...

Pater quickly applied a sealant to Prius' suit, the material hardening in the vacuum and cutting off the leak.

"They're retreating," Prius said wonderingly. "Marines don't retreat."

"Ours don't. Theirs have no such injunctions," Pater informed him. He jerked his helmeted head toward the hallway the chaos marines had evacuated. "Ready to hunt?"

"Ready."

Whether the inquisitor was stunned or dead, Mortragor didn't much care. The Black Legion chaplins would see to him if he survived. Those stormtroopers who dared shoot him in the back were another matter. With a flurrish he deflected several shots with his Daemon Sword as he raised his other hand. Blue warp fire burst among the stormtroopers, searing flesh and blackening bone. That was more like. A melta struck him full on, only partially deflected by his wards. His life control systems struggled to deal with the temperature spike as he crushed the life out of a trooper with his free hand. Insects.

He felt his runes bleed power as the inquisitor tried to burn through them to attack his armour. He reinforced his wards and turned back towards the inquisitor. Time to finish him.

The surviving marines linked up, quickly preparing for another hard push. As Pater and Prius carefully scouted in their wake, Prius suddenly grabbed the inquisitor's shoulder.

"No. They're out there. Close."

They were in one of the hydroponics sections, the plants frozen and shattered in the wake of the depressurization. The pair took up concealed positions as Pater got on the vox.

"This is Novum. We need troops at at the hydroponics section, as many as can be gathered."

This isn't working... must try something else. As the Black Legion Lord turned to face him and his blade merely slid over the outside of the Terminator armour without touching it, Adivan knew that he was, in all probability, about to die. He vowed, silently, that if he did, he would kill this thing in the process... and he used TK to jerk his last pair of Meltabombs from where they hung on his backpack into the Chaos Lord's face. Hurling himself back and awkwardly blocking a blow from the enemy's Daemon Sword, which nevertheless slashed down along the side of his leg and melted a long line down the armour without touching flesh, he triggered the bombs. Almost simaltaneously, the last surviving melta-gunner, missing one arm and gasping in agony, planted a virtually point-blank shot into the Chaos Lord's back.

Mortragor noted the temperature spike as the melta gun struck him in the back. He really needed to finish of those annoying stormtroopers before they cooked him to-. His inhuman reflexes kicked in as the melta bombs rushed towards him. He deflected one to the side and the other-

Exploded in a blast of heat, overloading his wards and searing off an outer layer of his armour. And reducing the deck under him to slag. His enviromental sensors were all red lining. One solution. The Traitor Sorceror drew on his power and plummeted to the next level, falling fifteen meters into the cavernous chamber below. The floor rushed towards him and he didn't deaccelerate fast enough.

The deck crumpled on impact. A human being would have been stunned or killed by the impact. The Traitor Legionaire had ceased to be a human being long before he betrayed his Emperor and embraced the dark power of Chaos. The sorcerer pulled himself up right. The engineers weren't swarming him because he was literaly glowing red hot. At least he wasn't taking constant fire from all sides and there was an easy solution to the heat problem.

He charged an engineer and ran him through, punching Varn'iar all the way through the screaming mortal. Mortragar grabbed the corpse and lifted the corpse above his head and bathed in steaming blood, pulling it from the dying mans body with the power of the warp. Smoke rose where the blood boiled off his armour. The corpse began to burn.

"Nobody's coming," Prius noted after a moment.

"Apparently not," Pater responded. "How many do you think there are?"

Prius reached out with his senses. "Seven."

"Too many."

"One is too many."

Adivan watched the Chaos Lord vanish through the hole in the floor with disbelief. It was still alive! Well, hopefully not for long... The valiant trooper who had fired the last melta-shot had been fried by the blast of of heat, but his weapon was still serviceable - just. A brief application of TK moved it over the hole through which the Chaos Lord had fallen, and Adivan closed his eyes briefly. A cursory scan revealed Mortragor's position - standing in the room below, bathing in blood - and a thought shifted the meltagun into position, and pulled the trigger.

It spat a blast of energy hotter than a star down at the Traitor Marine fifteen metres below, and exploded. An instant later, Adivan combiweapon repeated the maneuvre (though without exploding), and added a burst of Kraken rounds for good measure. Flying on across the gap, it was caught by one of the surviving Stormtroopers, and tossed back to Adivan, who caught it gratefully and reached out to see what had become of the monstrosity below.

"They're coming back," Prius said, checking his plasma pistol, then drawing his energy sword.

"Every day is a good day to die for the Emperor," Pater intoned solemnly, readying his weapon.

"It's an honor to die at your side, Inquisitor," Prius replied. Pater remained silent.

Mortragar floated behind some heavy machinery and shed the remnants of her Terminator suit. Here he was obscured from the view of his enemies above. The ancient armour predated the Heresy, but the melta blasts had seared off enough armour for the bolter shells to shred its systems. A techmarine might be able to restore it, but at the moment it was dead weight. The huge marine gripped Varn'iar with one hand. Time to make those inquisitors pay.

The traitor was even more aweful outside of his armour. His head was crowened with a ring of horns. His eight foot tall body, huge even by marine standards, was covered in green scales. Scarlet and violet runes covered much of his powerful frame, marking dark pacts and unspeakable sorceries. He was more daemon than man and he would complete his ascention.

Pater, the resident mechanical expert, shrugged. "Overload the warp generator or the fusion plants."

Prius looked up. "Here they come."

Pater turned, and as the first chaos marine entered, the hydroponics lab exploded in a blizzard of swirling debris. Shots rang out as the marines tried to suppress the source of the telekinetic whirlwind.

Adivan and the remnants of the Stormtroopers simply stood there for several seconds after the second melta-blast was fired, adrenaline submitting briefly to fatigue. Eventually, one asked the inevitable question.

"Did we get him?"

Wearily, Adivan felt for the answer, and his heart sank.

"No. That... thing... is still out there somewhere. I can feel it."

Closing his eyes again, he concentrated as hard as he could and scanned the future and present, trying to see his enemy's precise location.
